John Ortberg is the senior pastor of Menlo Park Presbyterian Church (MPPC) in the San Francisco Bay Area. Book Study that transforms.

This has been a great Book Study to do. The way the information is compiled makes it so that the participant doesn't have to read in order to follow along with the lessons. I don't know why they wouldn't WANT to read, it's a great book and resource, but in those weeks when time gets away from us and a skim is necessary, the DVD pulls out all the main points and you leave feeling changed by its powerful message.

About the Author
David Kung is a Full Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington. He is also the Director of the Software Engineering Program and the Software Engineering Research Center. He received his BS in Mathematics from Beijing University, and his MS and PhD in Computer Science from the Norwegian Institute of Technology (now Norwegian University of Science and Technology), Trondheim, Norway. A great book for learning and practicing OOSE

This is the best OO software engineering book that I have read so far. I have been using Professor Kung's teaching materials to teach all my four software engineering courses for many years. Since they are easy to understand, my students have learned and followed many software engineering principles and methods covered in the materials to implement various projects in the courses. The courses have been evaluated four of the best courses in the department. I am so glad that, after many years, Dr. Kung has finally decided to publish this book along with the materials.

The book covers very practical and useful methods that are needed for software development. Different modeling methods are introduced in detail for developing different software systems (chapters 7 to 15). There are many great new features about the book. One of them is at the end of each chapter the author covers useful tools and methods for system modeling based on his substantial experiences in industry. Students should have no problem to pick up the tools and methods that have been used in industry immediately after graduation. Another great feature is the author uses simple but practical examples to explain how to use the methods covered in the book. For instance, a lot of examples are used to illustrate how to test OO systems (chapters 19 to 20), and how to apply design patterns (chapters 16 to 17) to save efforts in system design.

Because there are so many great features and topics in the book, I will recommend instructors to cover them in two or three semesters (courses). After learning the topics, students should become a well-trained software engineer.

A better subtitle would be 'A Long Winded Agile Unified Mythology'.

I'm all for agile processes but much of the research that is cited is garbage. One study cited and reprinted in the book reported a p-value of .48 :( . I don't know too many field where .48 margin-of error passes as reliable evidence. Most studies cited were questionably designed, used too few subjects to be reliable, yet the author uses them as premises and then builds arguments on them that are presented as fact. If you are a professor please read this book before assigning it to your class.

About the Author
Arseny Alexandrovich Tarkovsky was born in the Ukrainian city of Elisavetgrad (now Kirovohrad) in 1907 and moved to Moscow in 1923, working as a newspaper journalist and publishing his first poems. By the late 1930s, he had become a noted translator of Turkmen, Georgian, Armenian, Arabic, and other Asian poets. During the Second World War, he served as a war correspondent for the Soviet Army publication Battle Alarm from 1942 to 1944, receiving the Order of the Red Star for valor. Tarkovsky's first volume of his own poems, Before the Snow, emerged in 1962, when the poet was 55, and rapidly sold out. His fame widened when his son, the internationally-acclaimed filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky, included some of his father's poems in his films. He died in 1989, just before the Soviet Union fell.

Philip Metres is the author or translator of a number of books and chapbooks including SAND OPERA (Alice James Books, 2015), COMPLEAT CATALOGUE OF COMEDIC NOVELTIES: POETIC TEXTS OF LEV RUBINSTEIN (Ugly Duckling Presse, 2014), A Concordance of Leaves (Diode Press, 2013), abu ghraib arias (Flying Guillotine Press, 2011), TO SEE THE EARTH (Cleveland State University Poetry Center, 2008), and Behind the Lines: War Resistance Poetry on the American Homefront Since 1941 (University of Iowa Press, 2007). His work has garnered two NEA fellowships, the Thomas J. Watson Fellowship, five Ohio Arts Council Grants, the Beatrice Hawley Award, two Arab American Book Awards, the Cleveland Arts Prize, the Anne Halley Prize, the PEN/Heim Translation grant, a Russian Institute for Literary Translation grant, and the Creative Workforce Fellowship. He is a professor of English at John Carroll University in Cleveland.

Dimitri Psurtsev, a Russian poet and translator of British and American authors, is a professor at Moscow State Linguistic University and lives outside Moscow with his wife Natalia and daughter Anna. His two books of poetry, Ex Roma Tertia and Tengiz Notepad, were published in 2001 by Yelena Pakhomova Press and translations of his poems were published by the Hudson Review in 2009 and 2011. In 2014 Dimitri received, along with Philip Metres, a PEN/Heim Translation Fund grant for I BURNED AT THE FEAST: SELECTED POEMS OF ARSENY TARKOVSKY.

Excellent anthology of poems by one of Russia's finest (and arguably most underrated) poets!

Historically, Arseny Tarkovsky's poems have had limited exposure in the English language. Though widely known and highly regarded as a great poet in Russia and the former Soviet Union, he is less well-known in the West. His work, nostalgic, spiritual, emotional, and deeply moving, arguably deserves greater exposure in the English-speaking world. This new anthology of selected poems, translated by Philip Metres and Dimitri Psurtsev, not only fills that need but surpasses it with this fantastic and accessible bilingual volume of Tarkovsky's poetry. The translations, which capture the feeling, essence, rhythm, and depth of Tarkovsky's words as best English can, are superb and it is a great treat to see them side-by-side with the original Russian-language texts. The collection is complemented by an excellent afterward by Metres on translating. Overall, it is truly a work jam-packed with so many beautiful words and so much excellent material that it astounds one to think that it is only just over 200 pages long! It is certainly a must-have addition to the library of any serious Slavicist or scholar of Russian poetry.

I do not have enough superlatives for this book

Obsessive-compulsive? This book's got you covered. Codependent? This book's got you covered. Narcissistic? This book's got you covered. Histrionic? You see where this is going.

But it's not a collection like the DSM. It's a unified theory. This book was the culmination of Horney's life work, after treating all different kinds of patients in her practice and noticing the common threads.

There is no way to do these ideas justice in a review. I'll go ahead and try, but I insist that this is one you really have to read.

The basic idea is that we go astray when we start imagining that we're something we're not instead of seeing ourselves as we are. We do this in order to cope with the loneliness of feeling excluded as a young child, which itself is a product of not being able to connect with people because we're too afraid of people, which itself is a product of overwhelming negative experiences involving people in early childhood. But once we develop this fantasy image of ourselves, that's when life takes a dramatically wrong turn. Our attention, which for a normal kid would go into people and things resulting in a healthy and rich personality, gets poured into this image. The more we invest in it the more important it becomes to us and the more attention we give it.

Since the image, which could be anything from being uniquely beautiful, uniquely intelligent, uniquely good, or uniquely significant in any other way, is basically unreal, it is constantly brushing against hard reality. So, for example, a smart boy who goes down this course will probably develop an image involving intelligence. He probably has a lot of gifts, which in more favorable circumstances he would have found constructive ways to use. Instead, he builds his initial successes into a massive pride system in which he considers himself a rare genius. He might perhaps entertain fantasies that he has a unique sort of brain. Because he does this in lieu of putting forth effort in the world of reality, his achievements begin to lag behind. Since reality has a way of making itself noticed, he must retreat even further into fantasy in order to keep his bubble intact. By the time he reaches adulthood, this very intelligent young man will have achieved significantly less in tangible reality than his peers of similar intelligence, and so to keep his bubble intact must constantly invent new reasons he is the way he is (perhaps he is a unique, misunderstood visionary for whom ordinary achievements don't mean much).

But all this reinforcement doesn't make the system any stronger. It in fact just gives it more weak points, more ways reality can show him what he really is and really has achieved. And such weak points mean anxiety. So, early on as a kid, defense mechanisms begin to kick in. He moves toward people, submitting himself to somebody he decides is great or powerful. Or he moves against people, declaring himself a warrior and professing a law of the jungle. Or he moves away from people into aloofness. These defense mechanisms in turn become part of the system, part of the idealized image, and thus become invested with pride. Thus the self-effacing one fancies himself a saint or a great lover. The expansive one fancies himself a knight in shining armor. The aloof one fancies himself a sage on a mountaintop.

And so the construction of this monstrosity continues. Naturally all the unreality involved has consequences. Depending on the specific structure of the individual's system, these consequences manifest in different ways, ways which strikingly correspond to many modern psychiatric diagnoses. A self-effacing person is more likely to be a codependent. An expansive person is more likely to be a narcissist or an antisocial. A resigned person is more likely to be a schizoid.

The person has to work very hard to keep up his image and avoid exposing all the weak points to himself and to others. So he develops an overactive pseudo-conscience which imposes a tyranny on him and beats him down whenever he becomes too aware of the discrepancy between his fantasy image and the reality of himself.

Further, all the anxieties and defeats which of course must happen in the course of life and especially in this kind of life, must be dealt with too. This can result, for example, in destructively hedonistic behavior such as substance abuse problems.

Finally, Horney's message is one of hope. The form of therapy she describes has the aim of untangling all these knots the patient has built up over time, until he reaches his true needs that were buried for so long and develops some genuine strength. Anybody can go down this road; the only requirement is that they want to. So Horney even regards those we would consider narcissists and sociopaths to be fundamentally reachable and reformable, if only they decide they don't want to be that anymore.

This book is out of this world. There is no way I did her theory justice in this review. Horney's experience and compassion show in her writing, and her arguments are cogent and concise. You have to read this book.

I still don't understand why this woman does not have the place in history she deserves. Why did we retreat from learning about people's real issues into band-aiding all the symptoms with medications? Why do we have a million different diagnoses and pretend that they're all totally separate, without recognizing what so many of these mental illnesses have in common at their roots?

Did she hit too close to home for too many people? Can Horney's lack of recognition really be that simple? If so, that suggests that the cure for the ills of our world really rests in our attitude toward the truth.

I don't think I've read a more detailed and comprehensive book on neurosis. Neurosis was basically considered an exaggerated version of otherwise healthy behavior/thinking. I say "was" because I believe the term neurosis may not be used anymore in the same way by the psychiatric community. Karen Horney does an excellent job of describing and connecting the many many components of this disorder.

There are no real solutions to speak of in the book. It doesn't appear to be a traditional self-help book. It reads more as reference.

If you're looking to use it for self-help, I'd recommend reading it in conjunction with "The Pathwork Lectures". They are their own unique body of work and are more solution-oriented.

A moving debut

I'll keep it short and sweet. Three things make this book stand out from other short story collections:
a) It is written incredibly well. The stories flow effortlessly, are written with excellent imagery and figurative language, and invoke everything from heartache to nausea.
b) It is one of those books that you could read one time for enjoyment... or you could read it three times and dig up all the many meanings.
c) This is not your Nora Roberts soap opera. Anybody can use sex and violence to make a book captivating, but it takes a master to weave a beautiful story from something more simple. Without becoming boring, Doerr masters this.
Read it, love it, and tell your friends to do the same.

The Role of Mystery in Fiction

If you were to tell me that The Shell Collector features mostly stories about people who find majesty, wonder, awe, and rejuvenation through the Mystery of Nature, I would roll my eyes and dismiss the story collection as a precious sentimental meditation on the natural world worthy of a Hallmark Card. However, the aforementioned themes are rendered with expertise, vigor, and indeed pure poetic prose so that even a cynic like myself was able to surrender to Doerr's magical stories. Here are some highlights:

1. The Shell Collector: A scientist who collects shells lives like a hermit in a isolated coastal land in Kenya where he discovers an elixir, derived from a sea snail, which forces him to contemplate the manner in which civilization usurps all of nature's wonders for its commercial purposes.

2. The Hunter's Wife: A man takes his wife into the barren wilderness where she eventually leaves him to pursue a career as a celebrity New Age figure.

3. The Caretaker: An African refugee who has seen unspeakable evil during civil war and has been coerced into doing something that violates his conscience moves to an ocean house in Oregon where he learns, through the help of a young woman, to find his redemption.

4. Mkondo: A white fossil hunter goes to Tanzania where he becomes obsessed with a young African woman whom he marries and takes back to Ohio. There the woman languishes in despair until she finds her vocation in photography, which brings her closer to nature.

Over and over again, Doerr pits the vulgarity and soul-sapping forces of civilization with the pure spiritual powers of nature as his characters attempt to straddle both worlds.

For a thematic companion to Doerr's stories, you might want to look into the 1971 film masterpiece, set in Australia, called The Walkabout, which wonderfully is now available on DVD.

How he is able to convey with such clarity the terrain and atmosphere of Liberia, Finland, Bavaria, Ohio etc may be credited to his own travels, but I think it is more a credit to his gifts of creating backdrops for his dramas. The young man is so in tune with nature that in a few words he is able to descibe the advent of spring, the caustic stillness of winter, the miracles of ocean life and seeds becoming plants as well as the domain of butterflies. His characters are driven in a synchronicity with natural forces to the extent that at times we are left to ponder whether the human with a name is more the main character than the land wherein he dwells.
Another aspect of the excitement these stories generate lies in the incredible tales themselves. There are no usual rehashs of familiar prototypes: each story is a cosmos rarely explored. Combine the magic of his limitless imagination with the glory of his writing skills and see if you don't agree that this is a Major New Voice in American literature. One waits for an extended novel without any concomittent fear that he will be able to produce it. Bravo!

Helpful book for training technologists. The pictures are clear and easy to understand. The text/pictures make it easy to show the difference between properly and improperly scanned exams. Quality and positioning have improved significantly. Inexpensive for a medical text. I would highly recommend these books.

Not the Same As Hayes Manual, Adds to the Library

MGB Automotive Repair Manual: All Models of the MGB Roadster and GT Coupe With 1798 CC (110 cu in Engine) (Haynes Manuals) by John Haynes is still the world-class best.

This book is bigger, heavier, more white space, larger print, better diagrams and illustrations, and for all those reasons, it adds to the library.

The "Driver's Handbook" is 22 pages of really basic stuff, while the special tuning manual appears to be more or less a restatement of the calibration data for the car.

If I could only afford to buy one book, I would not buy this, and would go instead with the Haynes Manual. If money is not an issue, I would buy this book fourth in line, after Haynes, "The MGB Restoration Manual" by Porter which dramatically enhances Haynes on points of restoration, and "Original MGB C-V8 Compl: The Complete Guide to All Roadster and GT Models (Original Series)" by Anders Ditlev Clausager which is a dramatic color photo compilation of what perfect looks like.

The ultimate for the MGB owner!

This is the Bible for the MGB owner! And yes, you need to think British to read this manual! But you get the owner's manual, repair info, and the special tuning manual! What is truly amazing is that this book is still available 20+ years after the last MGB was produced! God bless the MGB owner!!!

Given a few less than stellar reviews, I feel that as a long-time owner driver of a couple of 1972 MGs (1 Roadster & 1 MGB/GT) I need to add a comment or two. I stand by my review that the 1975 edition of this manual was, and still is one of the best MGB manuals ever written. The later Haynes manual is indeed a fine manual. I also own the Haynes manual; and it could be considered a "better value" depending on the year of your MGB.

Having held all the major parts and fasteners of many cars in my hands over the years I still do not claim to be an expert, just a diehard MGB guy.

Yes, this manual is now a bit pricey, and since it was first published an abundance of later manuals have come out, as well as free online wiring diagrams, excellent MGB forums and youtube videos.

As a "new" MGB owner you do not absolutely "need" this manual given the current sources and resources available and offered via the internet.

I've owned a few MGBs since the 1970s; I have no regrets whatsoever of any purchases I made to educate myself about the marque.

If you own and maintain an MGB you have my utmost admiration.

Invaluable!

However, this book was much more useful than the standard auto repair book I had. You'll need a translator if you don't speak British. Also an interesting bit of history. The book contains all the text of 3 official publications, the owners manual, the factory repair manual, and the "special tuning" manual.

I liked this book...it was short, steamy and very heat warming. the majority of the book takes place all in one night. but it is not so short a read that you get upset by it. two lovers reunite after a break up bcus he is a dom and afraid that Liv can not handle it. He does not understand at 1st what it is that he wants to do to her so he leaves. they meet again on a drunk night out with girlfriends and its on from there...Great read..sex was off the pages....

Wow, very hot and very well developed. Michael and Olivia's story was really good. Poor Micheal thought he was a deviant because it turned him on to be a Dom. Luckily, fate puts an old flame back in his sights and he gets to show her who he was along and how much he loved her. Good book and I would definitely recommend it!

Wish I Had This Years Ago!

After reading 'Data Analysis and Business Modeling with Excel 2013', I must say that I enjoyed the organization of this publication. Although I've been an advanced Business Intelligence user for a few years, I still found a few tips that David makes mention of to be very helpful. For anyone considering purchasing this book, I would recommend it for Business and Financial Analysts that work specifically with messy data (specifically for strings and dates). David's examples provide great application of how to quickly clean up large blocs of irregular data and run parallel functions alongside data sets for efficient computation. My only hesitation for not rating 5 stars is that PowerPivot and Power Query are not discussed in this particular text, but I do encourage the author to considers they be included in the next publication... David, I'll be happy to assist if you decide to pursue this.

Nevertheless if you're an Financial or Business Analyst, Data Scientist, or Student looking to take your data skills in Excel to the next level, this is the kind of book that I wish I had years ago. Upon reading, you'll pick up importing with multiple flat file sources quickly as well as blending some basic skills with Microsoft SQL Server tables (very common for large organizations that use Windows exclusively). This book also explores Pivot Tables, Charting, dynamic slicing of data sets, and a bit of VBA macros as well. I for one plan on giving this book to a friend who I know is just beginning to use Excel for more than the standard 'A1 + B1 = C1' formulas. Overall, I think that this is a very valuable resource for many Data Analysts out there and it's written by one of us! Well done, Mr. Rojas!
