Quite out of date

First part of the book is pretty good. Second half of the book about listening to various international transmissions, is woefully out of date. This second edition is circa 1993. My advice would be to find a more recent text/

Informative and pleasant reading to enhance your radio listening hobby

This book is a must for anyone listening to shortwave radios or interested in becoming an amateur radio licensed individual. I've yet to finish reading this book because I'm enjoying everything in it from nostalgia to the ionospheric layers in the atmosphere above the earth that bounce signals back and around the planet.
Mr. Helms presents his materials in a smooth, easy to understand manner, that invites the reader to keep on turning the pages. I will eventually go back into this book to glean the frequency listings out of his carefully laid out paragraphs. He talks about antennas in a digestible way that makes the subject interesting as well as informative.
Early in 2013 I decided to study and take the Technician FCC test to become a 'HAM' radio operator and succeeded in this endeavor. Next I purchased a book titled 'The ARRL General Class License Manual' and began a long and sometimes memory splitting journey toward passing this next FCC test. I was simultaneous reading Mr. Helm's book and it not only cleared up many questions that arose about radio and radio propagation, but it also helped me answer test questions properly! I passed the General Class test missing only one question!
When I finish this book I'll come back here and add any pertinent thoughts that arise. If you are fascinated with radio and listening to the world in so called 'real time' I recommend you learn how to do it and get the most from the hobby. You will not regret it. I know we think of the internet as the most current form of information gathering that exists but think about it, how can the internet beat the immediacy of hearing live events as they happen?
Many considerations one needs to make when deciding to listen to the world via shortwave radio are covered in the book. This book helps the beginner in preparing to listen not only by explaining the operation of the radio frequency spectrum, but also with the mechanical aspects involved; including radio choices, antenna needs and seasonal as well as chronological listening periods. Things that most people haven't a clue about.
Again, when I do finish this book I will return to this review with a few more specifics that I feel will interest potential purchasers. Until then, happy shortwave listening.
