Alpha Big Time is a solo book for a new character that debuted in Spider Man. While it is nice to get new characters, this one does little to stand out from the pack. There is room for growth, if they decided to do more.

Collects Alpha: Big Time issues #1-5

The character Alpha debuted in Amazing Spider-Man issue #692. Much like Peter Parker, this teenage boy received his powers from a science accident. Spider-Man became a mentor to him, but it appeared that he lost his powers and that his hero's journey had come to an end.

However, it seems that his journey had only just begun because the Superior Spider-Man helps him get his powers back in this volume. Alpha's power-set is huge. Reminiscent of Superman, Alpha can do basically anything. In this volume he starts to make a new life for himself in a new city. Even though this isn't an origin story, it definitely feels like the hero's true beginning.

I liked this collection more than I thought I would. A lot more. I would have liked to have read more in this series, but it was cancelled after only 5 issues.

Clearly written and published! So thankful this is a Print Replica version

We used this book for our Neuro class in graduate school and we are currently using it again in medical school. The explanations are clearly written and the images are very helpful. I also LOVE that they chose to use the Print Replica format!! This is the only way that text books should be offered on Kindle, especially science books. The images are often complex and this format preserves their clarity. Well done!

Good if you already know your Neuro. Excellent reference, not for beginner learning.

I'm a UCSF Dental student. We're going through our Neurology II block currently and all the professors that teach Neuro highly recommended buying the book (what student buys books these days when they're all on PDF...). They said things like "oh its so good and concise and easy to read and has all the necessary information and you'll be using it forever..." Not the case

If you already know your Neuro decently well (which I thankfully do), this book is great as it definitely refreshes your memory quick and builds upon what you know. It does a good job at giving you the bigger picture. If you're a beginner to the world of Neuro, I urge you to stay away from this book as it is very much written in the language of Neurology rather than in a way to teach a beginner.

For what we're using it for, its in complete excess. That being said, it will be a book I keep on my very VERY small shelf of books. The information inside is not stuff that can be easily and accurately found on the internet (or wiki). If I need to look something up such as a condition or a mechanism, its excellent. It may even spark my interest to learn more about certain topics.

Bottom line:
this is not a very good 'teaching' book as it is a very dense read and heavily based in the language of Neurology. its a book for those that already know general Neurology. Highly informative and well written. A VERY good reference book as it DEFINITELY contains "Essential Neuroscience" knowledge that any MD/DDS/OMFS should have an idea about.

A priest with Juan Batista de Anza's expedition in 1776 named a wild creek where the group camped after St. Joseph of Cupertino, Italy. A village known as Westside adopted the name in 1904 as it grew up by that stream, now Stevens Creek, near the road that is now De Anza Boulevard. Like its Italian namesake, Cupertino once had wineries, and vineyards striped its foothills and flatlands. Later vast orchards created an annual blizzard of spring blossoms, earning it the name Valley of Heart's Delight. The railroad came to carry those crops to market, and the electric trolley extended to connect Cupertino's first housing tract, Monte Vista. When the postwar building boom came, Cupertino preserved its independence through incorporation, but that bold move would not stop the wave of modernization that would soon roll over the valley.

Author Mary Lou Lyon taught high-school history in Cupertino for 31 years and now teaches California history to seniors and writes newsletters for the Santa Clara County Pioneers and the San Francisco Westerners. Adding knowledge and personal experience to enhance selections from the photographic archives of the Cupertino Historical Museum, she traces the history of Cupertino to the brink of the modern age in 1960.

Disappointing and poorly edited

Having lived in or near Cupertino for many years, I thought it might be interesting to learn something of its history. I found this book at my local library, and it seemed a good starting point, since it was light on content and had lots of photos. Unfortunately, it was a bit of a disappointment.

"Early Cupertino," as with the other books in this series, is almost entirely made up of photos and captions. There's very little history described beyond a brief introduction, with bits and pieces given in photo captions throughout. A lot of the information in the captions also seemed to assume that you already knew something about Cupertino's history. They referenced various people and historical events for which no other information had been given.

There were also a lot of problems with the content, most of which seemed to be due to poor editing. An aerial photo of Cupertino had a caption about the first library. The caption for a photo of an orchard referenced a horse that isn't visible anywhere. There was also a note attached to the cover about some incorrectly identified people in a family photo.

If you're looking for lots of historical photos of Cupertino, this might be a good place to start. But if you want some useful and well-prepared information about Cupertino's history, then you will probably be as disappointed as I was.

About the Author
Robert A. Dobie, MD, is clinical professor of otolaryngology at both the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) and the University of California, Davis, as well as partner in Dobie Associates, providing consultation in hearing, balance, hearing conservation, and ear disorders. After medical school and residency training at Stanford University, Dr. Dobie completed fellowships in auditory physiology and otoneurosurgery. His previous positions included professor at the University of Washington, department chair at UTHSCA and director of extramural research at the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, National Institutes of Health. He is past president of the Association for Research in Otolaryngology, past chair of the Hearing and Equilibrium Committee of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, and has served on the boards and councils of many other professional organizations and scholarly journals. Dr. Dobie’s research interests include age-related and noise-induced hearing loss, hearing conservation, and tinnitus, and he is the author of more than 200 publications.

I have worked as an audiologist for 37 years with 25 of those years devoted full-time to hearing loss prevention. Robert Dobie’s “Medical-Legal Evaluation of Hearing Loss”, beginning with the First Edition, has been a practical and essential reference text on my desk. As I began providing consultation services within my private practice, I was extremely pleased to learn of the release of the Third Edition. This version provides an updated view into many emerging issues related to occupational hearing loss, diagnostics, recreational hearing loss, forensic audiology, etc. Dr. Dobie’s inclusion of the 2013 revision of ISO-1999 is an especially useful update. Although one can find various sources of information scattered around the Internet, it is extremely helpful to have a consolidated and authoritative source that brings together all aspects of this very complex subject. I highly recommend it for anyone involved in workers’ compensation, disability determination, or forensic activities related to hearing loss.

Grade 1–4—Much surface and little substance mark this collaboration from Gosline and Bossi—but oh, what a beautiful surface it is. As the rhyming text extols the virtues of trees and describes the planting and growth of a group of seeds, the jewel-toned illustrations of the natural world immediately draw the eye. The elevated language tends more to poetry than sense: "Warm wishes sowed the greening land/and flocking birds rejoiced the stand/and sang a story that uplifts,/the tale of ten trees' simple gifts." The text then introduces these trees, each chosen to represent a particular characteristic (seemingly at random, for the afterword describing the various species gives no hint as to why they were assigned their titles). The blue spruce represents tolerance, the yellow poplar stands for love, and so on. A listing of state trees is appended. This has quickly become my favorite book. THe story almost brings me to tears and the illustrations are wonderful. I want the illustrations for my walls. It is nice to find a book that you can read over and over, but also feels great to give as a gift to everyone on your list. THis is a must have!

Substance, eloquence and utterly magical beauty

This book caught my eye at a pediatric center last year, and I recently succeeded in tracking it down. What an amazing find!

Fist of all the illustration is exquisite, magically emulating the purity and joy inherent in young children. Images are soothing and uplifting, as is the message. The first line in the book, "Everything good begins with me" is a compelling symbol for all that follows. In fact, contrary to what one reviewer wrote, this book is rich with substance and meaning.

What greater message can we hope to instill within our children than "everything good begins with me"? This is the vital yet seldom exemplified, grown-up concept of "accountability", bundled into a simple phrase any child can understand. While the imagery captivates, related messages of courage, hope, honesty, love, and gratitude effortlessly filter into the reader's consciousness.

I'm ecstatic to have discovered this book and to share its beauty and eloquence with my children. In fact I purchased additional copies for friends, family and teachers. Do yourself a favor and get your hands on this book. It's one you'll want to treasure and pass on for generations.

Be happy....plant a tree

The opening line is perfect, "Everything good begins with me." A tiny acorn tumbles to the ground and issues this statement to its mother tree. Then his adventure begins. He snuggles deep into a cloak of golden leaves, takes a long winter's nap and emerges in the warm Springtime wide awake, ready to sprout and stand tall amidst his prestigious elders.

Beautiful illustrations of different types of trees appear in the following pages and each one gives an account of his value, worth and contributions to his surrounding world. The trees are characterized by words such as hope, love, courage, gratitude, peace, compassion, tolerance, generosity, honesty, and happiness. They model to the human reader the exact attributes humans need to make their world a more loving and better place to inhabit. The world will then be a thriving and healthy community with everyone and everything living together in harmony and peace and doing their share to make the planet the best it can be.

The book is written in rhyme and the message is positive and inspirational. The illustrations are magical and bring the text alive. The journey from a tiny seed to a luscious, thriving forest encourages us to look after our world so our children can stand in the midst of "life" and know as they grow up they will need to become good stewards of their earth, as one day they will be passing it on to their children's and their children's children.......and so goes forth the circle of life with everyone having a part to play to keep it going.

About the Author

Dr Jenny O'Dea has been an Associate Editor for Health Education Research (Oxford University Press) for several years. She has a Masters in Public Health from the University of California, Berkeley and a PhD in Medicine from the University of Sydney in which she focused on the improvement of body image among young adolescents. Recent research from Dr O'Dea's group of collaborative researchers and students includes a 3-year national Australian Research Council study titled "Youth cultures of eating" and a 5-year study of children's growth, weight, health and participation in physical activity. The results of these two large, national studies add to the research about childhood obesity and the important role of nutrition educators, health professionals, teachers, parents and the media in the promotion of healthy eating and physical activity among young people.

A comprehensive guide to practitioner

This book is an invaluable reference to all those in the internal auditing field, especially for all those who are now managing an internal audit function. The internal audit has been evloving constantly over the past 20 years to become more and more suitable for the modern business, with increasing focus on business strategy, consultation, control system designs and implementaion etc. This book is a very timely addition to the profession, given the increasing awareness of the need for internal control as required by the new legislation (i.e. Sarbanes-Oxley Act 2002). A wealth of information is packed inside with lots of flowcharts and graphical presentations, which make the readers all the way easy to understand and able to grasp the author's core concepts. There are many useful suggestions as well. Practicability has always been a subject of debate for an internal audit function and this book is no less to clear the myths about it. The relationship between internal and external auditors is also covered in depth. I am particularly interested in two of the chapters on behavioural aspects and marketing of auditing services. They show how the author assimilated his experiences with theory. The content on auditing over information technology including techniques and relationship with business operations demonstrated the book's comprehensiveness as ever as it could be. The subject is a niche and nobody wants to be checked and balanced. But you'd find advices on how to reconciliate the differences between the businesses and controls. This makes even more valuable to all those managers who are at the operational frontline realize how important to carry out their daily supervisions with sufficient controls. Overall, a highly recommended item.
