Good for the curious looking for personal experiences

A book about the subtle energy that is in and around us, a part of us, a central part.

As the author has a PH.D., I was hoping for more research and not so many anecdotal stories. If you are a skeptic this book could just give you cause to remain skeptic. If you are believer but are looking for a somewhat scientific explanation this book is disappointing. If you are curious and looking for some personal stories this book might be for you. The book was written in 1998 so provides a perspective on this topic from a slightly historical, rather than current, viewpoint that might be interesting to the historian.

The book also has exercises throughout the chapters that might help the curious reader explore the theory and look for their own experiences so to accept or reject it. I suspect that believers already know these or similar exercises and that skeptics would just view them as silly.

So, I recommend the book for those curious in the subject and interested in personal stories, particularly those looking for personal experiences to accept or reject the idea.

A jumbled mess

I'm a granola-crunching, chakra-balancing New Ager, and I actually threw this book away rather than pass it on to a used bookstore and some unsuspecting customer. It's ludicrously inaccurate. The author "explains" his ideas by zooming from reiki to the chakras to feng shui concepts in the space of a few paragraphs, but he never cites any of these ancient and self-contained systems accurately or with integrity. Yes, these systems are all related at a basic level, but this book reads like a bunch of new age pamphlets that got accidentally shuffled together.

He describes this therapist who felt drained after she hugged her depressed patients. He counseled her to stop hugging them because "energy flows downhill," and bam, she no longer felt drained. Amazing! Now, if he'd shown her how to shield her energy, stop the draining effect, and maybe channel some positive energy into her clients while also giving them therapeutic hugs, there might have been some useful info in that section.

But it was when I got to the line "And here is a poem by the Native American poet Starhawk..." that I started laughing so hard I dropped the book. Folks, Starhawk is a cultural and ethnic Jew, a witch, and a co-founder of some major feminist Pagan movements, and well known for all these things. He's not only misinformed, he obviously didn't fact-check anything he wrote.

Ignore this hodgepodge. Some alternative starting texts would be: The Psychic Energy Workbook by Miller and Harper, Wheels of Life by Anodea Judith (a Western perspective on the chakra system), or Reiki: the Ultimate Guide.

Subtle Quackery

I actually bought this because I thought it might have some interesting material. Instead it's a hodge-podge of pseudoscience, whatever studies back up the author's opinions, and a pretty dopey logic line.
I immediately caught the problems with the feng shui material (only because I've studied with an authentic master for years). Because that information was riddled with errors, I began to question much of the other information.
You can't have statements like "appliances we use every day are potentially hazardous," and "our use of electric power dramatically alters our magnetic enviroment, and unnatural fields have potentially serious impact on us," then claim that feng shui uses electrically powered objects such as air conditioners (the power-hungriest electrical gadget) and televisions to stimulate "disharmonious or undesirable energy patterns." Friends, that is NOT authentic feng shui, which seeks to work with the electromagnetics of the planet!
The entire line of reasoning the author puts forth stinks; his versions contradict a lot of information on the same studies written just a few years ago, which leads me to think that he made up his own idea about the results of several of the studies. Winifred Gallagher's "The Power of Place" is much more fact-based (even with its conceptual problems with Feng Shui) and a much finer, more engrossing read than this piece of fluff.

A fine, gripping war novel

"Battle Cry" was Leon Uris's first novel and it's by far his best. Set right after Pearl Harbor, it's the story of the Marines in the Second World War and of one squad of Marines in particular, led by (and narrated by) Mac, a crusty old sergeant who has seen generations of boys pass through his command.

The story moves quickly through basic training to combat, and comes to a shattering climax with an all-out battle against the Japanese forces in the Pacific. As much as the story Uris tells so compellingly, we are held by his characters: Danny Forrester, the all-American boy; Andy the Swede, hating women indiscriminately until he meets the woman of his dreams far from home; Levin from Brooklyn, who knew what he had to do, and did it magnificently; Shining Lighttower, the Navajo, who really didn't want to go back to the reservation after all, and Sam Huxley, their colonel, who wanted glory for himself and his boys at any price, even if the price included all their lives.

Technically, Uris isn't a very good writer, but he is one helluva storyteller, and one of his greatest strengths is in plain dialogue between his characters, which shows up to much better advantage here than it did in his later books. It's in the dialogue that his characters come vibrantly alive; we understand how a disparate bunch of 18 and 19 year olds, kids like anybody else, can throw their lives away in battle rather than face the possibility of a defeat which would be worse than death. Uris shows us through his characters the men who made the Marines what they are.

Leon Uris' "Battle Cry"

An outstanding piece of WWII historical fiction. Unlike other great works of this genre' (Herman Wouk's "War and Remembrance" for instance), this tale is not told from the perspective of the colonels and generals, but rather as experienced by the U.S. Marine sergeants and privates.

The tale thoroughly and patiently follows a group of young men from the train stations where they left their hometowns, through boot camp and training, and onto the beaches of Guadalcanal and Tarawa atoll where they fell in combat. Uris did not all neglect the issue of back home wives and girlfriends, who are so very important to men isolated so far from home.

His first novel, Uris wrote this from his own experience. He was a WWII enlisted Marine combat veteran in the Pacific. First published in 1953, this book was written while memories were still fresh. In a way, it's a bit dated, with terminology and (superior) social values from an America of yesterday. On the other hand, Marine and Navy veterans will recognize the jargon and behaviors that are still in use today. Tradition.

A reviewer has criticized the slow opening pace. I disagree. The device was used to well acquaint the reader with and help him/her to grow to know and love the players, just as these Marines loved their "buddies".

I noted in the author's epilogue that he strongly and repeatedly disclaimed any connection of the fictional officers in his story (he even names them) to any real life personalities he had served under. Glaringly absent was a similar disclaimer regarding the enlisted men in his story. I infer from this that many of the colorful enlisted characters of the book might be representations of Pfc Uris' actual wartime colleagues. A memorial to them, if you will. Interesting.

Uris used an unusual and successful style technique in "Battle Cry". The tale is sometimes written in third person narrative, and at other times narrated in first person by a veteran sergeant in the battalion named Mac. But it's really about the teenage boys that did most of the fighting . . . sometimes hand to hand. Again, Uris was not in a hurry and patiently let the story play out. At times it is slow and monotonous, as was the wartime Marine life. At other times the action is overwhelming. Writing realistically from life experience, the battle scenes are not an organized test of marksmanship between two opposing teams . . . the fighting is chaos. This is the kind of book that provokes the reader to alternately laughing out loud, cheering, or weeping.

This is not a cheap blood and guts war story. It's a great tale of courage, leadership, brotherhood and humanity - Well told.

Great Book with the Comic Book Title

At first, I thought a book called "Battle Cry" might be fairly reminiscent of the comic strip, "Sgt. Rock and His Howling Commandos of Easy." In that, I was disappointed, which means I was very relieved.

This book is a surprisingly good war story of the 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine (Pogey Bait) Regiment. From the call to arms to their decimation on a Pacific Island invasion, you learn about the backgrounds of several of the marines in the Communications section of their battalion.

Uris demonstrates the knack for bringing characters to life where you feel their fears, hopes, dreams, and in this case, their intense esprit de corps.

I have a few qualifications for giving a five-star rating:

Do I still have the book?
Yes.
Would I ever pick it up, and read it again?
Yes.
Was I sorry that I came to the end of the book?
Yes.

I have only read two of Uris' books; I'm glad that this was one of them.

Of all economic textbooks I have encountered, this is the only one that explains clearly and precisely everything about world development, citing failed and successful examples in history. Stimulating Introduction

I read this book for my introductory economic development course and was engrossed by it. The chapter on population was particularly interesting, and caused me to pick up a few references from it. If you want to include a detailed mathematical treatment of growth theory, you may need to go beyond the text. However, the intuition and motivation for all topics covered by the book is strong. I found myself reading more than just the assigned chapters, and with excitement.

This is, of course, the only introduction I've had to the topic (besides more detail on growth theory in another course). Therefore, I have no idea if something is missing. However, if you want an engaging text, this is your book.

I found this little treatise very enlightening. I have always been prepared to slog at learning, so the remarks on counterintuition explained a lot of my own learning behavior to me, although I had never put the phenomenon into words. Mr Georgakis' ideas about self testing, learning, retesting at intervals and the avoidance of cramming might be seen as common sense, but people rarely put them into practice. It is possible to produce a weighty academic tome on this subject, but I am glad that he did not do so. By keeping his brief to a few well defined and quite revolutionary points he wrote a work that can examined in little time, tested, cross referenced and retested to be stored in our memories for our long term solid benefit.

This is a must-read book for every teacher, every student and everyone else involved with learning and education. Through research and convincing analysis, Angelos presents a very strong case about how learning is a slow and gradual process. The sooner we realise this, the better. He also provides suggestions on how we can learn how to learn. I work in the education sector and the book has provided me with a lot of clarity in my thoughts. Well presented, I only hope this book had more pages!

Quite out of date

First part of the book is pretty good. Second half of the book about listening to various international transmissions, is woefully out of date. This second edition is circa 1993. My advice would be to find a more recent text/

Informative and pleasant reading to enhance your radio listening hobby

This book is a must for anyone listening to shortwave radios or interested in becoming an amateur radio licensed individual. I've yet to finish reading this book because I'm enjoying everything in it from nostalgia to the ionospheric layers in the atmosphere above the earth that bounce signals back and around the planet.

Mr. Helms presents his materials in a smooth, easy to understand manner, that invites the reader to keep on turning the pages. I will eventually go back into this book to glean the frequency listings out of his carefully laid out paragraphs. He talks about antennas in a digestible way that makes the subject interesting as well as informative.

Early in 2013 I decided to study and take the Technician FCC test to become a 'HAM' radio operator and succeeded in this endeavor. Next I purchased a book titled 'The ARRL General Class License Manual' and began a long and sometimes memory splitting journey toward passing this next FCC test. I was simultaneous reading Mr. Helm's book and it not only cleared up many questions that arose about radio and radio propagation, but it also helped me answer test questions properly! I passed the General Class test missing only one question!

When I finish this book I'll come back here and add any pertinent thoughts that arise. If you are fascinated with radio and listening to the world in so called 'real time' I recommend you learn how to do it and get the most from the hobby. You will not regret it. I know we think of the internet as the most current form of information gathering that exists but think about it, how can the internet beat the immediacy of hearing live events as they happen?

Many considerations one needs to make when deciding to listen to the world via shortwave radio are covered in the book. This book helps the beginner in preparing to listen not only by explaining the operation of the radio frequency spectrum, but also with the mechanical aspects involved; including radio choices, antenna needs and seasonal as well as chronological listening periods. Things that most people haven't a clue about.

Again, when I do finish this book I will return to this review with a few more specifics that I feel will interest potential purchasers. Until then, happy shortwave listening.
