About the Author
Denise Eide is an educator, author, speaker, and curriculum designer. She has worked in the field of literacy instruction since 1995. Her specialty is teaching reading and spelling to educators and parents by helping them understand the logic of English and demonstrating teaching methods that ensure success for students of all learning styles. Her desire is for these methods to be available to all students, parents, and educators, leading to a dramatic reversal in America's literacy crisis. She lives in Rochester, Minnesota with her four children.

Best summary of the rules of spelling I've found

If you teach reading or spelling, professionally or to your own family, or want to improve your own spelling, this book will give you the wheres and whys in a readable and useful format. Everything has excellent examples, in the Goldielocks fashion (not too much and not too few). I'm very happy with the reasonable price, the quality of the book (strong spine, non-flimsy pages), and the whole concept.
BTW, the second edition has a comparison of British, Canadian, and USian spellings, but, IMO, is not worth getting if you already have the first.
Also, in case you are unaware, there is a whole teaching program called The Logic of English sold by the author. Samples are on her web page. (And no, I don't work for her -- I just appreciate her concise and clear writing.)

English isn't so tricky afterall...

Short, sweet, and to the point. Definitely not a long, boring, drone on the English language. Easy to read and implement. Based on the Orton-Gillingham method, Denise Eide masterfully teaches how to unlock the mysteries of the English language. For example, I always wondered why words "have" and "love" had a silent e, it wasn't "jumping back to make the vowel say it's name". With this book, the mystery is solved...English words don't end in the letter "v"! This is just one of many silent e "jobs". Uncovering the Logic of English is full of gems like these that have opened my eyes to the reasonableness of English. It's made me a more effective teacher in presenting spelling and phonics to my children in a sound and sensible manner. This book has totally changed the way I think about the English language.

Our Son Spells So Well Now!

My son's writing teacher at the Community Learning Center in Clearwater, FL introduced me to this book. I have a B.A. in English and I learned so much from reading this! I would read a page and my kids and husband would hear me in the next room say, "Oh my gosh!" I just kept finding out more and more truth about the English language and spelling and got rid of so much false information. My son struggled with spelling because he is very logical and not particularly a visual learner. He is spelling almost effortlessly now and this is such a huge relief - he had hated writing because he couldn't think with the spelling before. Now he understands and is an easy speller! Thanks so much to the Community Learning Center and to the author, Denise Eide. This book improved the quality of our son's life.
