From Publishers Weekly
"Kennedy, a history professor at Yale, here assesses the interaction between economics and strategy over the past five centuries," reported PW , concluding that "the book is a vigorous entry in the debate over the extent to which national wealth should be used for military purposes."
Copyright 1988 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
Yale historian Kennedy surveys the ebb and flow of power among the major states of Europe from the 16th centurywhen Europe's preeminence first took shapethrough and beyond the present erawhen great power status is devolving again upon the extra-European states. Stressing the interrelationships among economic wealth, technological innovation, and the ability of states efficiently to tap their resources for prolonged military preparedness and warmaking, he notes that those states with the relatively greater ability to maintain a balance of military and economic strength assumed the lead. Kennedy never reduces the analysis to crude materialism or empty tautology. Stimulating, erudite, carefully crafted, and readable; for public and academic libraries. James B. Street, Santa Cruz P.L., Cal.

Review
`A brilliantly original book...It is intended for the intelligent layman as well as the academic historian, combining in Toynbee-esque manner the sweeping conception with careful attention to historical detail' Financial Times `This book is falling out of briefcases all over Washington DC, both because it looks and sounds erudite and because it purports to answer an increasingly common question: Has the United States already embarked on its journey into the sunset of empire? It is administering a lot of frissons to trend-watchers' Christopher Hitchens `Outstanding...He ranges across five centuries and around the whole world. He seems to have read every relevant book in every possible language. And he has produced a general argument so deceptively simple that no politician, however busy, should ignore or misunderstand it' Observer `One of the masterpieces of modern historical writing' Daily Telegraph `A masterpiece of exposition. It is erudite and elegantly written' New Society `A remarkable book...long, clever, often funny, and crammed with remarkable insights; it is tinged with the genius that unravels complexity' Evening Standard `Shows a master historian's ability to use evidence like a boxing champion's uppercut' TES `One of those rare (and irresistible) books which successfully combine the scope and sweep of `popular' history with the discriminating rigour of professional historiography, making it both a bloody good read and a thought-provoking one' Listener

How super powers go up and down over time
By Pomp t carney
The aurora does an excellent job of relating how the ups and downs of great world powers are inextricably related to the economies of the large countries. There can be no rise of a great military without that country first having a booming economy. It seems then that once a booming economy is achieved it is only a natural next step that the politicians start waving the war flag that necessitates the building of a military to complement the economic successes. It almost seems a required next step though that the politicians are never satisfied until they have spent the country back into poverty from whence they had come.so it seems that economic boom followed by a big military machine which gobbles up all that excess money and constantly demands more to fight another war is the BOOM--BUST narrative that most great powers have followed. No country can remain at constantly and not break the bank and put its people back in the chains of poverty..........and that is basically what this book taught me. .... Unfortunately, I don't think the American give tinkers damn or they would stop this madness in Washington. Ps you can look at the Spanish in the 16-17 centuries to verify this case.

Thanks

A book well worth reading
By GrouchyOldman
In this book, Paul Kennedy is searching for a pattern to explain "the rise and fall of great powers".He studies and reports on economic and military factors that accompanied or caused previously dominant nations to lose their Great Power status. He divides the (1987) world into 5 principle actors: the US, the European Union (England, France, Germany only), the Soviet Union, China, and Japan. He discusses their economic and military strengths and weaknesses, and likely affects on their Great Power status. NOTE: This book was published in 1987, before the fall of the Soviet Union, before the fall of the Berlin Wall, and before China achieved its major economic transformation by adopting (somewhat) free-market policies. Thus, one might think that this book is well past its shelf life. However, what Kennedy undertakes to do is not to report on the world as it is in 1987, but to describe historical trends far predating 1987 and ending with the state of the would-be claimants to great power status as of 1987, and to show the role of interlocking factors of economic and military strength in trying to attain or preserve Great Power status.

The march of folly:The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers
By Phyllis Antebi Ph.D
The "Rise and Fall of the Great Powers" is a book full of interesting thoughts. I preferred to read this book not from the beginning to the end, but rather, from the end to the beginning. This book is dense, full of facts and figures, but signifying something very relevant. Today's geopolitical landscape is much more fragmented than polarized as it was when Kennedy first published his book, 1988. Still our world leaders are facing a similar set of complex variables. These variables relate to the strength of our security requirements and the rising cost of expenditures which outpace domestic growth.
If you are interested in topics with far reaching global implications, I suggest you read at least the beginning and the end of Kennedy's 550 plus page thesis. I am reminded of Dorner's book, "The Logic of Failure". In it Dorner shows us how and why complex situations generate habits of thought which set failure in motion from the beginning. History seems to repeat itself. At least both Kennedy and Dorner agree on this!

By John D. Harris
The back-jacket summary drew me in and proved (unlike so many novels) to be an honest pitch: A story about a student writer who, somewhat by chance, locates the subject of his biographical (college class) project at a nearby nursing home. The biographical subject, a Vietnam War vet who was convicted of rape and murder 30 years earlier, is dying of cancer thereby introducing an added, looming deadline to finish the writing project. The writer begins with the weary task of documenting the life of a murderer but, through his research, revises his mission to that of uncovering the buried truth of the old murder.
This novel is probably classified as a thriller but I consider it a literary thriller. There's thrills and spills to make it a page turner but it doesn't over rely on such action. For me it was the rich character development, character interaction and psychological aspects that make this a great story and read. My only disappointment (albeit minor) is that the story never reveals if the class project (the biographical paper) was a success with the English professor and whether the student decided to become a journalist or professional writer. As a reader I was left to draw my own favorable conclusions for these minor questions.
I seek out debut novels as they tend to be more honest than the writing of more "experienced" writers who often seem to be lured off course by fame, fortune and laziness. This novel is genuine writing and I'm looking forward to this author's future work, hoping to find similar honesty. I'm recommending and/or gifting copies of this novel to all of my reading friends.

Fantastic debut mystery!
By col2910
It’s not particularly often that my wife reads and enjoys any of the books that cross my path. Whilst I endeavour to read what she reads (eventually) she doesn’t feel the same need to reciprocate, nor should she. Our last shared and loved book in common was Jess Walter’s Beautiful Ruins last year, until Eskens debut The Life We Bury fell into her hands after mine.

Fair to say we both loved it and it was fun checking in on her progress as she devoured it knowing what was in store.

A college assignment morphs into an investigation into a 30 year old murder mystery, that touches on a lot of things…..family, relationships, affection, abuse, parenting, autism, communication, guilt, loyalty, friendships, Vietnam, war, death, alcohol abuse, cancer……….and a whole lot of other things besides.

Great story line, superb characters that you care about, especially Joe and his neighbour Lila. I think the family dynamics and the evolving relationship between Joe and Lila and the part Jeremy unwittingly played was one of the most satisfying parts of the book. A close second to that would be the developing friendship between our murdering, cancer-stricken, veteran Carl and Joe.

I do like the odd book where the investigation into the mystery is conducted by a non-professional sleuth. It makes for a refreshing change from the police or more usually PI books, I read. Eskens arranged an interesting puzzle, which I was keen to see resolved, which it was.

Intriguing, entertaining, gripping and totally satisfying.

Definitely recommended if you like your mysteries, on the whole fairly straightforward, but with a lot of character and heart.

Debut author Eskens has two new fans in the UK!

Tense, engrossing and fast-paced reading--an excellent debut novel
By Si Dunn
Minnesota writer Allen Eskens' first novel is tense, engrossing and fast-paced reading--an excellent debut.

College student Joe Talbert has been given a seemingly simple writing assignment for an English class: Go interview and write a brief biography of a stranger. True to college life, Joe waits almost too long to begin working on the task. Then he hurries over to a nursing home, hoping to find someone interesting. The man he interviews, Carl Iverson, turns out to be a Vietnam War veteran who is dying of pancreatic cancer. Iverson, Joe learns, also is a convicted rapist and murderer who has been medically paroled to the nursing home to spend his final days. As Joe begins to dig deeper into Iverson's story, he starts turning up proof that Iverson was wrongly convicted three decades ago.

Meanwhile, Joe also has become attracted to his next-door neighbor, Lila. Soon, he pulls Lila into his investigation of Iverson, too. And together, they keep digging deeper, until they finally get themselves into ugly danger that seems to offer no possibility of escape.

No big spoilers here, but this mystery thriller's heart-thumping, nerve-jarring conclusion has more than one clock winding down to the final, deadly seconds. The Life We Bury is superb investigator fiction, with action.

(My thanks to Seventh Street for the review copy.)

Why Pride Matters More Than Money: The Power of the World's Greatest Motivational Force (Crown Business Briefings), by Jon R. Katzenbach

The book that turns our understanding of motivation on its head . . . and shows why most companies get it wrong.

There are few people with more experience and accumulated wisdom about the inner workings of business and how people can work together more effectively than Jon Katzenbach. His groundbreaking research has resulted in several important books, including The Wisdom of Teams and Real Change Leaders. Over the past several years he has turned his attention to one of the perennial questions of leaders everywhere: How do I motivate my employees?

Most everyone frets about how to devise schemes that will keep the troops revved up. Conventional wisdom—or at least the practice at most companies—often centers on money as the primary motivating force. Many also rely on intimidation, which like money generally has a short-term impact. But what Katzenbach has found in his research at many organizations is that both of these practices do little to build the long-term sustainability of an organization. For that you need a powerful force that has been—until this point—understood by few managers and implemented by fewer still: pride.

From the front lines to the executive suite, most people are motivated by feelings of accomplishment, approval, and camaraderie. It’s why the best employees strive well beyond performance levels that will yield them higher pay and why most true professionals relentlessly avoid retirement.

Why does Southwest Airlines consistently turn in the highest levels of performance and profitability of any company in the airline business? What can the U.S. Marines teach us about individual commitment that can be used in the for-profit world? How is General Motors overcoming its history of labor-management enmity through the efforts of “pride-builders” from both the union and the management side? By drawing on what he has learned from these and many other organizations, Jon Katzenbach provides a practical program for understanding the role of pride:

• Money is not the motivator most people think it is: Katzenbach shows why pay-for-performance programs by themselves result in employees who focus on self-serving behavior and skin-deep organizational commitment.
• Money tends to be a short-term motivational device and works best during times of growth, but pride works in bad times as well as good.
• Cultivating pride is an investment that yields high returns on workforce performance over time and is not nearly as costly as relying solely on monetary compensation and the turnover risks that accompany a “show me the money” culture.

Katzenbach shares unique insights and specifics about how the best mid-level pride-builders take advantage of the world’s greatest motivational force even in environments as challenging as General Motors and Aetna. He shows how managers at every level are missing a powerful lever if they are not instilling pride as a primary force for building their organization.

From Publishers Weekly
When people learn they're capable of much more than they thought possible, anticipatory pride becomes their driving motivational force, according to Katzenbach, the director of an eponymous consulting firm. The author of Peak Performance and The Wisdom of Teams gears his latest book towards companies and institutions wanting to inspire their employees, members or participants with primarily non-financial incentives (team spirit, camaraderie and excitement, for example). "Money by itself is likely to produce self-serving behavior and skin-deep organizational commitment rather than...institution-building behavior," Katzenbach asserts. Citing specific case studies, Katzenbach considers companies and institutions such as General Motors and its diverse management programs and the U.S. Marine Corps' emphasis on honor and courage. Employee recognition, he says, is a crucial element of any campaign to bolster group morale. A Microsoft employee, for example, likes to tell people that "we work on products that everyone is likely to use, and I mean everyone. More than one hundred million people use Office, my product. People will stop me in the middle of a conversation and say, 'You worked on that feature?' It's instant respect." The lure of monetary reward may always be a primary motivation for employees, but in clear and persuasive prose, Katzenbach cautions that because most of the rank and file cannot hope to compete with those at the top, other, less tangible motivations must propel group successes.

Living Your Values Will Motivate You More Than Added Money
By Donald Mitchell
The title of this book put me off. Why did I want to learn about how appealing to peoples' pride compared to paying them more?
When I got into the book, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that the subject is how living in accordance with your values is more motivational than being paid more. I would have read the book much sooner if I had realized that.
The basic point is that focusing on money as a motivational tool causes game-playing where the individual and the organization are pitted against one another. Where the organization and the individual see themselves as living the same values, constructive, mutually supportive behavior follows.
The book has an extensive discussion of what the author learned from his mother and from Marvin Davis, former head of McKinsey & Company. That part could have been a lot shorter.
I was intrigued to read in detail what the author feels is important about Marine training. Many books refer to Marines as having good values, but assume that the reader already has mastered the subject. I found the approach described here to be revealing and helpful.
Many who are stuck in organizations that are not doing well and have limited options will find the examples from General Motors to be valuable for seeing how the desire to do a good job can overcome many obstacles. Like a team that has had a good meeting of the minds at half-time, you can come back to take on all comers before the game is over. It's very fine material.
Unless you like to read lots of cases, how to implement the book's lessons is summarized nicely in an article-length epilogue beginning on page 181. If you already agree with the author's premise, you can start reading there and save a lot of time.
Where else in life are values important? How can you help bring them out in a positive way?

Good Advice for Motivating People in Difficult Environments
By Texas Techie
Every management book has to be considered in light of the need for consultants to avoid offending clients, so at first I had a hard time taking General Motors and Kentucky Fried Chicken seriously as examples of how to motivate workers. BUT...I gave Mr. Katzenbach his chance, and his insights were excellent.

The point of this book is to explain what will motivate people to do their best independent of money. Whether you are a greedy, power hungry executive or a benevolent business leader seeking the happiness of your employees, this book outlines the problems with and approaches to encouraging your workers to do their best. Paying more money isn't a viable option for front-line workers, but encouraging pride in a job well done, team spirit, and a winning tradition cost nothing but effort and sincerity.

As I said, at first it was difficult to understand how GMC could be held up as a role model, but I was missing the point. Mr. Katzenbach is trying to show how good leaders can motivate people even in difficult circumstances, so GMC turns out to be a great place to look for managers succeeding in spite of the environment. The same can be said for why Aetna was used as an example--a company in trouble where some people still moved forward by rallying their troops.

I have seen many of these principles attempted to be used by insincere and manipulative managers with disastrous results (e.g. dramatic downturns in employee morale due to cynicism). If you don't really, really care about your people, you might as well use a whip beause at least they will respect your honesty. I have been a consultant for many years, and take my word for it--executives do not fool the rank and file.

But if you are a leader interested in everyone's welfare, then this book may enlighten you as to what to do. What I particulary liked was the pragmatic orientation of how to make your department or division excel even if the company as a whole was mediocre. Of course, when everyone works hard and becomes hugely productive and successful, don't forget to reward them financially, too!

Fine Sentiment -- but not matched by the books contents
By Keith Appleyard
This was a strange book. I'd read Katzenbach's 'Wisdom of Teams' many years ago and really enjoyed it. But I didn't enjoy this book.
I wholeheartedly embrace the sentiments expressed on the flyleaf, such as "pride in one's work ... and in the sense of accomplishment, camaraderie and emotional attachment that comes with it is the key to success ..."
But what did I actually 'learn' from this book that I could take away and use, to change myself or to share with others? The answer is -- nothing. Contrary to the flyleaf, I found it neither "inspirational" nor "practical", just 'light'.
Maybe the 19-page Introduction should have served as a warning, but there was just no substance to the book. If a College Student had turned this in as a paper, then I would have accused them of stringing together a number of disparate stories, but never once did it actually come to any conclusion as to 'why', 'what' or 'how'?
It just relies on the innate 'sensibility' that "show me the money" isn't the answer, but it didn't explain to me what 'is' the answer.

I liked the hero better than the heroine
By Jen (Red Hot Books)
In this companion story to Seducing the Governess, investigator and former military assassin Gavin Briggs, is on the hunt for a missing heiress. Lady Christina is one of his employer's two long-lost granddaughters. He's been hired to bring her back to the old man in exchange for a sizeable sum of money. But Christina has other ideas. She is being blackmailed. Someone claims that her adopted brother isn't dead as everyone believed --and that there's information about him that could ruin her family. She plans to confront her blackmailer and find her brother before she'll even consider meeting the grandfather that cast out her mother years ago. Briggs agrees to help Christina in her mission; and she agrees to go with him when the task is done.

Christina seems to be everything Briggs despises in a woman. She is high-class and refuses to be docile. But as he gets to know her better, he sees that she is really fiery, loyal and down-to-earth. Slowly, he gives in to his desires for her... but never allows himself to dream of a future with her. He's haunted by the many deaths at his hands as a sniper. Not only that, but as a younger son, he'll never have a title to give the beautiful widow.

Christina had such a terrible marriage, she really had no idea what passion could be. Until she fell into bed with Briggs. It becomes quickly apparent that their feelings for each other are mutual. But it never really occurs to her that it could be more than an affair. I like it when a hero thinks himself beneath the heroine. Unfortunately, here, the heroine seems to agree (at least for a long time) --and that was a turn-off for me. Christina is all the great things Briggs thinks she is, but the fact that she dismisses him as a candidate for marriage so thoroughly made me disconnect from her and like her substantially less. It also didn't help that she considered reneging on her deal with Briggs more than once. Bad form! And Briggs needs the money that her grandfather promised him --to take care of his sister and her young child.

The passion and the sex were hot. And there was pretty good action... Although the particulars on the reveal of the villains were a bit murky for me at the end. I liked Christina's loyalty to her brother and I sympathized with her unfortunate history. But when all was said and done, I found her impetuous and selfish --and I didn't think she was worthy of Briggs.

You don't have to read Seducing the Governess to understand what's going on here, but I think I preferred that book to this one. 3 1/2 stars.

Great Hero, Meh Heroine~
By Karyn Gerrard
This is the second book in the two book miniseries about a aging Duke's 'lost' granddaughters, the first book was 'Seducing the Governess', which I did enjoy. It is in that book we are first introduced to Captain Gavin Briggs. I was intrigued by him then and was looking forward to his story.

Gavin is the epitome of a Regency hero, tall, handsome, capable in bed and out of it. Hiring himself out as an investigator, he is on the hunt for missing heiresses. Gavin needs the money and soon tracks down Lady Christina.
I will say right up front I didn't care for Lady Christina. To me she was a selfish, scheming minx. She is being blackmailed. Her brother is not really dead and she is also trying to hide information that could damage her family. She bats her eyes at Gavin and he soon agrees to assist her, in exchange for coming with him to her grandfather when it is all over.

So why didn't I care for Christina? She was too high in the in-step, and the trend of these fiery, outspoken historical heroines is starting to get on my nerves. Can't there be a happy balance of accurate demureness with a sprinkle of independence and outspokenness? Also, Christina took every opportunity to let Gavin know she was far above him. As with some other reviewers, it rankled.

Gavin on the other hand, is wonderful and the reason I gave this a higher rating than I was originally going to give it. He is so capable, rugged, honorable and sizzling hot. I loved his protective devotion to his sister.
The passion between the H/H worked, I just wish Gavin had been given a more worthy candidate for his affections and passions.

The action was solid and came to a satisfactory ending with a few twists and turns along the way. As for Christina, while I empathized somewhat with her horrid marriage and other aspects of her back story, she just didn't do it for me on any level. As for Gavin, Captain Briggs can swoop in and rescue me anytime, great hero!

3.5 out of 5, rounded up to 4 (thanks to Gavin!)

...I enjoyed its pace and the hero, as well as the mystery...

RRAH's THOUGHTS AND PONDERINGS:

The hero of this story is Captain Gavin Briggs, and we met him in a previous book of Ms. Maguire's, SEDUCING THE GOVERNESS. He is a battle-weary man and former military assassin, who now earns his money as an investigator, and his current job is to find a missing heiress and granddaughter of a Duke.

Lady Christina Fairhaven has always been aware that she was adopted, but that never stopped her from loving her adoptive family. Now that love is being put to the test by a blackmailer whose demands have become unbearable, so she decides to take matters into her own hands.

As Gavin brings Christina the news of her birth family, she is truly happy, but she knows that her adoptive brother needs her. She enlists Gavin to help her locate Lang, who everyone, but her, believes dead. Gavin, not having a choice in the matter as Christina will not agree to go with him until she locates Lang, gives in and agrees to help her.

It was interesting to watch a high society Lady fall for this hard-living Captain, especially because neither took their feelings seriously, at first. They both thought each other unsuitable for anything but an affair. However, as much as I loved the hero, try as I might, the heroine just left me cold. Only a handful of scenes have I thought her at least a bit warm (and most of those are the sensual ones).

In the end, BRAZEN was not a bad read. I enjoyed its pace and the hero, as well as the mystery, so I'll recommend it, but will probably give it away.

Melanie

Good Premise & Ending, Disappointing Characters
By weathered1
I've liked Diana Palmer's books in the past, and the synopsis of this one really appealed to me: woman in danger needs round the clock protection from the (sexy, alpha) man of her dreams. Between that and the great reviews, I was sold….and then I was disappointed.

Note: I need to delve into spoilers in order to fully explain my less than stellar rating, so from this point forward, there will be spoilers aplenty.

My biggest issue with this story is the so-called hero. Tony is a raging jerk to Millie. He starts off by verbally attacking her. He then finds out the information which prompted his attack was fabricated and, after a brief, unsatisfactory apology to Millie, proceeds to insult her repeatedly again, by targeting her "plain" appearance and telling her multiple time that he would never want her. He then all of a sudden decides she has a hot body and he does want her after all, leading to a hot and heavy encounter that she stops because she's not one for one night stands, and he proceeds to lose it. He rails at her, leveling asinine accusations at her, insulting and yelling at her. Then, it somehow gets even worse: on his way out the door of the bedroom, he gets a call from one of his friends with benefits. He purposefully stands in the doorway so that Millie can hear him as he uses his "seductive tone" and invites the woman to the suite. His plan? To hurt Millie as much as possible because she'll be able to hear every single thing he and the woman do. Does he ever apologize to Millie for that? Nope. I suppose the fact that, out of guilt, he puts a stop to things with the woman after kissing her a couple of times, is supposed to redeem him. It does not. For her part, Millie’s reaction to this is extremely rash and foolhardy to the point of being stupid, given the threat to her life.

In short, Tony goes from being hateful and cruel to her - even after being told early on that Millie had been in love with him for years - to all of a sudden being in love with her, though he doesn't say the words until the very end of the piece.

Then there’s Millie. I like how she knows exactly who she is: she has her values and principles and nothing (and no one) causes her to waver from, or compromise them. What’s odd is that for someone who has so much self-awareness, she doesn’t seem to have any self-respect or much in the way of common sense. Her stalker tells her once upon a time that Tony has said that he would have to be drunk to touch her, and she automatically believes him. Then, too, her stalker had set about trying to cost her her job and otherwise ruin her life, yet she still consented to see him, and after he beat her badly, she still didn’t press charges….because he had a little bit to drink and was crying afterward. Moreover, on all of the occasions when Tony hurts her deeply, angers and humiliates her, she feels those things momentarily and then *poof* they’re just gone, and she goes right back to adoring him.

(On another note, though I didn’t allow my personal feelings about this to impact my review, “librarian” is frequently used a pejorative throughout the story. Having been a librarian myself, I wasn’t a big fan of that, though I did appreciate how proud Millie is of having that job.)

There are some things to like about this story. When Tony isn’t disrespecting and insulting Millie, they actually have some intensive conversations and find surprising areas of common ground. I’d also say that the ending is sweet, in and of itself. When taken in conjunction with all that’s preceded it, though, it feels rushed and unearned. All things being equal, I think the entire story would have benefited from being longer, and including more bonding, much more of Tony attempting to make right all of the horrible things he’s said and done to her, and actually showing the lead up to mutual feelings and, thus, a more organic HEA. As it is, though, it’s sweet and loving – and it even has a little heat.

So I liked the premise and the ending (mostly), but the huge issues I had with the characters and their interaction made this a disappointing read.

Disappointing characters
By 2catlovers
This is another in a string of disappointing Diana Palmer books. In the first few paragraphs of the story, the author tells of how two of the characters, Tony and Frank, were aware of their deceased friend John's tendency to fabricate alternate views of reality when it suited him. It amazed me that right off the bat the hero, Tony, takes at face value all of the trash John had spewed about Millie, the naive heroine of the story, especially when he could have asked his friend Frank to verify some John's wild tales prior to John's death. Tony comes off as an over-bearing jerk and it takes much too long for him to believe the truth about Millie. I am again disappointed in DP's Millie...another mousy make-over, near-sighted, virginal, hapless heroine. The plot is so-so, no real surprises. I am tired of the you-should-be-thankful-for-my-attention-superior-specimen-of-mankind hero paired with the poor-me-victim heroine. Too much of a cookie-cutter/re-hash of previous DP's plots/characters.

Little Gem of a Classic Diana Palmer Story
By Sheila M
"She'd spent enough time eating her heart out over a man who couldn't even seen her."

FINAL DECISION: Short and sweet with a heroine who has been hurt but loves the hero longer than he knows, this story isn't particularly complicated but has some of the really best parts of a Diana Palmer novel.

THE STORY: Millie Evans, a librarian, has been in love with Tony Danzetta for years. When a childhood friend commits suicide, however, Tony blames Millie. What Tony doesn't know is that his friend stalked Millie and has sent a hit man to kill her. When he finds out, Tony, a special government agent, insists on protecting Millie. He doesn't expect that the sweet and innocent librarian will challenge his conceptions of his own life.

OPINION: I'm a fan of Diana Palmer. This book has all the traditional parts of a Diana Palmer novel: hero who acts like a jerk to the heroine based on a misunderstanding, a sweet and innocent heroine, some drama (here Millie is being hunted), and hero being a jerk which sends heroine running into danger. This book executes that story with some finesse. Even better, the jerky parts of the hero are shorter and therefore he is less of a jerk than some of Palmer's heroes. I really liked Millie and I thought the story was the perfect length for their story.

WORTH MENTIONING: This is a pretty clean story for those who are concerned with such.

CONNECTED BOOKS: SILENT NIGHT MAN is about a character from a secondary character from the Long, Tall Texans book, but this novella can be read as a standalone. I haven't read the book where Tony is introduced and it didn't interfere at all with my enjoyment of this story.

STAR RATING: I give this book 4 stars.
