About the Author
Justin G. Longenecker established SMALL BUSINESS MANAGEMENT as a leader in the market from the first edition of the book 52 years ago. In addition to this market-leading text, he wrote a number of other business books and numerous articles in journals, such as Journal of Small Business Management, Academy of Management Review, Business Horizons, and Journal of Business Ethics. Longenecker was active in several professional organizations and served as president of the International Council for Small Business. In 2005, the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (USASBE) honored him with the Max S. Wortman Lifetime Achievement Award. In addition, the selection as a USASBE Justin G. Longenecker Fellow is the highest recognition that the Association gives to individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the development, furtherance and benefit of small and medium businesses. Justin Longenecker truly was a legend in his own time and continues to have profound influence through the lives of those who knew him. Longenecker grew up in a family business. After attending Central Christian College of Kansas for two years, he earned his B.A. in political science from Seattle Pacific University, his M.B.A. from Ohio State University, and his Ph.D. from the University of Washington. He taught at Baylor University, where he was Emeritus Chavanne Professor of Christian Ethics in Business until his death in 2005.

Bill Petty is Professor of Finance and the W.W. Caruth Chairholder in Entrepreneurship at Baylor University, and has been named a University Master Teacher. He also helped establish the Baylor Angel Network where he now serves on the Board. He holds a PhD and an MBA from the University of Texas at Austin and a BS from Abilene Christian University, where he is a member of the University's Board of Trustees. He has taught at Virginia Tech University and Texas Tech University, and has served as the dean of the business school at Abilene Christian University. Petty's research interests include acquisitions of privately held companies, shareholder value-based management, the financing of small and entrepreneurial firms, angel financing, and exit strategies for privately held firms. He has served as co-editor for the Journal of Financial Research and editor of the Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance. He has published articles in a number of finance and small business journals and is the co-author of a leading corporate finance textbook Foundations of Finance. Petty has worked as a consultant for oil and gas firms and consumer product companies. He also served as a subject matter expert on a best-practices study on shareholder value-based management, funded by the American Productivity and Quality Center, and he was part of a research team for the Australian Department of Industry to study the feasibility of establishing a public equity market for small- and medium-sized enterprises in Australia. He has served on the Board of Trustees for the Financial Management Association and currently serves on the Board of the United States Association of Small Business and Entrepreneurship (USASBE). Finally, he serves as the audit chair for a publicly traded energy firm.

Leslie E. Palich is Professor of Management and Entrepreneurship and the W.A. Mays Professor of Entrepreneurship at Baylor University, where he teaches courses in Small Business Management, International Entrepreneurship, Strategic Management, and International Business to undergraduate and graduate students in the Hankamer School of Business. He is also associate director of the Entrepreneurship Studies program at Baylor. He holds a PhD and an MBA from Arizona State University, and a BA from Manhattan Christian College. Palich's research has been published in the Academy of Management Review, Strategic Management Journal, Journal of Business Venturing, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Management, Journal of Organizational Behavior, journal of small business management, and several other periodicals. Palich has taught entrepreneurship and strategic management in a number of countries in Europe and Latin America. His interest in entrepreneurial opportunity and small business management dates back to his grade-school years, when he set up a produce sale venture to experiment with small business ownership. That early experience became a springboard for a number of other enterprises. Since that time, he has owned and operated domestic ventures in agribusiness, automobile sales, real estate development, and educational services, as well as an international import business. Dr. Palich currently owns and operates Lead Generation X, an Internet marketing firm that employs cutting-edge promotional methods to serve its clients and their customers.

Frank Hoy is the Paul R. Beswick Professor of Innovation and Entrepreneurship in the School of Business at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, where he serves as director of the Collaborative for Entrepreneurship & Innovation. Previously, he was director of the Centers for Entrepreneurial Development, Advancement, Research and Support at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). Professor Hoy joined the WPI faculty in August 2009. He holds a BBA from the University of Texas at El Paso, an MBA from the University of North Texas, and a PhD in management from Texas A&M University. He was a faculty member in the Department of Management at the University of Georgia for 10 years, where he founded and directed the Center for Business and Economic Studies, coordinated the entrepreneurship curriculum, and served as state director of the Georgia Small Business Development Center. In 1991, he returned to Texas to join UTEP as a professor of management and entrepreneurship and dean of the College of Business Administration. Hoy is a past president of the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship, which honored him in 2014 with the Max S. Wortman Lifetime Achievement Award. He is a past chair of the Entrepreneurship Division of the Academy of Management. His research has appeared in the Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Journal of Business Venturing, and Family Business Review, and he is a past editor of Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice.

INTRODUCTION

Mosaic was a widespread form of decoration in the Greek and Roman world. Evidence of its popularity can be seen in the many square miles of mosaic floors that survive from Syria to Greece, from Egypt to Tunisia, from Spain to France, from Britain to Germany, and from Croatia to Italy.

In the Hellenistic age, the tyrant Hiero II of Syracuse gave King Ptolemy III of Egypt a grand ceremonial ship whose cabins were decorated with splendid mosaics depicting scenes from the Iliad, while in the Roman age, Julius Caesar brought mosaics along on his military campaigns, presumably to adorn his tent, and the emperor Caligula desired that even his luxurious vessels on Lake Nemi be covered with polychrome mosaics.

In our own time, after one of the icons of modern culture, John Lennon of the Beatles, was assassinated on the street outside his home in New York, a nearby area of Central Park was turned into a memorial known as Strawberry Fields. This memorial features a round mosaic of a stylized sun with the title of Lennon’s most famous song, “Imagine,” in the center. Its geometric pattern may have been inspired by those of Roman mosaics, such as the apse of the caldarium in the House of Menander at Pompeii. And so we find one of the most representative arts of antiquity, seemingly vanished forever, making a very striking reappearance in the contemporary world.

This example of artistic continuity is not unique. In February 1917, when a performance of the Ballets Russes, with scenery and costumes by Picasso, was staged at the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, the artist visited Pompeii with the dancer Leonide Massine and the impresario Sergei Diaghilev. None other than Jean Cocteau, who was directing the show, took a photograph of Picasso and Massine in front of the mosaic fountain in the House of Marcus Lucretius Fronto (plate 2). In the House of the Labyrinth, Picasso had the opportunity to see a mosaic depicting the Minotaur (plate 4). The artist, who had attended the Spanish bullfights since childhood and was moreover a man of extraordinary sensibility, could not but identify with this man-bull who is betrayed to his death by his half-sister. The Minotaur leaves the cave anguished, not so much by the wounds to his body as by those inflicted on his heart. From this encounter arose one of the most celebrated themes of Picasso’s art (plate 3).

The posthumous influence of the ancient art of mosaic does not end there; many other examples could be cited. For instance, some years ago, a well-known italian musical agent and passionate archaeologist of the Near East had a copy of the central part of the famous mosaic map in Madaba, depicting the city of Jerusalem and the Dead Sea, made for the music room of his home near Verona (plate 232).

Still, beginning in the Middle Ages, the art of tessellated mosaic was largely supplanted by that of large marble inlays. The cause of this decline is difficult to determine, although it is possible that in the Roman world, where half the population was enslaved, the low cost of manpower allowed for a greater abundance of such handicrafts. Indeed, the many square miles of ancient mosaics suggest that while they were very elaborate, they must not have been very costly to make. Today, in any case, the medium no longer has the importance that it did in antiquity, and there are only sporadic revivals, such as those by Italian craftsmen in Ravenna and Piazza Armerina, intended for the luxury market.

News of an ancient but ignored technique

Most art history books ignore the art of mosaic. They just mention it and with very small pictures, if you're lucky enough. This book offers not only an excellent text but also enormous details to show the very different techniques used in these cultures. Highly instructive. Worth every penny (quarter, euro, etc.)

This is truly a beautiful book packed full of exquisite colour images which are crystal clear. For the art tragic its simply a must have. Beautifully presented and every page turn is delicious. its well set out and very informative. A wonderful reference book for anyone wanting to educate themselves on the art of mosaics, very helpful and informative but even as simply a coffee table book its a perfect addition to anyone's library.

Great, but a few complants.

So, let's star off with complants. First of all, when you said that when Obi-Wan said that Anakin was great pilot when he met him, he was correct. Thats my only complant. Now I loved the book. If I had to pick which was better, I would pick sith. Keep making the Star Wars books. I recomend this book for Star Wars fans. :)

He and his siblings were introduced to slavery, to which the family was opposed. By the time Cody was 12, he knew how to camp, lasso and ride wild horses, drive teams of oxen, and how to handle firearms. He also developed a deep appreciation for the clothing, music, dances, games, and martial skills of the Native American tribes. Cody saw the immense value of their sign language. From friends and relatives, he also learned the impact of a dramatic entrance or gesture. Pre-Civil War violence engulfed the Cody family, and Warren keeps readers engrossed as she describes the deadly mayhem that the newspapers labeled "Bloody Kansas." When Cody enlisted in the Union Army a week before his 18th birthday, his talents made him perfect for his role as a scout and spy. He would go on to found the traveling extravaganza Buffalo Bill's Wild West and Congress of Rough Riders of the World. Enjoyed

I read this book as a 72 year old to learn info about Billy Cody and was so interested to learn all the history of Kanas and the boarder wars. How is it that I have lived so long and never known any of this??!!..I highly recommend this book to any who are interested in our history..especially mid western and western history. Cody was a part of it all!

Fascinating and compelling narrative nonfiction.

Warren herself points out in the author's note at the end of the book that her focus here was not entirely on Buffalo Bill, but on Bleeding Kansas and the events surrounding Kansas's statehood. And seeing as William Cody spent part of his childhood as well as his teenage years in Kansas at that time, he made a great way to tell the story of what was going on in Kansas at that time. Using Cody's own words as well as those of other family members and witnesses, Warren does a great job of sharing the tensions and conflict that boiled over into bloodshed and terror after Congress gave Kansans the right to decide whether to be a free or slave state. After the death of his older brother, Cody and his family set off for Kansas looking for a place to prosper and forget. But none of them forsaw the conflict that would invade their lives. The invasion of Kansas by slaveholders from Missouri and elsewhere clashed with Cody's father's beliefs and when that became known Cody's father was stabbed. While Isaac Cody survived the stabbing, his stance on slavery forced him away from his family in order to protect them and his family struggled without him. Within three years, Isaac would be dead and Billy would be left at the age of 11 to be the man of the house. But his own restless, wandering nature made it a struggle to stay home.

Written in a compelling style, often times using direct quotes from Billy himself as well as his sister, Julia, and other witnesses, The Boy Who became Buffalo Bill, focuses on Billy's youth, the years leading up to Bleeding Kansas and the events surrounding Billy's life there. While the author does get into his adult life a bit at the end, the focus here is on his teenage years, his involvement in outlaw raids during the Civil War, and his service in the Union Army. It's clear that Warren is more trusting of Cody's own words than many others, and Cody was known to exaggerate and even make things up which makes it hard to know how much of his own version of his life was actually true. But regardless, Warren presents a compelling read, leaving it to the reader to accept or reject Cody's version of events.

I loved this book! This book is both informative and immensely entertaining! I believe that I've learned more history from reading biographies than actual history books; and you'll definitely learn a lot from this wonderful biography of Buffalo Bill Cody! This is a book for all age groups!
