About the Author

W. Larry Kenney, PhD, is a professor of physiologyand kinesiology at Pennsylvania State University in University Park, Pennsylvania. He received his PhD in physiology from Penn State in 1983. Working at Noll Laboratory, Kenney is currently researching the effects ofaging and elevated cholesterol on the control of blood flow in human skin and has been continuously funded by NIH since 1983. He has also studied the effects of heat, cold, and dehydration on various aspects of health, exercise, and athletic performance as well as the biophysics of heat exchange between humans and the environment. He is the author of some 200 papers, books, book chapters, and other publications.

Kenney served as president of the American College of Sports Medicine from 2003 to 2004. He is a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and of the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education and a member of the American Physiological Society.

For his service to the university and his field, Kenney has been awarded Penn State University’s Faculty Scholar Medal, the Evan G. and Helen G. Pattishall Distinguished Research Career Award, and the Pauline Schmitt Russell Distinguished Research Career Award. He was awarded the American College of Sports Medicine’s New Investigator Award in 1987 and the Citation Award in 2008.

Kenney has been a member of the editorial and advisory boards for several journals, including Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, Current Sports Medicine Reports (inaugural board member), Exercise and Sport Sciences Reviews, the Journal of Applied Physiology, Human Performance, Fitness Management, and ACSM’s Health & Fitness Journal (inaugural board member). He is also an active grant reviewer for the National Institutes of Health and many other organizations. He and his wife, Patti, have three children, all of whom are or were college athletes: Matt (Cornell football), Alex (Penn State football and track), and Lauren (Penn State track).

Jack H. Wilmore, PhD, is the Margie Gurley Seay Centennial professor emeritus in the department of kinesiology and health education at the University of Texas at Austin. He retired in 2003 from Texas A&M University as a distinguished professor in the department of health and kinesiology. From 1985 to 1997, Wilmore was the chair of the department of kinesiology and health education and the Margie Gurley Seay Endowed Centennial professor at the University of Texas at Austin. Prior to that, he served on the faculties at the University of Arizona, the University of California, and Ithaca College. Wilmore earned his PhD in physical education from the University of Oregon in 1966.

Wilmore has published 53 chapters, more than 320 peer-reviewed research papers, and 15 books on exercise physiology. He was one of five principal investigators for the Heritage Family Study, a large multicenter clinical trial investigating the possible genetic basis for the variability in the responses of physiological measures and risk factors for cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes to endurance exercise training. Wilmore’s research interests have included determining the role of exercise in the prevention and control of both obesity and coronary heart disease, determining the mechanisms accounting for alterations in physiological function with training and detraining, and factors limiting the performance of elite athletes.

A former president of the American College of Sports Medicine, Wilmore was the recipient of the American College of Sports Medicine’s Honor Award in 2006. In addition to serving as chair for many ACSM organizational committees, Wilmore served on the United States Olympic Committee’s Sports Medicine Council and chaired their Research Committee. He is currently a member of the American Physiological Society and a fellow and former president of the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education. Wilmore has served as a consultant for several professional sports teams, the California Highway Patrol, the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sport, NASA, and the U.S. Air Force. He has also served on several journal editorial boards.

In his free time, Wilmore enjoys Bible study, running, walking, and playing with his grandchildren. He and his wife, Dottie, have three daughters (Wendy, Kristi, and Melissa) and sons-in-law and seven grandchildren.

David L. Costill, PhD, is the emeritus John and Janice Fisher chair in exercise science at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. He established the Ball State University Human Performance Laboratory in 1966 and served as its director for over 32 years.

Costill has written and coauthored more than 425 publications over the course of his career, including 6 books and articles in both peer-reviewed and lay publications. He served as the original editor in chief of the International Journal of Sports Medicine for 12 years. Between 1971 and 1998, he averaged 25 U.S. and international lecture trips each year. He was president of the ACSM from 1976 to 1977, a member of its board of trustees for 12 years, and a recipient of ACSM Citation and Honor Awards. Many of his former students are now leaders in the field of exercise physiology.

Costill received his PhD in physical education and physiology from Ohio State University in 1965. He and his wife, Judy, have two daughters, Jill and Holly. In his leisure time, Costill is a private pilot, auto and experimental airplane builder, competitive masters swimmer, and ex-marathon runner.

Very informative

This book has very detailed chapters on all of the main subjects of exercise physiology. I bought it for my Kinesiology 491, senior-level class, and it is a great overview of everything I have learned over the years. Sure, some classes go into more detail about a handful of the subjects, but this will give the reader a great comprehension of the entirety of exercise physiology.

Slavery is a difficult concept to address with children, especially because many adults would prefer to forget that period of American history. In From Slave Ship to Freedom Road, award-winning author Julius Lester takes older children (and adults) on an intense, personal journey through the slave experience. As he gently explains the factual horrors of slave-ship conditions, auction blocks, plantation life, and the risks associated with escape, Lester consistently prods young readers with probing questions: "How would I feel if that happened to me?" "Would you risk going to jail to help someone you didn't know?" "You are free, but are you?" Lester also asks us to imagine the voices and feelings of the African Americans in the illustrations--another brilliant call for active participation.

Rod Brown's paintings are achingly vivid, so much so that a few may be too powerful for younger children. Certain depictions are difficult even for adults to bear: a lynched man with the bloody blows of a whip marking his back; slaves stacked seven-high in the hold of a ship, packed onto shelves with less room than the drawers of a morgue; and black bodies bobbing in the ocean. These are horrible images, but nonetheless historically accurate and important to remember. Brown took seven years to create these startling images, and his careful attention is reflected in the paintings' power and emotion. Grade 5 Up?Brown's 22 brilliant and dramatic paintings of slaves and slavery in America are the attention-riveting basis for this picture-book history. Lester's carefully crafted words are the threads that weave about the pictures, inviting readers, whether black or white, to "invest soul" and to reach "an understanding in the heart" of what Africans endured over the 250 years from the first slave ships to Emancipation. The illustrations, bright with color contrasts and skillfully composed, were previously shown in gallery exhibits. They are effectively displayed against glossy white pages. The portraits of men and women show statuesque, cleanly sculptured bodies, strong in their attitudes, whether laboring, filled with silent anger, or gathered in prayer. Many of the scenes so artfully portrayed are those depicting suffering, from the dreaded Middle Passage to field labor, the slave market, attempts to escape, and the cost in whippings and lynchings. Finally, in the last paintings, the Civil War and the joyful road to freedom mark the end of this darkest period in American history. Lester's words guide readers into the pictures, offering background facts, creating dialogue, or constructing the thoughts of the pictured persons. At intervals, the text breaks to suggest an "Imagination Exercise," or to question readers on how they would act or feel. This is a powerful book, and it is an important one. Beautiful book

Beautiful book. I felt like my 5th grade son's education on slavery was not fully addressing the scope of the atrocities. This was an eye opener for him and anything that helps to build compassion and awareness in my children gets 5 stars from me.

There's a lot going on here: a framework story, the historical account, the ending hypotheses, and the addition of "notebook pages" with background information; children may need to read the book more than once to take it all in. A great true life mystery

This is a wonderful book for children ages 7 - 12. The historical information is presented in an organized way that captivates one's imagination. The illustrations keep a child's interest and the notebook pages help the reader try to solve the mystery.

This book was amazing! Full of interesting clues about the never-answered questions, "What really happened? Who is to blame for George Howe's death? And where is the colony now?" Jane Yolen brilliantly tells the story about how George Howe died, shot with arrows while fishing for crabs, and how the colony Roanoke disappeared twice without a trace.

Pretty good account of the mystery of the Roanoke colony. Provides much more information than any textbooks I've seen. There are better books out there though, I'd keep searching if you're just starting to browse.

Economist Levitt and journalist Dubner capitalize on their megaselling Freakonomics with another effort to make the dismal science go gonzo. Freaky topics include the oldest profession (hookers charge less nowadays because the sexual revolution has produced so much free competition), money-hungry monkeys (yep, that involves prostitution, too) and the dunderheadedness of Al Gore. There's not much substance to the authors' project of applying economics to all of life. Their method is to notice some contrarian statistic (adult seat belts are as effective as child-safety seats in preventing car-crash fatalities in children older than two), turn it into economics by tacking on a perfunctory cost-benefit analysis (seat belts are cheaper and more convenient) and append a libertarian sermonette (governments tend to prefer the costly-and-cumbersome route). The point of these lessons is to bolster the economist's view of people as rational actors, altruism as an illusion and government regulation as a folly of unintended consequences. The intellectual content is pretty thin, but it's spiked with the crowd-pleasing provocations—'A pimp's services are considerably more valuable than a realtor's' —that spell bestseller. (Nov.)

As in Freakonomics, Dubner and Levitt consider how individual incentives influence strategic behavior and how, in turn, market behavior and changes in policy and culture help us to better understand incentives. Critics, however, diverged on the success of this follow-up while admitting the authors' wisdom, wit, and insight. Although the more diverse set of examples certainly fascinates, they can feel "like more of a rag-bag of conclusions" than a cohesive argument (Times). But what perplexed reviewers most was the last section, an analysis of externalities that examines the use of geoengineering to prevent climate change and provides fodder for climate-change deniers. Right or wrong, the use of geoengineering to prevent climate change seems a real stretch far beyond Levitt's economic expertise. Yet despite its flaws, SuperFreakonomics is as fun as, if even more controversial than, its predecessor.

The idea is to make you THINK!

I had to laugh as I read some of the negative reviews. Listen people, it's not intended to be a TEXTBOOK, nor is it written like one, thankfully. I've read both books. Super Freakonomics is a good exercise in critical thinking (something that is becoming sorely lacking in the age of American Idol, thanks to our putrid public schools and Playstation parenting); it makes you think about a lot of "truths" that we take for granted. For example, this book actually made me change some of my thinking about global warming. The book is super-interesting, and full of information that you'd be hard-pressed to find in your typical daily reading; and, it "sexes-up" the fields of microeconomics and behavioral economics. One of the points (relentlessly made) is how we (especially our governments) seem to prefer complex, costly solutions to problems, when cheaper, simpler solutions often exist, and the book does a great job of providing many examples of this. Is it a definitive tome on the many topics it covers? No - again, it's not a textbook, but it was definitely worth the time I spent reading it - I hated putting it down.

more of the same, which is great if you liked the first one

Superfreakonomics is the follow-up to the wildly successful Freakonomics, which I thoroughly enjoyed. This edition is more of the same. If you liked the first one, you'll like this one. If you didn't, then you probably won't. If you haven't read either, read the first one. This one is interesting, mostly, but the last chapter was a bit of a drag for me. There are some fascinating theories, statistics and illustrations. For the fans of their New York Times blog, however, there's not much that's new. The first book was a novelty, and a fascinating interdisciplinary one. This book is clearly a concerted effort, and it's enjoyable, but I recall random trivia and interesting points rather than the overarching themes. Did I enjoy it? Absolutely. Will I still talk about it at dinner parties in five years as I still talk about some of the theories in the first one? Well, I will reference one specific chapter.

In short, I loved it, although not quite as much as the first one.

A tired formula.

I gave a positive review to the first Freakonomics. That book distilled some 10 years of academic research by Mr. Levitt, and it was already stretched a bit thin. Levitt does not have another 10 years of research to convert into a second book, so instead we get a collection of magazine articles with cutesy "counterintuitive" angles to them. I know a popular book like this can't be expected to be completely rigorous, but what I've learned about Levitt since the first book has left me less willing to take him at face value. For example his famous study of the link between abortion and crime was later shown to suffer from a programming error in which he neglected to properly normalize a series of crime statistics. When the error was corrected, the trumpeted correlation went away. Levitt responded by re-jiggering his assumptions in a complicated way so he could keep his original conclusions intact. He certainly doesn't make his readers aware of how much subjectivity is in his analysis, and he gives short shrift to legitimate alternate interpretations. Without the penumbra of credibility Levitt enjoyed from his work in econometrics, he's just another moderately amusing magazine writer who shouldn't be taken too seriously.

Family, of course, is the big one, but with equal intensity she explores death and dying, the sea and its siren song, sex, shame, secrecy, unreliable memories, madness, "the drink," and--always in the shadows--England. That said, it's not like any other novel about the Irish that I've read. While recognizing that some readers may find the story lacking in plot, they applauded the depth and intensity of this "slow deconstruction of memory and self" (Los Angeles Times). Bleak and unsentimental, Veronica�€™s interior dialogues are nevertheless lyrical and clever. Though at times Enright may strain to encompass too much of the Irish experience, critics generally agreed that this dark, evocative novel was a worthy recipient of the 2007 Man Booker Prize.

All the gray of Ireland past

The appeal of this work by Enright is dependent entirely on the interests and disposition of the reader. It is thoughtful, layered, sincere and a great bore of a story. Should you be a fan of interior monologue, of extended ruminations and the self-reflections of a not particularly interesting woman, one who has been constrained by society? family? circumstance? her own lack of drive or energy or enthusiasm? from living, or even stepping, outside the lines, a woman who seems ready to convince herself that her failings stem from a sibling's secret molestation at the hands of a family friend many years earlier, then you will likely enjoy the read. It touches on sex and society and longing and restraint in Ireland from the 1960s through the end of the 20th century.

On the other hand, if you prefer the dynamism inherent in the work of so many other Irish writers, the call to emotion, to action, be it for or against, the willingness to explore and commit that colors the great characters, and plots, of Irish literature, you'd best avoid this "woe is me" snoozer. It's hard to imagine the workings of the Man Booker committee that considered this the best of 2007. Enright herself called the book "the intellectual equivalent of a Hollywood weepie," and, though "intellectual" is a bit self-serving, the "Hollywood weepie" is dead on..

Magnificent!!

This book is a masterpiece. Yes, as many reviewers noted, it is purely a literary piece. So if you are not up for that, it's not for you. Great swaths of the story erupt, in actuality, as long, magnificent poems. Poems of prose. Likely this would not have been the intent of the author, except secondarily, perhaps. But the writing is that good. It is incredible, evocative brilliance. Word smithing in its best light. Yes, the theme of a dysfunctional Irish family spanning the second half of the 20th century (with its rooted fate taking form in the first half) can be an over-worked and tired premise. But this story broke free of any such premise, and from every unintended theme. This is work of mining the soul, an exposition of the fabric of one person's past, pain, and makings. And the clever, persistent inability of memory, or perhaps truth-bearing, to serve us properly in the wake of trauma. Enright makes these revelations, through her main character, in raw, intimate, and inimitable strokes of language that are layered, gorgeous, metaphorical, and masterful. It's not so much about the story; it's about the language, the words, the ability to express deep, truthful, savory, layered human experience through poetic labors - that's what this book is. What a writer. Breathtaking. Bravo, Ms Enright... Bravo!!

This is not a comfortable book; it is an honest

At first I was very put off by the book because I was lost. I didn't know what had to do with what. But what made me stay with the book is the incredible power of the writing and the dark humor. There are lines in this book that almost make me cry because they are said so movingly. Once I realized what was going on (and I wish we knew a little earlier), then all hell broke lose in my head. This is not a comfortable book; it is an honest, accurate, very real book. The confusion of the narrator in terms of her own abuse was written by someone who obviously knew what she was writing about. A beautiful but sad book which I will remember a long time.

Family treatment in social work practice

As a lesbian I found this text to be offensive and homophobic in it's discussion of gay and lesbian couples and families. Throughout the chapter the authors refer to gays and lesbians as people who follow the "gay and lesbian lifestyle" as if it is a different way to live. The tone of this particular chapter is a "those people" approach as if we don't eat, sleep, think, worship and work like the vast population of people on this planet. In working with gay couples the authors suggest that "Same-sex couples simply do not fit into the heterosexual marriage model, and helping professionals will be well advised to assist gay couples in developing relationship styles that are personally satisfying"(p. 211). So developing a relationship style that is personally satisfying is not necessarily encouraged when working with heterosexuals? There is an abundance of heterosexist and homophobic ignorance that is promoted in this book. As a social worker and lesbian I write to tell my colleagues not to follow the dictates of this book especially when it comes to this chapter. I'm glad the book is so difficult to find.

Excellent text for Social Worker or Therapist!

It's easy to understand why this text is hard-to-find and in its third edition. It is an easy-to-read guide for the Social Worker or therapist both from a theoretical and practical perspective. In Part I the authors provide the theory of family practice using a systemic approach but with sensitivity to the individual needs of specific family settings. Part II covers hands-on practical interventions the practitioner may apply in almost any situation including topics such as single-parent families, sexual orientation, child abuse and violence, the elderly, mental health and chemical dependency issues, divorce and aftercare. It is significant that the authors have not overlooked the role that the agency plays in the Social Worker's treatment plan for families. Part III provides a concise and informative look at the agency's role including confidentiality and inter-connectedness of other service agencies. A must-read for any social worker and so well written that one does not get bogged down with discipline-specific language and terms. Well done Janzen & Harris!
