About the Author

Martin Sundel is the director of Clinical Services for Sun Family Care, a companythat provides care management and counseling to older adults. He was the DulakProfessor of Social Work at the University of Texas at Arlington and also served onthe faculties of the University of Michigan, the University of Louisville, and FloridaInternational University. He holds a PhD in social work and psychology from theUniversity of Michigan and was a postdoctoral fellow at the Laboratory ofCommunity Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. He is a Charter Clinical Fellowof the Behavior Therapy and Research Society and has been recognized as a pioneerin introducing behavior therapy in Latin America. He has published extensively onthe application of behavioral science knowledge to the helping professions. An avidtable tennis player, he has won three national championships and silver and bronzemedals in international tournaments.

Sandra S. Sundel is the president and CEO of Sun Family Care. She was formerly onthe social work faculty at Florida Atlantic University. She was executive director offamily service agencies in Florida and Texas, and also served as executive director ofgroup homes for adults with developmental disabilities in Texas. She holds anMSSW from the University of Louisville and a PhD in clinical social work from theUniversity of Texas at Arlington. She has taught courses in social work practice,behavior therapy, interpersonal communication, and group work, and has conductednumerous workshops and seminars. She has consulted with corporations,government agencies, and nonprofit organizations on organizational behaviormanagement and interpersonal communication in the workplace. As mental healthconsultants to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) inCyprus, Sandra and Martin designed and implemented a psychosocial rehabilitationproject to foster collaborative relationships between Greek and Turkish Cypriots.

Dr. Franklin is a pediatric cardiologist who coordinates all CME and recertification review activities for Children's, as such he is expert in the content of the recertification exam and its structure. Dr. Tanz directs the consult service at Children's and thus has a wide breadth of clinical knowledge. All three are widely published in the journal literature but this will be their first book.

Great Book for Home School Science or Biology Studies

As a home school parent I am always looking for good educational books/resources. This book is a great tool for young and older students alike. The book gives a good description of mantids (who knew there are over 2400 species of them!), their care, costs and tips, all of which is easy to read and understand, especially those learning about mantids for the first time. I would highly recommend this book for home school students!

It successfully challenges the superiority of reason--a concept borne out of the belief that in Plato's culture/nature dualism one side must dominate--first by examining the origins of this bias, then observing alternative epistemological and ontological approaches, and finally applying these to the practical endeavors of scholarship. The contributors refute our philosophical upbringing through engaging essays considering a range of contexts, from visual arts by women artists to a feminist reading of science. The editors' choice of writers with diverse approaches--socialist, lesbian, and non-Western scholars are represented--adds credence to their unifying theory. A fascinating, landmark collection. In Blood at the Root , Ferguson (Univ. of Massachusetts) presents a socialist-feminist view of social domination that revises existing theories by fortifying them with a broader historical base. The author's approach rests on "sex/affective production," wherein historical factors have caused domination by forming our sexual and romantic desires, habits, and expectations. Ferguson's discourse is well argued and formidable in its scope; and, as outlined in the final chapters, her reconstructive theory supports a pluralist vision of women's identity liberation. About the Author
Thomas G. Cummings, professor, chair of the Department of Management and Organization, and executive director of the Leadership Institute, received his B.S. and MBA from Cornell University, and his Ph.D. in socio-technical systems from the University of California at Los Angeles. He was previously on the faculty at Case-Western Reserve University. He has authored 13 books, written over 40 scholarly articles, and given numerous invited papers at national and international conferences. He is associate editor of the JOURNAL OF ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR, and former editor-in-chief of the JOURNAL OF MANAGEMENT INQUIRY, chairman of the Organizational Development and Change division of the Academy of Management, and president of the Western Academy of Management. His major research and consulting interests include designing high-performing organizations and strategic change management. He has conducted several large-scale organization design and change projects, and has consulted to a variety of private and public-sector organizations in the United States, Europe, Mexico, and Scandinavia.

Christopher G. Worley is a Senior Research Scientist at the Center for Effective Organizations (USC's Marshall School of Business) and professor of management in Pepperdine University's Master of Science in Organization (MSOD) program. He received B.S. from Westminster College, master's degrees from Colorado State University and Pepperdine University, and his doctorate from the University of Southern California. He served as Chair of the Organization Development and Change Division of the Academy of Management, received the Luckman Teaching Fellowship at Pepperdine University, and the Douglas McGregor Award for best paper in the Journal of Applied Behavioral Science. His most recent books are Management Reset and Built to Change, and he is completing a book on organization agility. His articles on agility and strategic organization design have appeared in the JOURNAL OF APPLIED BEHAVIORAL SCIENCE, JOURNAL OF ORGANIZATION BEHAVIOR, SLOAN MANAGEMENT REVIEW, STRATEGY+BUSINESS, and ORGANIZATIONAL DYNAMICS. One would think that a book about change would be innovative in terms of style. This book is as exciting as the operating instructions that come with your vcr. However, the content is first class. This book will remain on my desk as a reference. Almost every chapter has vital information for any type of change agent. It tells you the key steps in managing change, overcoming resistance to change and designing change interventions. It walks you through the change process step by step beginning with entering an organization then to diagnosing a problem. Once you diagnose a problem the book clearly describes a myriad of interventions for organziational, group and individual problems. Then the book takes you through the steps of implementing and evaluating interventions.

Too general, lots of filler, still better than average

This textbook is dated, as all multi-editions (intentionally?) are. Most of the case studies are from the 1990s; there is little sense of history here. The case studies tend to be short and general in nature, as well. The material on OD presented in the book is good and informative, even if the prose style is rather dry. What the authors spend 676 pages(including glossary)to say could have been said as well in perhaps half the space. Compared to other OD texts that the writer has read, this one comes off quite well, the forgoing nonwithstanding. In terms of constructive criticism, this writer would like to see greater depth in the coverage of each topic, and a greater sense both of history and of the future. The book reads as if the authors expect the trends of the present to continue without change into the forseeable future. Specifically, globalization is seen as a long-term factor, when it may well give way to regional trade blocks, as the world becomes multipolar, and as ethnic and religous issues join national self-interest in setting the agendas of nations not on the winning side of globalism. (However, one cannot expect OD textbook authors to be geostrategic thinkers, either.) Connectivity with other disciplines would also help the text; for example, a digression examining "King Lear" or "Julius Caesar" from an OD perspective might inform and entertain the reader. While this book could be improved, it is worth reading on it's own merits, and compares well to other texts in the field of OD. -Lloyd A. Conway

Excellent textbook for Organization Change and Dev't Class

As an OD practitioner and faculty who teaches Org Change, I find Cummings and Worley's book superb. The case studies are short enough to use in class. Students find the writing style clear and understandable. And the book grounds its practical advice in theories and models that students can use for years after completing the class. The instructor's guide provides excellent insights into cases, but gives poorly written assessment items for use on tests. All textbooks have tradeoffs. On the academic side, this book lacks references to empirical research that students could follow up on. On the practical side, it lacks comparisons between interventions that practitioners choose from. It doesn't provide a personal wisdom that some readers would want. But it does provide engaging content that's clear enough for students recently out of college and deep enough for mid-career professionals who are reading the book for a class.

Incredibly informative!

Over the years I've written a little about how to become a fabric designer. Seems like most of the up-and-coming pattern designers in our biz aspire to designing fabric too one day. And the q-biz is responding by hosting fabric design contests in a consistent way over the last year. This Field Guide might very well be the first mainstream published book in our neck of the woods to address this very interest.

Tapping into the experience of some of the more popular fabric designers (think Tula, Denyse, Amy and Jenean for example--and it's because we know them by first name that we can bestow them with "popular") Kimberly Kight (of the True Up blog) explains in great detail and with lots of visual examples how fabric design works, what the technical aspects are (repeats, spacing and motifs) and how to work with today's tech tools to create multiple collections. Oh, and there's the stuff about color and types of fabric that fill in the knowledge gaps too.

What I really like about this book is that Kimberly assumes from the start you whoever picks it up and follows its guidance will become a big enough name in the q-world to warrant her information on licensing and copyright. That's just cool!

Great Book in many areas of textile design

I got this book not knowing a whole lot about fabric design, just a little bit of exposure here and there to the industry. This book is not a how to necessarily for step by step how to design fabric (IE using photo shop or illustrator) but rather focuses on resources and pros and cons of different ways to design fabric (IE block printing, Spoonflower, mass production). The book also touches on some of the business ramifications of each arena such as minimum runs, cost per yard and what to look for when selecting a process. I definitley would reccomend this book for anyone thinking about doing any kind of fabric design for a business purpose.

A Handy Reference Tool (for writers of dialogue)

As a writer of fiction, I purchased ZOUNDS hoping for a comprehensive dictionary of interjections used in dialogue, and I was not disappointed.

In addition to the definition, many entries include anecdotal information, the origin of the interjection, and a comment on the timeframe of usage. For example, "as if" was first recorded in 1905, "score!" was popular among teenagers in the 1990's, and "hey, Abbott!" has not been used much since the 1950s. That information might save a writer of historical or near historical fiction from making an embarrassing blunder. Also quite valuable is the nine-page index at the end of the book, which provides a concise list of dialogue possibilities from aaayy to zzzzzp.

For general use, I agree with Dennis Laycock's review that this is a good book for the WC. For writers of dialogue, it's a handy reference tool.

Good book for the W.C.

Sitting down to read this book for an extended period of time is probably not a good idea; it's a bit dry for that. However, it's great for reading in five- or 10-minute spurts, thus - it's perfect for the bathroom.

Not to insult the author, who does a fine job of documenting the birth of hundreds of interjections. The story about Kipling and Twain competing to write the most ribald story is one I'll not forget. And I picked up a few obscure interjections that I plan to use and freak people out once in a while.

Pfft! Gut Shabbes! Fiddle-dee-dee! Bully! Toy toy! Ooh la la!

Let's face it, language would be a lot more boring without interjections, those odd little flourishes to emphasize whatever we're saying ("Drat! I dropped the cake!"). In "ZOUNDS!: A Browser's Dictionary of Interjections," Mark Dunn dissects the various interjections we say, and what they mean.

From "aayyy" to "zzzzp!", Dunn explores various interjections from the past and present, and they're a surprisingly colourful bunch -- there's the obvious little ones like "ah," "oh," "eh," and "aaaarrruuugah," which are mainly convenient noises.

But he also exxplores obscure little words ("beero!"), and ones that were used long ago or have fallen into disuse ("beauseant!"). Not to mention ones from other cultures ("Gut shabbes!"), or from movies ("Keeks!" "Nee!"). A disproportionate number seem to euphemisms for God ("Gosh all hemlock!"), or some rather impolite words ("Fudge!").

But he doesn't just tell us about these words, or what they mean. For example, it turns out that "ods bodkins" is actually a corruption of "God's bodkins" -- loosely translated, "God's little body," which was considered a very wicked phrase in Elizabethan times. Or that "slogan" is derived from an ancient Gaelic call to arms. Betcha didn't know any of that.

Moreover, Dunn explains them in an easy, chatty manner, as if he were a pal imparting various linguistic trivia. And he peppers the whole book with pop culture and literary references, as well as little "skits" to emphasize what they mean ("Dear girl, you have just destroyed all my cultures of the antibacterial Penicillium notatum!" "Oops!").

Even better, some of these interjections are so rare that they can serve two purposes: first, to serve as party trivia, such as "Did you know that the word 'begorra' may be connected to vivisection?". Second, some of them would make wonderful insults that no one can reply to.

"ZOUNDS!: A Browser's Dictionary of Interjections" is not only vastly entertaining, but tells us a lot about a part of language that nobody really thinks about. Imbars bidbib!

About the Author
Angus Konstam has written several books for Osprey, mainly on 18th century subjects. His recent works include Campaign 44 Pavia 1525 and Elite 67 Pirates 1660–1730. Angus previously worked as a Curator of Weapons at the Royal Armouries, Tower of London, and Chief Curator of the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum. He now devotes himself to full-time writing, indulging his passion for maritime and naval history to the maximum.
