About the Author
Fred S. Kleiner (Ph.D., Columbia University) is the author or co-author of the 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th, and 15th editions of GARDNER'S ART THROUGH THE AGES: A GLOBAL HISTORY, as well as the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd editions of GARDNER'S ART THROUGH THE AGES: A CONCISE HISTORY, and more than 100 publications on Greek and Roman art and architecture, including A HISTORY OF ROMAN ART, also published by Cengage. He has taught the art history survey course for more than three decades, first at the University of Virginia and, since 1978, at Boston University, where he is currently professor of art history and archaeology. From 1985 to 1998, he was editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Archaeology. Long acclaimed for his inspiring lectures and dedication to students, Professor Kleiner won Boston University's Metcalf Award for Excellence in Teaching, as well as the College Prize for Undergraduate Advising in the Humanities in 2002, and he is a two-time winner of the Distinguished Teaching Prize in the College of Arts and Sciences Honors Program. In 2007, he was elected fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London, and, in 2009, in recognition of lifetime achievement in publication and teaching, fellow of the Text and Academic Authors Association.

Excellent Survey Book

Been using this book for 5 years now with my AP students. It is thorough and easy to read. I can't say that it's always a "fun" journey, but compared to other texts I've read, it packs a ton of useful contextual information in very digestable parts. Several of my students have told me that they've learned more about world history from this book and class than any of their other history classes combined! The images are of exceptional quality with excellent supplemental information in each chapter. The timeline fold out is great, but I've never really checked out the accompanied CD. If I had my drothers, I would drop a few 20th century artists and add a few others, i.e., Pierre Bonnard, Ad Reinhardt, Richard Diebenkorn Richard Estes, Beth Murray and Sean Scully to name a few. Considering that this is not the latest edition, it is a bit pricey new, but good used versions seem to show up on here at pretty affordable rates.

Almost perfect, but needs some study guide

A great presentation of Christian art throughout the ages. My only issue is that other history books at this particular level tend to have either end-of-chapter quiz questions to help review or another decent study guide by the same author for sale. This textbook omits that for a graduate level feeling of a textbook (meaning it lacks any extra guidance beside the written information), although it was incorporated into undergraduate level classes at Azusa Pacific University this fall 2013 semester. I would appreciate that the next edition of this art history textbook to address this study guide issue.

Yes, this book is expensive... But it's worth every penny. I bought this book because I had to for my Art History class. My campus bookstore had a crappy three-hole-punch, loose-leaf version for about the same price so it was a no-brainer for me to upgrade to this hardback version instead.
The care that has gone into the writing and presentation of this book is amazing. It presents the history of art (and architecture) from the first cave paintings up until modern day. The online component ("ArtStudy Online") of this book is well worth utilizing, it has videos that expand upon the book topics, and high-quality zoomable images that feature relevant works of art the author couldn't squeeze into the book, plus easily accessible glossaries (with pronunciations) for every chapter.
I bought this book knowing nothing about art history and I've learned an incredible amount. The book presents the information very clearly. The pictures are crisp and clear and almost every image has a scale next to it so you can understand how big the art is.
This book is huge. It's 1088 pages and weighs a lot and is a work of art in itself! I'll be keeping this on my bookshelf long after my courses are over.
