About the Author
John D. W. Watts (1921 – 2013) was President of the Baptist Theological Seminary, Ruschlikon, Switzerland, and served as Professor of Old Testament at that institution, at Fuller Theological Seminary, and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. His numerous publications include commentaries on Isaiah (2 volumes), Amos, and Obadiah.�He was Old Testament editor of the Word Biblical Commentary (1977 - 2011).

Still not my first choice

First, a confession and apology: My initial review of Watts' Isaiah commentaries ("Misses the Mark" - now deleted) was admittedly reactionary and somewhat ungracious. With apologies to Mr. Watts, let me attempt a more balanced and fair review.
Although I'm still hesitant to accept Watts' attribution of Isaiah to a fifth century anonymous author/redactor, I must admit that the idea of a post-exilic redactor is not wholly unreasonable. To his credit, Watts offers a theory that at least maintains the unity of Isaiah as a single book. He also anchors the central vision for the book in the prophecies of 8th century Isaiah (although he seems to minimize Isaiah as a primary source of most of the book's content, seeing the book as a response TO Isaiah more than a word FROM Isaiah).
I continue to find certain aspects of his approach troublesome: His organization of Isaiah into play form, with a variety of speakers inserted throughout the text still seems odd and speculative (although it must be conceded that identifying the "speaker" of a given passage in Isaiah is sometimes challeging); and his identification of Darius as the servant is unconvincing (Isa 53).
All in all, I'm still not sure I'd recommended Watts' commentaries, especially not as a first or only commentary. But, those who have some knowledge of Isaiah and its interpretation may find Watts helpful. It's still far from my favorite Word-series commentary, but it's okay

Interesting endeavor

The commentary on the first half (33 chapters) of Isaiah by John D.W. Watts presents a fresh perspective on the book of Isaiah. As a perusal of various commentaries on this well-known but enigmatic book indicate, scholars are all over the map when it comes to their understanding, not just of the date or dates of writing and the unity or multiplicity of authorship, but also on whether or not there is a common literary theme in the book. At one extreme are those who see the book of Isaiah as little more than a compilation of disjointed prophecies (whether by a single author or multiple authors). And at the other extreme are those who find a thematic unity in the book (again, whether as a result of single authorship or through the work of an editor weaving together texts from an Isaianic school). Watts clearly falls into the latter category, seeing the work (or at least the final product) as the result of a single author (or redactor) who lived somewhere in the late sixth century before Christ. As a result, according to Watt there is a unified theme and vision that underlies the entire book of Isaiah. In this way, Watts seemingly has the best of both possible worlds--unity of authorship (though not that of a pre-exilic prophet) and taking account of material (such as found in chapters 44-45) that seems to have been written after the exile.
Having said this, let me note what I consider the strong points of this commentary. First, although there is a significant amount of textual criticism, which will primarily be of interest to the serious scholar who has a working knowledge of Hebrew, it is also a very readable commentary and therefore accessible to the layperson. Second, Watts shows familiarity with the geographical, societal, and cultural background of not just Israel but of the other nations of the ancient Mideast. As a result, a significant amount of material in the text becomes illuminated in a way that would otherwise remain mysterious. Third, by stressing a unified theme, Watts is able to explain what might otherwise be seen as disparate and unconnected prophecies (using that word to mean "forth-telling" rather than "foretelling") in a way that deftly ties them together.
The weak points (and the reason why I do not consider this a five-star commentary) are these: First, although Watts does provide some introductory material, given the wide range of interpretations of Isaiah, it would have been helpful had he interacted with other interpretations in far more detail in order to show why he believes his own interpretation is preferable. Second, his interpretation is rather speculative, and while it presents a plausible interpretation, it is far from clear that it is the correct interpretation of Isaiah. And thus, finally, to the extent that this colors his understanding of specific passages, it is important to understand that in some cases at least his interpretation of these passages may be more a result of his overall approach to the book as a whole than anything that is clearly necessitated by the text.

Interesting Commentary

I agree mostly with the "Misses the Mark" review above.
Although I gave it 3 instead of 2 stars. I did this because if you overlook the shortcomings, this commentator did bring to life some scenes from Isaiah in a vibrant way. So many commentaries endlessly and fruitlessly go over scholar's theories about how the text was put together and then after all that say something like: But of course we just made up all this and really have no idea what really happened.
Unlike those, this commentary is a literary commentary. The writier's unique contribution is seeing Isaiah as a play with characters and acts and scenes. As I said I appreciated the life this brought to some of the passages but you have to overlook its shortcomings.
What are these shortcomings? Well, first of all since it is a play, with actors and speakers and such, the author, even when it is not specifically stated in the text, makes up who is speaking and who is doing what. This is very subjective and unreliable. To the author's credit, he admits this problem right up front. Another shortcoming is that to accomodate his theory, the author does away with its prophetic passages. That is, those portions of the text that have been traditionally thought of as forseeing future events, especially those in the end times, especially with regard to the Millenial Kingdom. Dispensationalists will find this particularly irksome and for good reason. This author, for the most part, treats the prophetic passages as "dreams" of God---what would and could have been if only men/Israel weren't/wasn't so rebellious, messing up all His plans.
This commentary is good for reading Isaiah. It is not good for its interpretation or its theology.
