Delightful little book by a new author and illustrater...kids will lean much from this one

What a delightful, well written and illustrated little book this one is! The story, told in nicely done verse explores a dilemma we all face from time to time. You have folks with opinions and then you have folks that are driven by pure facts. There is plenty of room in this world for both points of view and Melissa Polyakov gently explores and illustrates how it would be a happier world for us all if each side accepted the other.

I had to smile when I read this tale as it brought memories to a young sergeant that worked for me in the military years ago. This young man's entire life was based on FACTS. If he could absolutely verify something in black and white, he simply could not function. To be truthful, this kid was an absolute pain to work with. I would tell him that from time to time you just had to let our imagination go, express your opinion and not necessarily back that opinion up with volumes of `facts.' Opinions are what add zip to our lives and this point is well made in this well thought-out story. It should also be noted that the author is quite subtle is sneaking in the fact that we need to accept the opinions of others. We may not agree with those opinions, but we must certainly listen and give them a chance.

The author has explored the pros and cons of facts v/s opinions by using food as an example...a nicely done little meal Miss Opinion cooks for Mr. Fact. It all works out quite well and the point is well driven home.

I love the simply verse the author uses to tell her tale; it is quite captivating. The illustrations are bright and very well done and go perfectly with the story. This is one of those books that can be used quite effectively on a one on one read, or better yet, a group read. There is plenty of room here to stimulate discussions with the wee ones you are reading it to or with. It does hold quite a number of good vocabulary words and uses them in a fashion that they are quite understandable even to the very young.

Melissa Polyakov, the author and Yana Gruntkovskayo, the illustrator, make a fine team and I am hoping we will see more of their work on down the line.

This book will be given to my daughter who teaches first grade (27 years now) to be used in her classroom.

Teachers, add this to your collection!

As children's literature is a wonderful way to engage students and create interest in abstract concepts, this children's book makes the perfect unit starter for teaching fact and opinion in elementary classrooms. The storyline is fresh and the illustrations are captivating. The characters are relatable and the story delightful. Children will see the value of expressing opinions as a way of adding color and interest to the world of facts. I hope to see more from this author and illustrator combination!

This is a fantastic children's book

This is a fantastic children's book! It's a charming story! Readers will better understand facts and opinions and be exposed to vocabulary words like objective and subjuctive. The story is first and foremost, so kids won't even realize how much they are learning! (It is written by a teacher.)

The illustrations are darling and lend themselves perfectly to the story.

Osama bin Laden’s pronouncements are rarely published in full in the United States, but transcripts of his messages-often available overseas-provide startling insight into the political, rather than religious, nature of his thinking. "Labeling us, and our acts, as terrorism is also a description of you and your acts," bin Laden said recently. "Our acts are a reaction to your acts." In this meandering rumination on modern-day terrorism, Mamdani takes a controversial step by agreeing with bin Laden, at least on this point; he argues that groups like al-Qaeda are generally motivated by legitimate political grievances with U.S. foreign policy. "In a nutshell," Mamdani writes, "the U.S. government decided to harness and even to cultivate terrorists" during the latter half of the Cold War as it sought to roll back the Soviet Union’s global influence. Now, with that legacy coming back to haunt its creators, Mamdani concludes that "no Chinese wall divides ‘our’ terrorism from ‘their’ terrorism. Each tends to feed the other." These ideas evolved from a series of talks the author gave at New York’s Riverside Church in the weeks after 9/11, and the book retains the informality of those discussions. There are flashes of inspiration, among them a thoughtful distinction between "political Islam" and "Islamic fundamentalism," two terms that are frequently and wrongfully used synonymously. There are also frustrating digressions, and Mamdani makes few attempts to address potential dissenters. Still, readers who can overlook these drawbacks will find that this study does make provocative connections across disciplines and continents-finding similarities, say, between Liberian and Zionist settlers. Mamdani is searching for big ideas, not nuances, and in this he is successful, making his book an important contribution to the national discussion on terrorism and Islam.

Many of the many post-September 11 books probing the causes of Islamic terrorism invoke Samuel Huntington-esque notions about clashes of culture; many of the same books would like to dissociate the "war on terrorism" of the twenty-first century from the more conventional conflicts of the late twentieth century. Both these notions are Mamdani's targets in this book. Politicizing notions of Islam by differentiating between secular, Westernized ("good") Muslims and fanatical, medieval ("bad") Muslims, Mamdani argues, misrepresents the often apolitical character of Islam. It also dangerously ignores cold war-era American complicity in the turbulence of the Muslim world through the waging of proxy wars, particularly the one in Afghanistan in which, says Mamdani, the CIA created Osama bin Laden. Those familiar with Noam Chomsky's recent work will likely find some of Mamdani's arguments familiar, particularly his discussion of imperialistic political violence, racism, and the modern state. Where Mamdani is unique and particularly compelling, however, is in drawing on his African-studies background to back up his assertions about violence, terrorism and Islam. Brendan Driscoll

Highly informative read and a must read for those interested in the roots of modern political terror

I found this book to be highly informative and a must read for anyone interested in the current events of our days. I say this because much if not most of the current events and struggles faced by our country the USA and the world as a whole, have their roots somewhere else. This other place is the Cold War, the various proxy wars fought, the alliances between political and societal institutions, the various American and Soviet administrations with their ideological wars, and beyond. It is a must read if you truly wish to understand the roots of modern political terror, and if you truly wish to start to create a solution to this problem. One can not create a viable solution unless one allows themselves to look at all facets of history and not be confined to biased views. 5/5 stars with my full recommendation.

Good for stimulating intelligent debate but a little too biased for my taste

First I must say this book is very well written and easy to read.

The stated purpose of the author is to stimulate a deeper and more intelligent debate on how to tackle the problem of terrorism. To solve a problem, one needs to first understand it. The author explains why common presumptions often based on ignorance and racism should be dismissed since they are too simplistic and too inaccurate to provide a real understanding of the complex problem of radical political extremism. His thorough discussion of the various political and religious movements in the middle east (and in the US) helped me understand the various philosophies and alliances that have influenced politics in the middle east in the last few decades.

In the second half of the book, Mamdani spends much time on the emergence of the jihadist movement in Afghanistan. He shows how an ideology that had gathered only marginal support since the 60's became so influencial as a result of the Russian invasion, and the involvement of Pakistan and the US. This section was very well written and very informative.

Up to this point, I found the content of the book to be extremely enlightening and it indeed fulfilled its goal of stimulating a more intelligent debate on terrorism.

When it came to discussing the post-9/11 period (namely, the US invasion of Iraq and Israel's policy in the occupied territories), I found more bias and partisan views than I found scholarly analysis. This disappointed me, it gave me the impression that the author finished the book in a hurry and just spoke with his heart instead of his mind... Instead of promoting rational debate, this section was more similar to the ridiculous partisan and self-interested debates we hear from our politicians!

Only biased if you're used to the US media

As a British reader, it's fascinating to read all the reviews of this book which describe it as "biased". Having lived in the US for several months now, it is a constant source of astonishment to me how biased (pro-Israeli government) the US media is in covering the Israel-Palestine conflict.

I'm not just talking about the European media: Haaretz (a respectable left-wing newspaper in Israel) has the following to say about operation 'Cast Lead': "Six months ago Israel asked and received a cease-fire from Hamas. It unilaterally violated it when it blew up a tunnel, while still asking Egypt to get the Islamic group to hold its fire." ([...] You would never read anything like this in the mainstream US media.

So I find Mamdani's analysis to be pretty even handed and insightful. He has done the research to back up his thoroughgoing historical analysis of the conflict. I urge people to read this account to see how much of the rest of the world views the Israel-Palestine conflict and the rest of the US' 'interventions' in other nations over the past fifty years. Unlike many US citizens, the rest of the world has neither forgiven nor forgotten the US' actions, and as a Brit I know only too well that the actions of an imperial nation have consequences that last decades and affect untold millions.

Mamdani's thesis is simply this: only by understanding the historic context of current events and acting accordingly can we create a world of peace and mutual respect.

Classic Account Of Apartheid South Africa

"Move Your Shadow" is one of the very best journalistic/popular accounts ever written on South Africa, or any other part of the continent for that matter. I was momentarily shocked to learn that this moving and insightful book is now out of print, until I recalled how ruthlessly the bottom line increasingly determines publishing these days. Lelyveld was a NY Times reporter in South Africa in the early 1980s, thoroughly exploring the most important issues throughout that bitterly divided country. Few works convey so well the routine indignity and daily horror imposed on black South Africans by the white-supremacist regime from 1948 up to the 1994 elections achieving majority rule. Perhaps the best chapter is on the long-distance bus rides required of migrant workers forced to live far from their jobs, by laws mandating residence in impoverished rural "homelands" (read: dumping grounds for unwanted "surplus" population).

The major omission in this book is the relative lack of coverage of the political resistance to apartheid. Though it gets a 5-star rating to highlight its merits, the missing political dimension means that "Move Your Shadow" probably deserves 4 1/2 stars. While Lelyveld's insight and compassion make this a superior account, one must turn elsewhere for fuller treatment of the African National Congress, Pan-Africanist Congress and other less formal movements. For a similar journalistic account also encompassing politics, read William Finnegan, "Crossing the Line." There's also Tom Lodge, "Black Politics in South Africa Since 1945," Stephen Davis, "Apartheid's Rebels," and Allister Sparks' exciting if overdramatized "Tomorrow Is Another Country." But for the best understanding, one must read what BLACK South Africans have written, including Mamphela Ramphele, "A Bed Called Home" and Elsa Joubert, "Poppie Nongena" among many others.

Good for design rules for specific filter types

This old book is pretty handy as a "just the facts ma'am" kind of guide. If you don't already know DSP, don't waste your time. You'll be totally lost and won't know what's going on. However, if you already know DSP and its associated theory and you need design rules in nice labeled steps with some examples and plenty of figures, this is a nice old book to have around. It's not trying to teach you anything, it's just trying to guide you through the design of specific types of filters. The only down side is that the programs that implement the various filters are all in Fortran. However, that is not really a fatal flaw. Every Fortran program is merely implementing an algorithm that has already been thoroughly explained. Unless you're bound and determined to completely lift programs from the book without understanding them AND you don't know Fortran, I'd say this old book is worth having in your library.

Don't let my review have you thinking there is no math in this book - there is plenty of it supporting the various filter designs. There are just no textbook explanations. For that I suggest Discrete-Time Signal Processing (2nd Edition) (Prentice-Hall Signal Processing Series). It is the definitive guide to DSP for beginners and professionals alike.

Practical and easy to understand

Digital Filter Design by Parks and Burrus is a practical book. Even though I didn't have any prior digital filter design experience, I was able to apply what I have learned to design a sample filter. As a prerequsite, this book requires a strong background in fourier analysis and understanding in transfer function. The sample code provided is extremely helpful. The book is well organized and easy to understand (provided you meet the prerequsite).

Simon Benninga is professor of finance at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and at Tel Aviv University. He is the author of numerous academic articles and three previous books. Great first book on Finance. Excel usage a major plus.

I read this book and practiced its contents in preparation for my MBA and I am glad I did. Finance requires understanding of many mathematical nuances and combining them all together to make sound business and investment decisions is inherently complicated. This book is almost 900 pages long and contains wealth of valuable finance knowledge applicable to almost all decisions involving money and time.

As the title states, this book is about Finance with Excel and only Excel (no instructions or examples using financial calculators). All the examples are explained with Excel spreadsheets and all the problems and solutions are also in Excel. The CD in this book contains all the necessary excel spreadsheets both for chapter examples and problems. I have found the provided Excel spreadsheets to be very good templates for performing financial analysis such as mortgage calculations. I advise to purchase this book ONLY with the CD unless you can download or obtain the contents of its CD elsewhere.

The last chapters are dedicated to Excel basics and I highly recommend the beginners of MS Excel to read the last chapters first.

After reading this knowledge and value rich book, you will obtain a healthy respect for the power of Finance and Excel and you will know how to use both to make sound financial and business decisions.

Some reviewers have said that some of the problems had wrong solutions. I have found no errors in either the problems or the solutions. There are some Financial concepts that are counterintuitive and a solution could seem wrong to others.

Excellent Finance Book!!

Not being a finance expert, but wanting to learn important basic finance concepts like Net Present Value, Future Value, Internal Rate of Return, etc. I bought this book because it combined this knowledge with Excel.

This is an excellent introductory book on the subject. The concepts are not easy to understand at first, but the author does an excellent job of explaining them.

The only reason I did not give it five stars is, as an earlier commenter remarked, there are a number of mistakes in the Exercise section at the end of the chapters. Not impossible to work through, but it does slow one down a little bit.

Overall, I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning the basics of important financial concepts.

Best finance book out there!

This book is perfect for learning finance in excel. There are no books out there that come close to this. The book goes over all the common finance topics and shows you how to solve those problems in excel. The book goes over step by step with the problems on how to solve them. The best part is the cd that comes along with the book. It shows you all the exercises in excel so you can check your work and see how the formulas work. I recommend this book to professors teaching finance and students who don't feel their current class is teaching them what they need. This book teaches you what you need in the real world. Professionals of all kind would find this book useful. A must buy especially for the low price. The book is huge! A steal!

you will enjoy this book but please be prepared for the roller ...

I am unsure on how to rate this book. I am emotionally drained from reading it. I was so invested in the characters and the story line and the hits kept on coming. I am trying to be objective considering the fact that it is the 4th in a 5 book series so I knew there would be no satisfaction at the end.
This book spans over a 3 week period in their relationship so it can't be resolved. If you understand the process of healing from sexual abuse you will get what she was getting at. She needed to develop that side of Gideon POV and that process is emotional and difficult to get through. Having said that, the Brett Kline thing was disappointing and I wish it would have been left out.
If you are invested in this series , you will enjoy this book but please be prepared for the roller coaster ride and understand that is purely character development and no significant advances in the storyline.
So in a direct appeal to Silvia Day. If you are at all reading your reviews. Thank you for showing the male perspective of a sexual abuse survivor and the consequences if you have not dealt with it. But please ........... for book # 5 let them both find their strength and claim their life. Finish their story line where it was worth for us to invest 3 years into this series. Skip the cookie cutter way out and span it over a few years not just weeks. If there ever was an extensive Happy Ending needed it would be in this series. Considering the time investment of the readers. I sincerely hope to see "One with you"published within a few months. Not years!!

This Series Started Off So Strong.......

Please be aware there will be small spoilers concerning the plotline.

It is such a shame......this series started out so strong. Bared To You and Reflected In You were absolute perfection. Entwined With You (book 3) was just okay for me, but I understood going into it that is was a transition book so I didn't expect too much to happen. The best part of EWY was Gideon and Eva solidified their relationship. Looking forward to Captivated By You, I had very high hopes. I had read some interviews with Ms. Day and watched her on Youtube explaining books 4 and 5 would focus on Gideon's issues and I was excited about the prospect of finally really digging into Gideon.

Unfortunately that is not how it played out for me. Right off the bat, Eva is dealing with some left over emotions concerning Brett Kline. I am like....what??? I thought that particular door closed for Eva in EWY at the Golden video premiere. She realized she loved Gideon completely and although she may have a sexual chemistry with Brett, their relationship would never resume. She belonged with Gideon. I felt the only lingering storyline concerning Brett was the sex tape....guess I was wrong. This bothered me for a couple reasons. I felt this drama was contrived only to be a filler.....I felt this issue was resolved also Eva's conflict over Brett seemed to set her back a few steps.....taking her back to that desperate girl who used sex to try and keep him. That is not the Eva that has been growing stronger and stronger in the past 3 books. I didn't get angry with Eva, but I truly didn't understand why Ms. Day chose to take Eva's character in this direction. I did get frustrated with the fact it seem to take Eva much too long to really deal with the Brett situation and would have preferred to see it wrap with more quickly.

Something different happened in Captivated By You, rather than just experiencing Eva's point of view Gideon had a turn to express his inner thoughts. It should have been awesome crawling into Gideon's head, but honestly Gideon and Eva's voice seemed to be exactly the same. I really couldn't distinguish between the two "different" views. In the past books, I thought Ms. Day did an excellent job of allowing readers to really understand Gideon even though we only saw him through Eva's eyes. And while it was nice to hear from the man himself, I am not quite sure I liked it. Gideon is not really good at telling Eva anything and he was doing things, manipulating situations and people without communicating with Eva. I found that I didn't like that aspect of him. He knows how much Eva hates that. Gideon has seen how secrets have stressed Eva and Monica's relationship so I was frustrated seeing him do the exact same thing knowing full well that these actions were going to cause problems later on. The best part to Gideon's point of view was being about to see how truly damaged he is from his past. I think I expected more growth from Gideon in this book. He has slowly started making changes to heal and confront his past in the previous books, but I really wanted to see more of that in this book and I didn't get that until the very end of the book. I am sure in book 5 Gideon will really start to the process, but I expected more.

Captivated did answer some questions that have been floating around in my head, but not all questions of course were answered. I thought some loose ends were tied up a little too quickly. For example, I have been wondering what the hell was going on with Nathan's bracelet and basically it was answered in two pages.

When I finished CBY, I turned the page and saw the title for book 5 and I can tell you quite frankly I don't feel any excitement for the next installment. I don't have that dread of waiting a year or six months for it either. I feel let down; as far as I am concerned books 3 and 4 could have been combined. I feel like the past 2 books have not taken the characters far enough and the series seems to have lost that momentum. I don't know if that is because of the long wait between installments or if that the characters are not as vibrant as they were in the beginning. I will definitely be reading the last book; it just won't be with the enthusiasm and excitement I had before. I had no problem with Ms. Day extending the series by 2 books, but I don't feel like extra books have added anything to series or strengthen the characters or the storyline.

Save your money, nothing new happening in this book, except to drive the Crossfire Series further into the ground.

*Possible Spoiler Alert*

*Yawn* Was there a purpose to this book? Unless the purpose behind this book was an attempt at driving this series into the ground, then congratulations, it was a success. This book is similar to ordering a box of candies from a company that you've trusted in the past, and they send you a huge box, and you think that it's going to be filled with all sorts of goodness, but then you open the box, and it's filled with nothing but packing peanuts, and you keep searching thinking that you're going to find something, and finally after going through all the packaging, you find a caramel. The packing peanuts in this book are the sex scenes, and try as you may to search through all of them, but you aren't going to find a caramel, maybe a piece of butterscotch candy. Because I enjoy erotica, it pains me to say "Enough with the sex", please, we get it, we also get that they need each other to survive, Gideon is the yin to Eva's yang, he can't breathe without her, his body hurts not being inside her, they feel each other's presence before they see each other, their skin aches when they part, WE GET THIS, IT WAS ESTABLISHED OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER IN ALL THREE PREVIOUS BOOKS. Seriously, they have sex before work, while on the way to work, while at work, and then after work, at this point I would be happy just to see either one standing at the water cooler talking to a co-worker about the last episode of The Walking Dead, effing anything but the two of them effing. It would be nice to read one of having an independent scene without the other waiting in the shadows. It would be interesting to see Eva going to California without Gideon trailing, as it would to read about Eva going to lunch without Gideon waiting a table close-by, it would have been interesting to read any scene without them together, because as we all find out, they can't be together without engaging in sex. That's is all there is to this book is the sex, and although I like sex scenes, it would be nice to have a little storyline to go along with it. I skipped through dozens of pages because the sex is a yawn fest.

This series began with beautiful, wealthy, interesting yet flawed and damaged people, but has turned into a series about beautiful co-dependents that I seriously doubt can take a p*ss without the other one holding his/her hand. I now loathe Cary, instead of him being a supporter and friend to Eva, all he thinks about is how her every move is going to impact him. This book is essentially the three of them discussing sex, making each other miserable, whining and complaining, but can't be away from each other for longer than an hour. C'mon, how ridiculous is it that Gideon wants Cary to move in the penthouse that he and Eva are having remodeled so that Cary doesn't feel deserted. Gideon has turned into a pansy, frantic schoolgirl, but instead of passing notes of "Do you like me, yes or no?", he sends texts. Corrine having sex with Angus would be more interesting than to reading this, watching paint dry on the walls would be more interesting than this story.

As with book three (Entwined with You) in this series, nothing was resolved, nothing new occurred, it was basically a repeat of book three. The name of this book should have been: Entwined with You Version 2.0, or Gideon Has Sex With Eva Again and Again and Again and Again and Again and Again and Again and Again.

Save your money folks, nothing new going on here. I included a "Possible Spoiler Alert" because I wasn't sure if saying nothing new occurred would be a spoiler.
