TREASURE TROVE OF LIFE-SAVING TIPS

With the publication of SIX ATTITUDES FOR WINNERS,Dr. Norman Vincent Peale has proven once again that he remains the genius that he has proven to be in his other seminal works:"THE TOUGH-MINDED OPTIMIST(1989), TREASURY OF COURAGE AND CONFIDENCE(1970), SIN, SEX AND SELF-CONTROL(1965),TTHE AMAZING RESULTS OF POSITIVE THINKING() and more.SIX ATTITUDES FOR WINNERS is replete with sagacious prescriptions that should be read by anyone in the throes of spiritual, and physiological problems, and I bet our contemporary society is teeming with people in this category. This boooklet is fascinating in several respects but the section that helped me the most is titled "A Winners Guide to Eleven Common Problems:(pp. 69-70.) Dr. Peale suggests we take the following steps when faced with problems in our daily lives:
1. Affirm, affirm and continue to affirm until you believe that with God's help you can cope with the difficulty 2. No Panic. Let there be no panic, for a difficulty can never be handled emotionally 3.Organize the difficulty. Take it apart and study its component elements. New insights will come to you 4.Think. Always apply sound, reasonable thinking to your problems 5.Do not ask "Why me?". Understand that life has its surprises.Everybody has difficulty sooner or later 6.Acceptance is important. Tell God that that if you have to live with this difficulty you will accept His will and know that he will give you the strength. Constantly remind yourself that nothing is going to happen to you today that you and God, working together cannot handle it 7.Practice patience for some difficulties are not handled overnight 8. Learn from your problems. In other words, look for educational value in difficulties so that you can handle similar situations in the future 9.God is bigger.Believe that God is bigger than than problem that you could ever be confronted with 10.Let go and let God. When you have done all this, put the difficulty in God's divien hands and have confidence that he will take care of it.

About the Author
Carol Krebs,RT,RDMS,RVT is an ultrasound consultant and instructor. She has worked in the medical profession for thirty years, twenty-five in ultrasound at Louisiana State University School of Medicine. She is experienced in all categories of ultrasound and specializes in vascular ultrasound.

Charles Odwin,BS,RDMS has been active in ultrasound since 1979 and is a Registered Diagnostic Sonographer. He helped create the local ultrasound society in New York in 1983 and is a past-president of the New York State Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers. Mr. Odwin has published multiple articles in ultrasound journals and has received an award for Publishing Excellence from the Journal of Diagnostic Medical Sonography. As an artist he has contributed as a medical illustrator to ultrasound test books. He is an instructor in ultrasound schools and is the primary author of several books and contributing author in others. Mr. Odwin is currently teaching ultrasound to emergency department physicians.

Arthur C. Fleischer, MD, Professor of Radiology and Radiologic Sciences, Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Chief of Diagnostic Sonography, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, Tennessee In addition to Sonography in Obstetrics & Gynecology, Dr. Fleischer has edited several other books in this field. Don't waste your money.

This review book was assigned to my senior ultrasound program in our last quarter of classes. A colleague of mine who is a radiologic technologist had used the A&L RT review book and found it helpful, so my expectations when it was assigned were to be able to learn and to have a good array of review questions.

However, this book seems to be a compendium of outdated information rife with typos that would be hilarious if they were not so frequent. I am finding that working through it is about a 75% waste of time. Who edited this?.... Anyone?...... Anyone?

Another problem is that images are labeled wrong, or not labeled (e.g.: "Name the structure with the arrow on example 5-113," and then there is no arrow. Or worse, the arrow clearly, unmistakably points to the aorta and the answer is IVC.).

The OB/GYN chapters are better than the physics and abdomen chapters; the latter have significant errors in them. My biggest problem is that as a whole these questions require very little critical thinking and are not "pitched" at a level commensurate with what I believe the ARDMS registries require (I will update this review after taking my registries in Mar.-April).

And now, for amusement value, some of the misprints:

for intussusception, "intersuppection"

"pleura effusion" --- and the list goes on.

You get what you pay for considering this was 1/2 the price of some of the other better review books. There were multiple errors throughout the entire book. I won't go into them as most all have been cited in other reviews.

Stephen Dobyns is the author of more than thirty novels and poetry collections, including The Church of Dead Girls, Cold Dog Soup, and Cemetery Nights. Among his many honors are a Melville Cane Award, Pushcart prizes, a National Poetry Series prize, and three National Endowment for the Arts fellowships. His novels have been translated into twenty languages, and his poetry has appeared in the Best American Poetry anthology. Dobyns, who has taught at the University of Iowa and Sarah Lawrence College, teaches creative writing at Warren Wilson College.

If you're a fan of Stephen King, this novel is for you. Not exactly what could be described as a "thriller"; much more slow-paced (but in a good way), making for extraordinary character development.

THE BURN PALACE takes place in a small Rhode Island town where things have suddenly gone very, very wrong. Missing newborns, roaming coyotes and Satanists...leaving one detective to find the answers while battling a recent break up and a bumbling "acting" police chief.

Stephen Dobyns hits it out of the park with this one. I will be searching out more of his work.

THE BURN PALACE is worth savoring slowly and re-reading

It has been some time since the prolific Stephen Dobyns has favored us with a work of fiction. EATING NAKED, a short story compilation, released at the turn of the century (yes, that sounds strange to me as well), and since then he has confined himself to publishing several collections of poetry. THE BURN PALACE is reminiscent of some of his past work, but nonetheless stands well on its own, seeming at first blush to fit comfortably into this or that genre but ultimately becoming somewhat difficult to classify.
Brewster, Rhode Island, is the unsettling setting for the book; it is a small town whose main industry is summer tourism. Brewster otherwise lies dormant in the off-season, perhaps no more so than in late October, as Halloween approaches and the area all but goes into hibernation. Dobyns uses the opening chapter to introduce a flurry of characters and situations, all of whom eventually intertwine and interact with each other in one form or another.
Things kick off in dramatic fashion when an infant is kidnapped from a local hospital, and a snake is left in the unfortunate baby’s bassinet. Everything is important in these opening pages, from the circumstances under which the infant was snatched to the attitude of the townspeople, who ultimately appear to be more concerned with the presence of the snake than the absence of the baby. This state of affairs includes the mother of the child, who indicates that the child was the spawn of Satan. This, of course, gets the normally quiet town rocking and rolling.
Woody Potter, an extremely taciturn detective, is put in charge of the investigation. Potter, whose personality is such as to render him good at his job but unlucky in love, is faced with multiple problems, as Brewster quickly spirals out of control. When other people begin disappearing, and the local coyote population becomes uncharacteristically aggressive, a supernatural element indeed seems to be at work. There surely are elements of darkly comic relief throughout the book, but the narrative is as likely to induce a gasp as a chuckle at any given moment. The tale itself is not so much linear as circular --- think of the play “Our Town” by Thornton Wilder --- with many characters doing many different things, some good and some bad.
One of the more interesting characters is Carl Krause, who is a disaster in the making. All he needs is a prod or two in the wrong direction. Another is his stepson, Hercel McGarty, Jr. who directly and indirectly influences the events that comprise the heart of the book. It is Hercel Jr.’s pet snake that is found in the baby’s bassinet at the beginning of the story. Hercel Jr. himself is one of the more noble figures of the tale, special in ways that can go one way or the other. As his stepfather deteriorates mentally, Hercel Jr. will be called upon to stand up and be counted in ways that he could never anticipate. Before the tale ends, he and the town of Brewster will be forever changed.
THE BURN PALACE revisits, albeit in a somewhat different manner, some of the themes that Dobyns examined in 1997’s THE CHURCH OF DEAD GIRLS, specifically with respect to the manner in which a small town veneer can be quickly stripped when trouble comes calling. Those who fondly recall the “Twilight Zone” episode titled “The Monsters are Due on Maple Street” will find much to love here as well, as the center of Brewster --- its citizens and their interlocking relationships --- fails to hold in the face of adversity.
Part crime novel, part horror story, and part character study, THE BURN PALACE is worth savoring slowly and re-reading.

Couldn't He Come Up with His Own Plot?

I really wanted to like this book, but I've realized that the only book of Dobyns' that I've really liked is THE CHURCH OF DEAD GIRLS. Everything else I've read has been disappointing, and BOY IN THE WATER was downright boring.

THE BURN PALACE starts out promisingly as spooky things start happening in a sleepy Rhode Island town. A baby is kidnapped; a local investigator is killed. Particularly aggressive coyotes begin wandering around town, and a ten-year old boy, Hercel McGarty, realizes he has some minor telekinetic abilities.

If it sounds like a Stephen King set-up, it is, from the New England setting through the kid with psychic powers, through covens and Satanism.

What kept me going for the first couple of hundred pages was the portrait of small-town life and the question of whether the events are supernatural or natural with rational explanations. There's a new-age center in the middle of downtown, and the characters there are consistently the most interesting. There's also a moderate exploration of Wicca and Satanism, which had the potential to be so much more interesting than it turned out to be.

Dobyns started to lose me by the second half, when the book starts to go on and on without moving anything forward. That's when the suspense starts to peter out, and when the reading experience goes from "rather leisurely, but enough to keep me interested" to "oh God, please get on with it!"

Part of the problem, for me at least, was how Dobyns seems to cobble together so many things that have been done before. For example, for the first hundred pages of the book, we keep hearing (explicitly) how the kidnapped baby might be Satan's baby: the characters refer time and time again to Rosemary's Baby. Do you mean to tell me that this novelist was unable to come up with his own plot, so he borrowed someone else's and kindly acknowledged that fact? So many of the other elements seem lifted from Stephen King, too; but throw in a particularly slow-moving police procedural and you have a book that overstays its welcome by at least 100 pages.

The resolutions are all highly unsatisfying. There are many mysteries in the book, none of which are resolved in a satisfying way? (You can keep reading - no spoilers here.) Why the kidnapper replaced a baby with a snake and how s/he got hold of that snake: unresolved. The mystery of the coyotes - resolved in a way that makes little sense. The motivations of the criminals/bad guys of the piece: unresolved and, apparently, unimportant to the author. The relevance of the boy's psychic abilities - unexplained.

Another thing that author did that drove me mad: In the middle of a scene that is supposed to be action-oriented, the author simply stops. He then later goes back and described what happened in the past tense. Why would a writer bring readers to a place of excitement and then abruptly slam the brakes on that excitement?

I was also surprised by the large number of egregious grammatical errors, as well as typos, in this book. Many phrases of the "who he was talking to" variety. Come on, author and publisher: I need to respect a book that I'm reading, especially one that I've paid $20+ for.

On the positive side: I think the cover is fabulous. But overall this book is way too long, too contrived, and too unsatisfying. The worshipful blurb from Stephen King on the back cover should have tipped me off. No more Stephen Dobyns for me.

Good improvements over 1st edition

The examples (cases) in the appendices to several of the chapters are a good addition, which improves on the 1st addition, moving me up from 3 stars to 4 starts. The new chapter on contingent consideration is well done, as is the expanded chapter on advanced valuation methods (real options are an important topic that has not received enough attention by the financial reporting community). I have two suggestions for further improvement. First financial instruments commonly used by non-financial companies are not covered. I'd suggest coverage of employee stock options and other awards. And, I'd suggest coverage of common derivatives used as hedges, such as interest rate swaps, forward sale/purchase contracts and futures. Second, I'd suggest the addition of an "auditing/documentation considerations" section at the end of each chapter. Even for company management, the auditing requirements are important, as the entity's financial staff needs to prepare appropriate documentation to support their conclusions.

JONATHAN POWELL worked for the British Foreign Office for fifteen years until, in 1994, Tony Blair poached him to join his ‘kitchen cabinet' as his Chief of Staff. Since leaving the Prime Minister's office, he has worked with a Geneva-based NGO, negotiating between governments and terrorist groups in Europe, Asia and Africa, and has now established his own NGO, InterMediate, to continue this work. He lives in London with his wife and two daughters.

The Art of Jaw

Financiers sometimes like to compare negotiations to military strategy, with books like Sun Tzu’s “The Art of War” co-opted for the purpose. Jonathan Powell’s provocative “Terrorists at the Table” is a reminder that the art of the deal matters on a whole different level when the result really is life and death. It’s a primer like few others, written by a British former political operative and diplomat of few illusions and stubborn hope. It’s also darkly funny.

Powell is no ivory-tower theoretician. A former Foreign Office diplomat who served for 10 years as chief of staff to Prime Minister Tony Blair, he was the chief British government negotiator on Northern Ireland. As such he had a significant hand in implementing the 1998 Good Friday accord there that largely ended three decades of sectarian killing.

Powell extracts lessons, tips and anecdotes from a dozen conflicts involving armed non-state groups, drawing on negotiation theory but also personal experience and interviews with many of those involved. Some of the conflicts are now over, for example in South Africa and Indonesia, some are now in advanced talks, as in Colombia, and others are unresolved. They cover nationalist, ethnic, religious and political strife.

Though conflicts vary, his basic framework is this: Make initial contact with the armed group (difficult, dangerous and sometimes even illegal in itself); develop a back channel independent of public rhetoric (which may need to last for years); build trust in secret deniable talks (often via small personal gestures, or sharing food and lodging); then move to formal negotiations, ideally without preconditions. Engineer a solid win on a topic of importance for each side at the start, ensure the process is clear and robust, and keep going when things get tough.

A third party can often help, and indeed Powell says peace-making has entered a “venture capital” phase in the last decade, with individuals and small NGOs taking on the role previously exercised by the United Nations and governments. The cost is low, and one success in 100 makes the effort worthwhile. Powell in 2011 set up Inter Mediate, a charity focusing on mediation and negotiation in especially intractable conflicts around the world.

While the participants in a conflict are the only ones who can make peace, certain qualities in a mediator can help, Powell writes, including the ability to tactfully soften or censor messages from one side to the other; a capacity for charm bordering on manipulation; a temper never lost except on purpose; and infinite patience, for example during marathon recitals of historical grievances. He approvingly cites British diplomat Percy Cradock’s first law of diplomacy: The hardest negotiations are with your own side.

Powell sees the quirky and human side of a grim business. At a key point in one peace process a diamond-shaped table has to be brought in so that two adversaries can sit at it – partly facing each other, as one of them wishes, and partly side-by-side, as the other demands. Two leaders of rival rebel factions from Indonesia never speak to each other but sometimes meet accidentally along the aisles of a supermarket in Stockholm, where they both live. An unexpected th� dansant at a London hotel requires Israeli and Palestinian back-channel contacts to shout secret proposals to make themselves heard over the orchestra as aged couples twirl on the dance floor.

Financial dealmakers will recognize some of the strategems and tactics, but will also concede that what for them may often be little more than a lucrative game can, in Powell’s world, save lives that would otherwise end violently.

No conflict is insoluble, the author says. Any armed movement with significant political support or buoyed by a real grievance will need to be spoken with in the long run, though often while still fighting. Definitive victory over such groups is very difficult to achieve, and usually won’t resolve the underlying issues. No democracy can kill all its enemies, he argues, and trying to do so is a misunderstanding of the role of military force.

Creating instead conditions for violent groups to take a political path saves lives and reduces human misery, though many unsavory compromises can be required. Memories are short, and how to defuse conflicts must be constantly relearned, he says. The biggest mistake lies in declaring any group off limits for dialogue, though governments routinely do this before finding in the end that talking is their least bad option after all.

Powell’s precepts will anger some readers, who might wonder if they apply, for example, to jihadist groups. Yes, he says – eventually, on some topics, and with some members or factions. History suggests violent groups that lack support fizzle out. Those with staying power may be fought, and the hearts and minds of their supporters wooed, but talking is also an effective strand of counterinsurgency.

Uncomfortable, but?

Mr. Powell presents an interesting hypothesis to the age-old problem of terrorism. That is, the only solution to terrorism is to engage with and negotiate with the terrorists. He comes to this belief through his experiences with the IRA, as well as with other "terrorist" groups. His arguments are persuasive. Coming from a lifetime career in law enforcement, I was extremely uncomfortable with the idea. I still am. This made for a very tough read for me, but I'm glad I stuck it out. Powell does make a lot of sense. While I still believe in the "old ways", I see his point. I'm very glad that there are people with the patience of Mr. Powell to deal with the "terrorists".

Great read for anyone interested in peace processes

This book is more like two books inside one cover, but both are excellent. The longer portion is not about why to negotiate with terrorists, but rather how. Powell draws on his own experience negotiating an end to the Northern Ireland conflict as well as interviews, firsthand reports, and other detailed accounts of other peace negotiations. I believe all of it applies equally to negotiating an end to any war, with terrorists or without. That probably shouldn’t surprise us. Terrorism, as Powell points out, is a means, not an end; it follows that there is not much difference between negotiating with terrorists and negotiating with insurgents more generally. This portion of the book is an unusually comprehensive practical guide, from establishing the earliest secret contacts through to implementation of peace accords. I would recommend it to anyone who engages in or teaches about peace negotiations.

The second book-within-a-book matches the title and is laid out mostly in the first and last chapters. Here Powell argues why, no matter how vile terrorists’ tactics, no matter how outlandish their demands, governments should always be willing to talk to them. History shows that as terrorists emerge from their hideouts, engage in talks, confront reality and seek legitimacy, they will moderate. There is one major exception to his argument, however: Powell emphasizes early on that the book concerns only those terrorist groups that have significant “political support.” (I found this gratifying, as my own research is revealing that public support is the major criterion in determining whether it’s necessary to include armed groups in peace negotiations.) What he does not clarify (nor does my research) is just how much political support we’re talking about—he gives a few examples of groups like the Symbionese Liberation Army that had virtually no support, but that might not be enough guidance to distinguish, say, which armed opposition groups should be involved in Syria’s peace process.

Powell’s prose typically starts with a general statement, followed by two or three paragraphs of real-life case details. This means that while the book offers theory (in the sense of cross-case generalizations), it does so mostly through stories. Having been immersed in scholarly literature the last few years, I found the absence of formal citations frustrating, although there is a thorough and nicely organized bibliography. What the book lacks in academic rigor it makes up for in breadth and practicality. A statement like, “often when things look at their bleakest from outside there is about to be a breakthrough” (p. 197), while not exactly a testable hypothesis, is surely welcome wisdom to a negotiator or mediator. The practitioner-friendly approach does not mean Powell is simplistic—indeed, he takes on tricky topics like the peace-versus-justice debate credibly and thoughtfully. I wish he had dealt a bit more with the subject of civil society in peacemaking; perhaps he omitted it because his own experience took place in a democracy that has mechanisms for the public to express its will. Still, this book offers both a worthy message and a wealth of helpful wisdom on how to make peace with even the most brutal of enemies.
