Excellent Advent devotional!
By Victoria Shephard
This is an excellent devotional for the Advent season, even if you don't belong to a denomination that practices Advent (I don't). A little different than most devotionals for Advent, this one runs from Dec. 1-31, right up to the new year.
The book is small and easy to carry on the bus or wherever. It includes a ribbon bookmark to keep your place. The pages are think and glossy - this book is built to last over many Christmas seasons! The daily Scriptures are printed in the book, so there is no need to go digging through your Bible unless you want to - there are additional readings for each day that do need to be looked up, but only if you have the inclination.
I give it four stars. I don't agree with everything in it, but I would recommend it to everyone. Can I give it 4 1/2 stars? ;)
Buy this book! :)

A great Advent resourse
By Roxanne Nanney
This is the third time I've used this book for Advent devotionals. I gave away my first copy so had to purchase another one. The devotions are brief put full of deep meaning. Dr. Miller does a great job of adding fresh insights to the very familiar Christmas story, helping us to make practical applications to our lives today.

Beautiful Christmas Devotional
By jaime
The Christ of Christmas has been a family tradition of ours for at least six years. As soon as the tree is decorated everyone yells, "Get the Christmas Book!" Each night in December we curl up together, read the message, look up the scripture and pray together. I really can't imagine Christmas without it anymore. I've looked at other Advent devotionals but I'm not sure they dig as deeply into the staggering truth of what it meant for the world when Christ was born. If you desire to help your family keep it's focus on the wonder and beauty of Christ during the holidays, I highly recommend this book to you.

Building on children's natural inclinations to pretend and reenact, play therapy is widely used in the treatment of psychological problems in childhood. 101 Favorite Play Therapy Techniques incorporates methods developed to elicit the best responses from children by therapists representing cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic, and other orientations, and selected for their practicality, specificity, and originality. Arranged for easy reference, each bearing a succinct description and targeted application, the interventions illustrated―including Fantasy, Storytelling, Expressive Arts, Game Play, Puppet Play, Play Toys and Objects, and Group Play―have been used with success to address such common problems as low self-esteem and unresolved fear and anger, as well as more serious difficulties arising from loss, abuse, and sexual trauma. All the contributors share the enthusiasm and respect of editors Kaduson and Schaefer for the special value of play therapy in reaching and healing young patients. Together, they have created an eclectic, accessible, and comprehensive resource for students and professionals that will also support parents seeking to open new lines of communication with their children.

Excellent resource for working as a professional with children
By Judith A. Van Bebber
I have been using this in my therapy practice and have found it very resourceful. It has wonderful suggestions for the therapist to untilize in assisting children to express and resolve their issues when in situations they are unable to resolve through the expressions of words. They can express through play and in cognitve ways and it works!!!

Good to have on hand
By J. Palmer
I am giving this book the same review as it's more current version, 101 More Favorite Play Therapy Techniques. There are a lot of really good, creative ideas in this first version, just as there are in the newer version. However, the one thing that is lacking in both books is a quick statement at the begining of each activity that identifies what age group and what general problem the activity is most appropriate for. Such information allows me to decide, right away, whether to invest the time in reading further about the activity if I think it would be relavent to a particular child I am working with.

Very basic intro to play therapy
By alice
Although I have only had 5 years of experience in play therapy with elementary-age children, I felt that the techniques described in this book were basic and not very imaginative- in other words, I had already thought of many of them myself. Several of the techniques described are similar variations on the same theme; for example, the assigning colors to emotions and having kids color in hearts/bodies/etc. strategy was echoed numerous times. I suggest borrowing this from the library rather than purchasing it.

Review

"Compulsively readable...Feels as if it was written more in sorrow than in anger." ―LA Weekly

"Books attacking Scientology are nothing new. But Ruthless...hits particularly close to home ― the author’s son David Miscavige has led the church since L. Ron Hubbard died in 1986." ―The New York Times Book Review, "Inside the List"

"Recounts the Miscavige family’s experience in [Scientology], which in Ron’s view, 'has become a cult, pure and simple.' Since 1986 the church’s leader has been his son, David." ―The Boston Globe

“Excoriating memoir" ―Publisher's Weekly

“A sad and painful but bravely told story.” ―Kirkus Reviews

Ruthless Scientology
By janette k. stalemo
The book written by David Miscavige's father rings true and is a clear presentation of the Church of Scientology. Having been exposed to the organization through my father who was heavily involved from my teenage years until a short time before his death, I appreciate learning about this manipulative, evil organization. While my dad was a "public scientology" he was definitely manipulated, used and harmed by the org. He was extremely defensive & controlling and we were not allowed to question or make disparaging statements about scientology. Since his death I feel free to tell the truth. Toward the end of his life, as an 80 year old cancer patient who was suffering from mild dementia church members visited him frequently to extract 44,000 dollars within a 6 week period of time and God only knows how many tens of thousands of dollars in the years prior. I only became aware of this when he started bouncing checks and the pharmacy refused to deliver his needed medications because all his credit cards were maxed out. He asked me to take over his finances. Dollars stopped flowing to scientology, he moved in with me, his physical and financial health improved dramatically. Still the Church continued to call to"check on how he was doing" . Without fail the 3rd w question in was a request for money. It was disgusting .

A father's story
By College Stealth
Uh. Wow. Kind of a book that is the most compassionate way to let the world know your son is a monster. Not a lot of screaming, but acknowledgement of some character flaws, like megalomania and sociopath tendencies. I get some people not carrying if their dad dies, but, the narrator doesn’t seem like a total creep, not like the Kelly’s Dad on Bearing Sea Gold.

The most interesting point about Miscavige’s story is that he is critically looking at Scientology and focusing on his son, and the beliefs that he has been imposing on other people. There is actually a lot that David’s father, Miscavige (I’ll just call the dad Miscavige), talks about with regards to the things that are good, or were good, or had beliefs that once spoke to him in the faith. I think that this might be one of the first books I’ve read on the subject that speaks highly of the belief, but condemns the leader. I know that scientology has been a hot item lately, “Going Clear” and Leah Remini’s book are two of the main ones that come to mind when thinking about the church. I’d put this one up there in terms of the authority and the sincerity with which it is written, where as other ones talk about their reasons for joining as almost apologetic, whereas Miscavige isn’t, he’s talking about what the good used to be in it.

Miscavige tells the story like you would perceive a father to do; he pays attention to heights and weight when his kids are playing sports. He’s realistic in his relationship with his wife Loretta, admits to hitting her, and doesn’t make excuses about it, just describes it as a matter of fact and part of their relationship. It’s kind of interesting that he acknowledges that she passed away and can’t provide her perspective, it seems a bit sincerer that way. The narratives language isn’t rose colored and painted fluidly either, when David was having an asthma attack Miscavige “smacked him on the ass and he cried, which forced him to exhale and that stopped the attack,” again kind of giving insight into that rough narrative.

The asthma plays a big role in Miscavige’s discussion of David and Scientology, as the asthma really limited David, but after Miscavige took him to see some people at the Scientology place his asthma stopped. This is what Miscavige really attributes to David’s turn to Scientology, the idea that it cured him of asthma. Miscavige himself becomes involved because of his situation with his wife and admits some of the psychological remedies Scientology gave him early on. It’s actually kind of neat in his transition to Scientology facets because he’s talking shop about his boys and then goes into theories of Hubbard, but does so very naturally in the dialogue (yes, I know it was co-written, but the tone doesn’t change).

Miscavige discusses being accused of rape, acknowledges the churches help during his time of need, and eventually decides to join the church after he divorces his wife. Miscavige is pretty honest about some of the early time in the church when he became involved in 1985, he’s pretty passionate when he talks about music and making music, but then things go a bit downhill. Miscavige’s perspective focuses a lot on the performance aspect of Scientology and how it bilks people into thinking that it was more involved than it actually was, as well as spread further than it actually was.

Miscavige admits he was never in the hole, but talks about the psychological impact David’s personality has on others, comparing it to a 1980’s boss, and maintaining entourages that always agreed with him wherever he went in the organization. Miscavige then talks about David’s man-crush on Tom Cruise, and how David sought to woo Tom, but then quickly reflects back to David’s competitive attitude. Highlighting that David didn’t finish school, Miscavige even notes that David played Trivial Pursuit requiring a pop-culture person on his team so as not to lose.

It’s kind of interesting that Miscavige hearkens to his own background and talks about David’s inefficiency as a manager and supervisor. There’s a little window of this, which I’m not entirely sure what to make of, especially since David is still the head of the church and it’s been seeming to do pretty well financially. Miscavige eventually flees the church with his new wife, but a lot of it has to do with his music not being as appreciated as before, and his soul dying bit by bit every day.

The last quarter of the book focuses on Miscavige’s new life after leaving Scientology. In particular, he did get $100,000 from David to buy a new house. It is a bit surprising that he talks about using the internet for the first time and learning about Hubbard and some of the truths behind him, in particular his military career. Miscavige explains his authorship of the book, being constantly followed by PI’s and Scientology’s denial of this, even when there are federal recordings that David knew about the PI’s tracking Miscavige. Then there’s some family sadness with Miscavige’s children not really interacting with him, Miscavige reflects on Scientology, and then the book ends. Oh, and there’s pictures, which are a nice touch.

The book Scientology doesn't want you to read!
By Tash50Tash50
Mr. Ron Miscavige's book is a wealth of information. I believe the levels of information this book reveals breaks down into two major categories. Those who are relatively new to learning about David Miscavige (DM) and the Church of Scientology (CoS) and the second group is ex-members, family and friends friends of ex-members and those who are dedicated to Scientology watching (either as an activist, religious scholars or other reasons for following this highly controversial belief system.)

I believe both groups I mentioned will take something away from this book, but before I get too much farther into my review I wish to be very upfront about this. If you are only interested in this book because you believe you will get juicy scoops on Hollywood Celebrities - you might be disappointed. While there is some minor talk of celebrity Scientologists as it relates to the author's son and some of the author's interactions with them, this is not an expose on CoS and Hollywood celebrities. It is about the journey the author went through in and out of the CoS, and of course, a lot of particulars on how DM was from infancy, to child and as his life progressed until he became one of the most controversial leaders of a belief system that many classify as a cult. Make no mistake...this IS the story of two men's lives as it relates to Scientology.

For those who fall into the latter group I mentioned- there is quite a bit of information that is already known to those of us who follow CoS. it makes it no less poignant or tragic, IMO, that this belief system puts its "clergy" members through these types of abuses. It also paints a very vivid picture of a young DM. The background of DM probably won't come as too much of a surprise to the informed reader.

For the former group, this book provides a very good look at what it is like for those who become involved in the CoS; especially for those persons who know only the bare bones first person accounts and stories that have been catching fire and spreading awareness of the CoS. it is a huge story comparatively speaking since it deals with DM.

That being said -- this book, while very personal, is much more neutral than I expected. By that I mean that the author seems to take pains in stating his opinion quite straightforwardly without too much supposition on what could have been. He also takes more responsibility than I expected. He seems to be quite fair in his telling. I say this from the vantage point of knowing many first person accounts of the CoS and DM.

The author can occasionally come off as tip toeing gently, but due to the extremely litigious nature of the CoS I expected it. That shouldn't imply or suggest that there aren't loads of details, insight and the ability to gain hindsight perspective from this book. I think it is extremely important to capture these accounts and make sure they are available for people who either are considering joining the CoS, have family members in or for the purpose of educating yourself on what is happening behind the PR curtain of an organization that claims it is pro-human rights and claims it walks that walk, and forming your own educated opinion from all the materials available.

It took quite a lot of fortitude to pen this book considering the very personal negative information the author reveals. Imagine having all of your deepest darkest secrets in the hand of a group that allegedly espouse the priest penitent privilege -- yet all of sudden that same organization is spilling those secrets to anyone who will listen, buying websites to place that information on, having current members film testimonies that you are a "Dirty Pig" and much more yet they had no issue with you for 40+ years.

The courage that the author shows in proclaiming his shortcomings due to the "always attack" posture of CoS is not something to be taken lightly. And while you (and I) may not like some of his mistakes, I think it is far more plausible that the author takes responsibility for past actions then it is for the CoS to say they never do anything wrong - ever, ever. It's always someone else who is lying or has done something wrong as a standard response to any negativity. They are the only person/group on the planet that has never made a mistake, lied or hurt someone. And, of course, they say that the author is making this story up (for money, revenge, because he's a defrocked apostate and any other number of allegations that have been offered before on others who have spoke out about the CoS practices) despite many of the assertions being factually documented by photographs, testimony and even their own admission.

I think there are two sides to every story and if you are remotely interested in the CoS for any reason, this book is a valuable read. I won't reveal any spoilers, but I will say there is still quite a bit of new information here and this should definitely be on the reading list for those who are interested in the CoS.

I would have rated it a 3.5 if the option was there. While this doesn't break down all new barriers with every revelation, it certainly reveals enough for me to understand why the CoS was so upset about this book being published. Additionally, the writing is clean, it is easy to read, it doesn't use a phenomenal amount of Scientology speak which can be confusing for never-ins, it explains the behind the scenes of one family who raised one man who would be a Tzar of his kingdom and allows you to see that behind the CoS curtain isn't the Wizard of Oz, but just a normal man, not a God, who has allegedly caused much pain, disconnection, heart break. What kind of human the author's son is...well that's for you to decide based on your own research and opinion.

An informative and interesting book for all those interested in the CoS and religious belief systems.

I suggest reading Going Clear either prior to this book, or after this book if you haven't already read it; Going Clear really places this book in context.

Bibliography and the Sociology of Texts, by D. F. McKenzie

D.F. McKenzie shows how the material form of texts crucially determine their meanings. He demonstrates that as works are reproduced and reread, they take on different forms and meanings. This is true of all forms of recorded information, McKenzie claims, including sound, graphics, films, landscape and new electronic media. The bibliographical skills first developed for manuscripts and books can, he shows, be applied to a wide range of cultural documents. This book offers a unifying concept of texts that seeks to acknowledge their variety and the complexity of their relationships.

The 'geneaology' of text
By A Customer
Bibliography is not the subject of this book. If you are a teacher, don't assign it to students as a guide to citing sources.
Sociology of text ('histoire du livre,' as the author says) is the subject. Do assign it to advanced undergraduate or graduate students who want a lucid explanation of this basic reciprocity: text is historically, socially, culturally produced and received; in turn, text creates or alters history, society, and culture.
The author was a British bibliographer concerned with text in any medium, not only print. He was widely known for his work on orality and literacy in New Zealand. In this accessible book (based on a series of lectures), McKenzie lays out a critical theory of text as a cultural artifact that applies to any form of recorded information in any medium, and that is useful in any text-dependent discipline. His topic is how the material form of texts determines their potential meanings.
His primary examples, the 1835 Declaration of Indendence and 1840 Treaty of Waitangi by which sovereignty in New Zealand shifted from the Maori to the British, is a superb case study of textual authority as it is complicated by oral culture, literacies, technologies of rhetoric, and print culture. By itself, this chapter's material analysis and textual criticism of documentation in treaty-making between indigenous people and colonizers is worth the price of the book.

The Future of Success: Working and Living in the New Economy, by Robert B. Reich

If you think it’s getting harder to both make a living and make a life, economist and former secretary of labor Robert Reich agrees with you. Americans may be earning more than ever before, but we’re paying a steep price: we’re working longer, seeing our families less, and our communities are fragmenting.

With the clarity and insight that are his hallmarks, Reich delineates what success has come to mean in our time. He demonstrates that although we have more choices as consumers, and investors, the choices themselves are undermining the rest of our lives. It is getting harder for people to be confident of what they will be earning next year, or even next month. At the same time, our society is splitting into socially stratified enclaves--the wealthier walled off and gated, the poorer isolated and ignored. Although the trends he discusses are powerful, they are not irreversible, and Reich makes provocative suggestions for how we might create a more balanced society and more satisfying lives. Some of his ideas may surprise you; all should spark a healthy–and essential–national debate.

From Publishers Weekly
From his dual perspective as former Clinton administration secretary of labor and academic social scientist, Reich (bestselling author of Locked in the Cabinet) offers a knowledgeable overview of the pros and cons of today's economy for the average worker. New ways of doing business spurred by digital technology, he states, have led to "eye-popping deals and bargains, opportunities never dreamed ofAexactly what you want, from anywhere, at the best price and value" for consumers. At the same time, the ease with which potential buyers can switch to any better new deal puts all producers under intense competitive pressure. Reich argues that the choice between innovation or death that producers now face has filtered down to workers in the form of reduced loyalty from employers and sharply curtailed retirement and fringe benefits. Those who suspect that they are working harder over longer hours will find confirmation here that they are in good company, as well as a keen analysis of the impact of our new working arrangements on marriages, children and how we enjoy our lives. Then Reich pops the $1 million question: Would we willingly accede to the new demands of the workplace if we fully appreciated the consequences for our family lives? Sensing a growing dissatisfaction across the nation, Reich offers tantalizing proposals for moderating the more disruptive influences that have arrived along with the blessings of the emerging economy. (Jan. 15) Forecast: Reich's personal, engaging approach to the hot button topic of worker burnout in the new economy, combined with his high visibility in the traditional media, should raise the profile of this title, which has an announced 100,000-copy first printing, as well as a simultaneous audiobook release from Random.

The former secretary of labor, author of best sellers like The Work of Nations, analyzes the benefits and stresses of the new Internet-driven economy.

From Booklist
The erstwhile secretary of labor says he loved that job like no other he ever had. He spent long hours at it--so long that his small son asked his father to wake him when he came home, even though the boy would be sleeping, because then he would know for sure that his father was around. Reich decided shortly after to resign and to make the ever longer hours Americans are working the stuff of a new book. The first section of his tripartite essay describes the radical deracination of work during the last three decades as standardization gave way to personalization because new technologies, crucially including the computer and its myriad applications, allow narrowly targeted marketing to thrive and prosper. The second homes in on the new ways of life and success under the constant-growth economy, which include working forever, selling yourself constantly, outsourcing the functions of the family, and regarding all social attachments (i.e., "communities") as just so many disposable or tradable goods. In the last section, consisting of two chapters on choice (choice is, by the way, supposed to justify the personalized economy that requires the additional working hours), Reich concludes that you can either be successful or have a life but, for the foreseeable future, not both. Despite the fact that most of what he says will strike many as dreadfully probable and some few as utterly ghastly, Reich is ebullient. Ray Olson

The Paradox of Success
By Donald Mitchell
This book clearly deserves more than 5 stars. It is Professor Robert Reich's best book, and the first to go beyond Professor Peter Drucker's thinking about the future of "knowledge" work. It is well written, and designed to stir a debate and self-examination . . . rather than answer all of the questions in an opinionated way. Nicely done!
In sharing an epiphany that he had, Professor Reich describes the trap of success that he ran into as Secretary of Labor for President Clinton. "My problem was that I loved my job and couldn't get enough of it." Sounds okay so far, doesn't it? Well, read on. " . . . [A]ll other parts of my life shriveled into a dried raisin." He quit after calling to tell his children that he would not be home before bedtime for the sixth night in a row, and he son begged him to wake the son during the night simply for the comfort of knowing his father was in the house. As a result of having had that experience and happily changing his life balance, "I am writing here about making a living and making a life . . . [and it's] geting harder to do both."
The book is an excellent summation of the reasons why the most successful people typically work the longest hours and the most intensely. Trends suggest that this imbalance is likely to get worse.
Basically, the current economy puts a huge premium on finding new, creative solutions whether as a technologist, designer of new business models, new product conceptualizer, or marketer. Most people cannot synthesize all of those roles into one person -- the perfect entrepreneur. Those who can are even more valuable. The digital society vastly increases the rewards for these innovations by making them available to more people faster. Much of this new work is "creative" rather than "knowledge" work. I think that distinction is a useful one that should be retained in examining the subject.
Some of the consequences of this situation are that personal lives are disappearing under the waves of career. Loyalty to anything but the current assignment is modest. Family life is shriveling. Naturally, that may be what you want. Or is it?
The book culminates in suggesting that each person more consciously consider the personal choices of how to allocate time. In addition, there is a choice that society must make about how hard to pursue economic opportunity versus creating a more balanced connection among people. The ultimate strivers tend to hang out and live with each other, and have less and less contact with those who are not the top performers. It is a new form of elitism that can undermine many of our social mores. He suggests that we think about this choice in both economic and moral terms.
In both cases he finds, "It's a question of a balanced society."
My own experience is that it's good to step back from concentration, even if your goal is only to achieve economically. That seems to give your subconscious time to come up with better solutions.
I also suspect that many people end up overcommitted to work because they do not have the skill to insulate themselves from work. That isn't taught anywhere. You have to learn it on your own. Unfortunately, many people have to crash and burn first . . . sometimes taking their families with them. That's the hard way. I'm sure we can find easier ways. With people living longer, it's even less reasonable to expect that everyone will want to or be able to keep up these enormous paces for many years. The most intense field (like investment banking) have always been mostly handled by the young. But what do you do for an encore?
However you decide what balance should mean for you, I do hope you will consider the question. You and those you love will be much better served by your conscious decisions as a result.
May you enjoy a wonderful balance of health, happiness, peace, and prosperity!

Why work is getting harder, and life more lonely. . .
By ConsultantsMind
Reich (personal bio covered by other reviewers) covers
some of the mega-trends that are affecting our lives.
The book follows this train of thought, if only roughly.
1) Technology and globalization is breaking down barriers for competition. With so many suppliers, buyers have more choice. There are better deals everywhere and switching costs are going down. You can change (your house, job, lifestyle) easier than ever before.
- Every year 17% of Americans change residences, and 20% of them change jobs.
2) It is a buyers market and sellers are forced to innovate. Everything must be better, faster, and cheaper. The innovators are increasingly independent, and networked free agents (rather than a vertically-integrated conglomerate). These free agents seek market visibility by associating with large recognized brand portals: Disney, Dell, Harvard, and AOL.
- 90% of the 7,000 entertainment firms in Los Angeles have fewer than 10 employees.
3) Loyalty? Companies are constantly trying to cut costs and looking for cheaper suppliers (and employees). "The underlying cause isnt a change in the American character. It is to be found in the increasing ease by which buyers and investors can get better deals, and the competitive pressure this imposes on all enterprises. As the pressure intensifies, institutional bonds are loosening. (page 71)
4) The nature of work has changed. There is more emphasis on the individual; they must provided for themselves, and constantly define their value. It is an opportunity, but also a great source of insecurity.
The gap in wealth is increasing.
- In the US, the top 1% of people hold 18% of the wealth.
- CEO pay (as a % of typical workers salary) has risen from 40x (1980) to 85x (1990) to 419x (2000)
5) Americans are working longer hours. The opportunity cost of not work is very high: people are compelled to work for that marginal income. The free agent culture: People take their work home with them
- Americans work 350 hours a year more than Japanese and Europeans
- 30% of families are supported by single parents
6) As free agents, we sell ourselves constantly. (Not just when applying for a job) Individuals now blaze their own career paths by making reputations in their fields, not in their organizations. (page 143)
7) Families are shrinking, as both women and men feel compelled to work more. Many of the functions for the family are being outsourced: meals, childcare, shopping.
- The percentage of unmarried people with no children is 32% (1998)
- In Massachusetts, more babies are born to women over thirty (than under thirty)
- Spending on take-out & restaurants exceeds the spending on groceries.
8) Although technology is making our lives easier, more efficient, we are very alone. As a result, we are paying for attention: spas, clubs, counseling, childcare, and brokerage. Companies are segmenting their markets by their customers ability to pay for service (or attention). Invariably, this trend will continue as more people work longer hours and spend less time at home and with their families.
9) Communities are becoming commodities. People are more mobile. We choose our location, neighbors and lifestyles. Friendships start and end easier. We choose the communities that offer the best return on investment: lifestyle, schools, and real estate value. Society is becoming more segregated as people bargain for something better; no one wants to subsidize anyone else.
10) Leadership is about attracting and keeping talent; governance is salesmanship (section title pg. 209).
Finally, Reich discusses the choices we must make in light of the world we live in. Overall, it is an insightful and organized view of the hectic life we live.

Excellent, comprehensive overview but...
By JackOfMostTrades
What Former Labor Secretary Reich does say, he says with insight and clarity: the transformation of society into one that is obsessively "bottom line" driven, whether it be a company seeking highest profitable returns or an on-line customer seeking the quickest delivery time for an item. However the result of this thinking, according to the author creates two major problems: it widens the income gap between economic classes and it makes "time is money" the paradigm of the new millenium--at the expense of personal and family relations, self-reflection and understanding, enjoyment of life outside of work. The well-off have access to service (massage, personal trainers, limousines,); as for the poor: let them do stretching exercises, jog, and take the bus. The author insists that as the more affluent become more insular, they do not intentionally separate themselves from the needy or disadvantaged; it's just that they follow the dictates of common sense that says why not get the best bang for the buck (for example, not caring or acting on the fact that low prices of computers is at least due in part to woefully low wages among foreign workers who produce the chips). We need to reassess our values, according to Reich, and ask ourselves whether indeed do we really want to live overworked if pampered lives with less and less time for those things which traditionally display our humanity. All in all, a very inclusive, incisive book with such disparate citations as Oscar Hammerstein and brain chemistry research to promote the thesis. Two small issues I have though: 1) I wonder if we really aren't so aware of the injustices around us and simply have a "that's life" attitude; and 2) I believe the author might have included a bit more regarding the role of the media in influencing opinion, especially given that other opinion forums are not much examined or respected. Nevertheless, anyone who is concerned about the future of work, American culture, and "family values" should enjoy and receive insights from this book even if he or she doesn't totally agree with it.

From the indefatigable Wallace family, authors of The Book of Lists and The People’s Almanac series (New York Times bestsellers that sold over eight million copies internationally), came 1981’s The Intimate Sex Lives of Famous People.

This compelling bestseller that kept many a reader up at night with its two hundred revealing profiles and three hundred rare photos just got better with a dozen new entries on the nocturnal fascinations of the iconic Tupac Shakur, Carlos Casteneda, Jim Morrison, Nico, Wilt Chamberlain, Ayn Rand, Kurt Cobain, Princess Diana, Aleister Crowley, Anna Nicole Smith, Michael Hutchence, and Malcolm X.

Irving Wallace was the famous novelist and screenwriting author of The Chapman Report and The Word. His wife, Sylvia Wallace, wrote the best-selling novel The Fountains. The Wallace family’s publishing magic lives on with Amy Wallace, author of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice: My Life with Carlos Castaneda, and David Wallechinsky, author of The Complete Book of the Summer Olympics and Tyrants: The World’s Worst Dictators.

FASCINATING.
By D. Blankenship
I remember purchasing this work via some sort of book club when it was first published. Looking back almost thirty years ago I have trouble remembering the reason why. I suppose that even though the only love lives I have ever been more than mildly interested in are mine and that of my wife. I suppose though, if I am to be truly honest with myself, I suppose I possess a bit of the voyeur in me as most of us do. I love niggle little bits of information and store them away like a squirrel with acorns...saving them for some rainy day I guess. Now that being said...

This work by the Wallace family is an absolute hoot! This 618 page book (I have the hard cover here in front of me) covers the sex lives, or in some cases, the lack of sex lives, of around 200 individuals. For the most part these are historical figures, celebrities, actors, artists....well, as the title says "of Famous People." Now keep in mind that for the most part all of these people are dead, but the reader will come upon very familiar names. From Hitler to Gandhi to an unending list of movie stars and sports heroes through artists, writers, poets, scientists, and beyond...they are all here.

The author has given us a short biography of each of these individual (like as in why are they famous), what they were like in person, their love lives and finally their quirks, if any. Now don't get the impression that this is some sort of collection of off colored stories that you see in the grocery line. No, this is a pretty well researched piece of work and the authors back it up with documentation. When speculation is made, the author's are the first to point it out. This book is not an erotic peek into the lives of their subjects and the only times the authors delve into this area is when they quote statements or letters from their subjects. All in all, for the subject matter, this is a very dignified book. But dignified dose not make it stuffy, no, no, no...far from that. Like I said, this work is an absolute hoot to read.

Was Edna St. Vincent Millay heterosexual, bisexual or lesbian? Do you know? Did Ms. Millay know? How many hours during his life time did Errol Flynn spend making love? (He tells us and apparently kept some sort of log. I can identify with that as I have been keeping log books on my mileage running and biking for years and lists of birds I have seen; I am a habitual record keeper and always have been...I never thought about sex though...hmmm, nothing wrong with a short list I suppose). Was Nikolai Lenin a bigger swinger than Chairman Mai? How about Gen. Douglas MacArthur? Chopin, Debussy, Liszt, Stokowski...did these guys only practice and write their music, or did they have "distractions?"

I collect absolutely useless facts like a wool coat collects lint. The useless stuff simply sticks in my head and never leaves. The next time you and I are setting at the local caf having coffee and you ask me "Hey don, how did William Gladstone controlled his sexual appetite?" Well I will be able to tell you.

For a fun and informative read, this is a nice one to have lying around and it has aged quite well. It is certainly tame reading by today's standards, but I cannot say that is a bad thing. At least the authors of this work were literate, which is not something I can truthfully say about some of our contemporaries.

I am giving this one five stars simply because I enjoy reading bits and pieces from it. As for it being a "must read" book, well.......
