About the Author
BIOGRAPHY Norman E. Friedman, M. Ed. B.S. State University at Cortland M.A. Columbia University Norman E. Friedman has been caring for other people's children for more than 50 years. Trained as an educator, administrator, counselor, and mental health professional, his career has focused on the care and treatment of children and youth with serious emotional problems. He retired in June, 1999 from his position as Executive Director of Hawthorne Cedar Knolls of the Jewish Board of Family and Children’s Services of New York, a large residential treatment center and now is employed as a consultant by the A.M. Skier Insurance Agency in Hawley, Pennsylvania. Recognized for 25 years of service to children of Westchester County on June 30, 1998, the day was named in his honor. Honored by the Westchester County Task Force on Child Abuse and Neglect on April 18,1996, he received an award for his efforts to prevent physical and sexual abuse of children. For the past 20 years, he has consulted at schools, camps, day care centers, and other congregate care facilities throughout the United States when issues of physical or sexual abuse have become a concern. Well known as a national lecturer, Norman has taught as a guest lecturer at Westchester Community College and Fordham University School of Social Work. He has been quoted by the New York Times, Gannett Newspapers, The Washington Post, and The Mental Health Newsletter about issues of Inappropriate Intimate Behaviors relating to adults and children. His article, "Creating The Culture Of Safety" was published by the American Camping Association's Camping Magazine March/April 2001. Norman has presented workshops and seminars at many ACA Regional and National Conferences and visited more than 150 camps as a staff - training specialist. He serves as a member of the SAFETYunderwriter's staff at the A.M.Skier Agency. He is available to the A.M. Skier family of camp directors as a member of Camp-Alert-Network and A.M. Skier Partners. He has assisted in the development of the first of its kind in America, The Gene Ezersky Camp Safety College and serves as the Academic Dean. His book, “Inoculating Your Children Against Sexual Abuse: What every parent should know!” will be available beginning in June, 2006.

Don't spend the money on this book

While this book had a couple of good points, it is not worth the money and does not provide accurate, comprehensive information. First, I was sorely dissappointed that this book claims to be over 100 pages. In reality, once you remove the appendices and spanish translation, it is 27 pages - not worth the money! The advice could have been written in a 2 page article. The basic advice is to teach children all their body parts starting at age 18 months and then at age 5 teach them the "no touch zone". My husband and I just found out to our horror that one of his close friends he's known since childhood has been molesting and raping 4 and 6 year olds for at least two years. This means that teaching children starting at age 5 is too late!!!! He and his wife were in a neighborhood babysitting co-op - sharing babysitting responsibilities with other families so the the parents could have a night out once a week. Where his wife was during this, I don't know, but this news completely shook our reality and showed us that you can't trust anyone with your kids. The best advice offered by this author is that it's the parents' responsibility to protect their children. The second best piece of advice he gives is to tell your children that others should not ever have "secrets" with them. Now you know pretty much everything this book teaches. Do not let this book give you a false sense of security that it's ok to start teaching your children at age 5. I am not a trained phychiatrist, but neither is this author and it's not clear where he comes up with age 5 as being the appropriate time to teach "no touch". In 27 pages this author merely scratches the surface of the issues and clearly is not giving proper advice, in my humble opinion. In fact, I would really like my money back!!!

An amazing book for every parent

An amazing book for every parent. It's very concise, clear and gives actual steps parents can take to protect their children in a non-threatening and dialogue encouraging way. Even very young children. Rather than focusing on "good or bad" touches (because sexual abuse sometimes can feel very pleasurable), he talks about the "no touching zone" which is much clearer for kids to understand. It's a life changing book and I believe if every parent read this book, the amount of children getting abused would be cut down drastically. Because of this book my children will immediately tell anyone who isn't on their list that "You're not allowed to touch me there" and report it back to me right away. Even when getting innocently pushed on the swings. And I feel incredibly grateful for that!
