Great book, but better and more recent is available
By Kindle Reader
"Make Sure of All Things" is a very helpful research tool that was published half a century ago by Jehovah's Witnesses. The first edition was published in 1953. It contained 70 main subject headings and organized over 5,000 scriptures according to subject on 416 pages. It was revised at least twice, once in 1957, and again in 1963. The 1963 edition was expanded to 512 pages and more subject headings, but it was never intended that this book answer every Bible question.
In 1985, a 448-page book entitled "Reasoning From the Scriptures" was published, again divided into 70 subject headings, intended to "answer questions of the sort that frequently are asked now". The answers are basically the same, but the focus of the material is much more current than the earlier editions of "Make Sure of All Things". As a result, "Make Sure" as no longer printed but continued to be available electronically in some languages for a number of years.
These two books are the direct and obvious inheritors of an earlier publication printed in 1909, called "Berean Bible Teacher's Manual". Part 2 of that 540+ page reference work contained a topical guide to about 40 main subjects and was followed by part 3, "Berean Topical Index" which in a dictionary-like form referenced scripture texts and other printed material. While the issues that concern Bible students have changed significantly over the years, and the more recent publications are focused on providing Bible answers to those concerns, even the casual observer will notice that the fundamental doctrinal discussions always remain the same.
These publications, while very helpful, are only a very small part of the vast amount of research information published by Jehovah's Witnesses and currently available to everyone. The "Watchtower Online Library" website found at "JW dot Org" (see "Publications" tab) contains not only the latest edition of "Reasoning From the Scriptures" but also the vast Bible encyclopedia "Insight on the Scriptures" with its comprehensive coverage of every name, person, place, animal, plant, event, and concept found in the Bible. It includes an index to discussions on nearly every text found in the Bible. There is a lot more available there in hundreds of languages, including downloadable copies of the Bible in over 100 languages. (The number is constantly increasing, so rather than embarrassing myself by giving out-of-date information, I recommend that you visit the site to find out how many languages are currently available!) You can also install the "JW Library" app for your Kindle Fire, or other Android device, which is available right here on Amazon, and that will give you a lot more in the way of study tools, including an excellent Greek-English Interlinear translation of the New Testament or Christian Greek Scriptures. So, save yourself some money, and get the electronic reference material, unless, of course, you are a collector. (While you are at it, you might want to download on "JW dot Org" the "Research Guide for Jehovah's Witnesses--2014 Edition" which is a tremendously helpful reference tome, much more extensive than "Make Sure" or "Reasoning".)

A REVISION OF THE WATCHTOWER'S "TOPICAL INDEX'
By Steven H Propp
This 1965 publication of the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society (Jehovah's Witnesses) is of the 4"x6" format, but has more than 500 pages (with thin, "Bible-style" paper). It is not illustrated. The book is a revision and expansion of the Watchtower's 1953 book, "Make Sure of All Things". It was itself later superseded by the 1985 book, REASONING FROM THE SCRIPTURES. The books contain individual topics (e.g., "Cross," "Gehenna," "Tongues, Speaking in," etc.), followed by biblical quotations.
Here are some topics addressed in the book, that often illustrate distinctive doctrines of the WBTS:
"Rebaptism in Order When There Is Conviction that One Did Not Properly Understand Jehovah's Provision for Approach to Him or Was Not in Acceptable Condition to Become His Servant at Time of Former Baptism." (Pg. 42)
"Christmas: Date and customs of pagan origin; Jesus not born in cold late northern December." (Pg. 63)
"A Dead Person Is Unconscious, Inactive." (Pg. 143)
"Jesus Christ used Gehenna to Represent the Worst Punishment that Could Befall a Human, COmplete Destruction with No Hope of Resurrection." (Pg. 210)
"Miraculous gifts to be done away with when Christian congregation reached maturity." (Pg. 214)
"HELLFIRE: Impossible for the Dead to be Tormented; They are Unconscious... Hell (Hades) Not a Lake of Fire, but Eventually Cast into Lake of Fire, Meaning Eternal Destruction... Upright as Well as Wicked People Go to Hell... Hope Held Out for Those In Hell; Deliverance Possible... Scriptures Contrast Life and Death, Not Life in Happiness and Life in Torment" (Pg. 229-231)
"Jesus instructed followers to commemorate his death, not his birth... Jesus' birth not in cold December; date based on pagan associations" (Pg. 236-237)
"Jesus Christ Rewarded with Immortality at His Resurrection; No Longer Subject to Death... Heirs of the Heavenly Kingdom Receive Immortality When Raised from Death... Human Soul Subject to Death; Not Immortal" (Pg. 252-253)
"Jesus was not God-man, God in the flesh, but was God's Son, a lesser one than God." (Pg. 255)
"True Christians to Keep Separate from All False Worship." (Pg. 262)
"Apostasy from True Christian Faith Foretold." (Pg. 417)
"Christ's Return Not a Literal Coming Back to Earth." (Pg. 431)
"Sheol-Hades Is the Grave (the Common Grave of All Mankind, Not an Individual Grave...Those in Sheol are dead, not merely separated from God... Both Good Persons and Bad Ones in Sheol-Hades... Jesus Christ was in there." (Pg. 448-450)
"Man Himself is a Soul... Human soul dies; not immortal... Lower Animals Also Called Souls... When spirit goes out, conscious life ceases" (Pg. 463-464)
"These verses (Mk 16:17-18) of doubtful authorship." (Pg. 480)
"Holy Spirit is God's Active Force, Not a Person." (Pg. 487)
"Trinitarian statement in 1 John 5:7, found in some Bibles, is spurious." (Pg. 488)

There is some good in every boy.
By Richard E. Smith
Putting aside religious differences and looking for the best material out there, in spite of a shortcoming here and there, I place this book with Nave's Topical Bible. It may be the best thing that the publisher has produced. It arms the believer with scriptural tools that answer many arguments. If you don't want to use the New World Translation bible quotations, then use any other bible that you want. In spite of differences in doctrine, there are faithful servants of god in many religious groups. Whoever the actual person was that put this thing together, he clearly was of the chosen of god. And you can't beat the price on the used market. Why this book is out of print, I'll never understand. In my mind it is a masterpiece. Someone told me once that it was taken out of print by the publisher because it gave too much power to the faithful. We should want to give power to the faithful, right?
regards, Rick Smith
