Review of Clinical Trials: A practical approach

I found this book almost 15 years ago when first designing a series of clinical trials for cytomegaovirus prevention in organ transplantation. It is a very practical "how to" volume, extremely well written and concise. I recommend this to all clinical investigators who are starting out, and for all trainees. I have been waiting for his revised edition for over a decade and only hope he will update this great book.

Quick, light, relaxing read

I read the Kindle version. I'm a fan of Karl, and have read all his books at some point. If you're read his others, you know that he basically just describes the events that happen in his shows, with a little more perspective, and some anecdotes thrown in. This is no different. I have a broken leg right now, and reading this was a great de-stressor. Highly recommended for a light and relaxing read. I finished it in a couple of reading sessions.

Amazing look into the thoughts and reactions of a simple soul. Science and religion don't touch him, and he is very accepting of many things that others would blush or refuse to accept. Some of his ideas turn the real world upside down.

Best available - but not perfect

This is promoted as the guide to the subject and it would be fair to assume that it would match up seamlessly with the course content, however in my view it does not. I sense that the time pressure to get the book out and available means that it doesn't quite reflect some of the changes that have been made to the subject since the pilot phase concluded. I'll be in the queue for any updated edition without a doubt but this one just misses the mark for me.

A Good Book Into An Area I Would Not Have Imagined.

The book is pretty good. There were some definitive "take-a-ways." For example, the perspectives on Ethos, Pathos, and Logos was interesting in the sense that most business decisions are based on Logos yet it's the art of story-telling which adds Pathos; and those are both encased in Ethos. Also, if you are trying to convey multiple messages, you should have multiple stories.

I have the privilege to work in an industry where attempts to communicate are often heavily disguised as detailed powerpoint presentations. Gabrielle and Yamini provide a compelling reminder that we communicate best when we engage with our audience. "Hooked" is a brilliant and simple guidebook to help us connect in a genuine, interesting and engaging manner using stories. Each chapter provides a new insight into the art of business storytelling. Beautiful stories are used to illustrate the theme in each chapter and the bullet point summary helps focus and distill the learnings. This is a wonderful contribution and a "must read" for anyone with a passion to inspire the people they communicate with.

This is not the only book out there to do this, it is a great book with step by step instructiins on how to bring storytelling and create greater influence at work!

A decent book, but not my first pick

This book has a lot of information, no doubt about it. And you may find some things in it that you'll be hard-pressed to find elsewhere (such as non-linear damage theories, fretting, shock and impact, etc). However, the book is quite theoretical, and information is scattered over various chapters, sometimes making it difficult to find what you're looking for. And when you do find it, the information is often not presented in a precise and detailed manner, which is important whenever you attempt to extend theory to real-life problems. I found this to be the case with the strain-based fatigue discussion, and especially the fracture mechanics coverage, which is cursory at best. I recommend that you first check out Dowling's book ("Mechanical Behavior of Materials"). I have found it to be much more useful.

It is a very good book. Gives a broad explanation of failure considerations in the mechanical design process. It is complemented with examples that help to understand. It is a very technical book. If you've asked the question, "how do you make up values from imagination?", this book can help you. It's a little verbose sometimes, but definitely worth wading through a few extra words to get the knowledge. The principles of light, shade and shadow are laid out and explained in detail, and there are exercises to follow along with in the back. It's a small book, not even 70 pages, but it packs a lot of information. Very helpful book for anyone wishing to learn more about drawing/painting lights, shades and shadows.

CYNTHIA RIGGS is the author of eleven books in the Martha's Vineyard mystery series. She was born on Martha's Vineyard and is the eighth generation to live in her family homestead which she runs as a bed and breakfast catering to poets, writers, and other creative people. She lives in West Tisbury, Massachusetts.

I Want To Be Victoria Trumbull

If I ever grow up, which is debatable, according to my family, I want to be Victoria Trumbull, the protagonist of Cynthia Riggs' fabulous Martha's Vineyard mystery series. Victoria is smart -- people smart. Ok, so she's 92 years old, backed into the Meals on Wheels truck (could happen to anyone -- don't ask me how I know this, please) and she can't drive any more. But so what? She's a published poet (like the author's mother),an honorary detective on the police force, and can figure out who's hiding what and why faster than people half her age. This is a great series, and Poison Ivy is the latest in a long line of hit mysteries. I loved the idea of being denied tenure playing such an important part in the book -- what a great motivation to bump off so many people. Poison Ivy is a real gem!

the one to skip

Victoria Trumbull, long celebrated as a poet, gets her chance to teach poetry at the fictional upstart institution, Ivy Green College. (In actuality, Martha's Vineyard boasts only one high school and no colleges.) Where the perennially 92-year-old Victoria goes, murder soon follows. Victoria discovers a corpse on her very first day of class. The body belongs to Dr. Harlan Bliss, a professor at Cape Cod University and a member of the Ivy Green College Oversight Committee, which oversees faculty appointments and the like at the 10-year-old college. Before September's through, authorities uncover nearly a dozen more -- much to the dismay of the priggish Ivy Green College President Thackery Wilson!

Poison Ivy Murder, available only in the Kindle format, is probably the weakest of the Victoria Trumbull novels by far. The corpses pile up in such rapid succession that the novel starts to become a parody of a cozy. The cardboard characters don't help, either. College President Thackery Wilson evinces so much pomposity, self-importance, and ineffectuality that the reader cannot fathom that this is the same Dr. Wilson that founded Ivy Green College in order to bring higher education to those working-class Islanders left behind on a 21st century Martha's Vineyard that's become the playground for politicians and Hollywood stars. Likewise, the irascible, unreliable caretaker Walter, the ruthless academic Roberta Chadwick; Phillip Bigelow, the blustery professor of military science; and the over-achieving, tattooed former teenage mother Jodi Paloni never rise above the level of stock characters from a third-rate novel, without a grain of nuance. The fairytale resolution depends on more deus ex machinas than a Euripides tragedy.

Sadly, coming off of two of her best novels, Touch-Me-Not: A Martha's Vineyard Mystery (Martha's Vineyard Mysteries) and The Bee Balm Murders: A Martha's Vineyard Mystery (Martha's Vineyard Mysteries), Cynthia Riggs has produced a lackluster novel suitable only for the most rabidly dyed-in-the-wool Victoria Trumbull fans. Other readers can easily skip this one.

Quick read

This is the second book I have read by Cynthia Riggs. Well written light mystery.
I had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Riggs on a small boat cruise this summer so was anxious to read one of her books. Will read more of her Martha Vineyard mysteries.
