About the Author
Born in Germany, Dr. E. F. Schumacher (1911–1977) fled to England after the rise of Nazism and, with the help of John Maynard Keynes, taught economics at Oxford University. He is the author of Small Is Beautiful, the book that "changed the way many people think about bigness and its human cost" (New York Times).

A Peace Corps Volunteer Looks Back at Schumacher Economics

Probably more than ever, we need to go back to the 1970s and reread these Schumacher classics about humanistic economics -- incl "Small is Beautiful". As a Peace Corps Volunteer, working in Africa, I wish I had had the chance to read these first. A lot of things would have made more sense. Today, thanks to big banks, WTO, big mining and oil companies, and a determinedly retrograde State Dept pushing their interests, we're back to big investment, big aid schemes, and the subordination of Third World populations. Today, ALL of the foreign aid amounts to only 1/7th of the wealth the biggies are extracting from those nations. Pretty sad for a one-time PC Volunteer. JAT
