From Booklist
Gr. 3-5. Like other books in the Kids Can series, this combines information presented at middle-grade level with activities that help children absorb it. The familiar horizontal format gives plenty of space for the black-and-white-illustrations, including cartoon-like drawings, photographs, and diagrams. Meteorologist Mark Breen offers insights into the complex subject of weather forecasting, explaining the science that lies behind these useful predictions. Hands-on projects include making a barometer, a rain gauge, and a "tornado" from a spinning column of water in two-liter plastic bottles taped together. Informal, yet always informative, this book is a good place to look for weather-related activities for classroom or home-based science projects. Carolyn Phelan

Bought this for our 8 year old neighbor boys birthday as he is SO into weather, probably has something to do with when he can wear shorts and play soccer! He is an above average reader and this was perfect for him. The book is very interesting and we learned a lot reading through it before gifting it! There are some fun and easy experiments included as well. If you have a future weather forecaster in your life, this is really worth picking up!!

As a fourth grade teacher, this is a great book that I use in the classroom to teach weather. The writing is easy to understand and the authors have activities children can use to make their own weather tools, observe weather, and record their findings. My principal purchased several copies for me to use in my classroom.

The Spirit of System: Lamarck and Evolutionary Biology, by Richard Burkhardt

Jean-Baptiste Lamarck was a biological Janus, at once a highly competent taxonomist in a traditional mold and a bold, almost visionary, philosopher of nature who aspired to contrive an all-embracing "physics of the earth" by sheer force of intellect. Lamarck is generally remembered only for his ideas about the inheritance of acquired characters, ideas he did not originate or take special credit for, ideas that were only one part of his broad theory of evolution. In this, the first modern book-length study of Lamarck, Richard Burkhardt examines the origin and development of Lamarck's theory of organic evolution, the major theory prior to Darwin.

Review
It is a great relief to have at last a good book on Lamarck in English, neither partisan through patriotism, nor distorted by dislike of Darwin. Burkhardt gives us an excellent introduction to Lamarck, his contemporaries and predecessors, and to the scientific bodies and institutions in revolutionary Paris...Exceptionally well written. (A. J. Cain Nature)

Lamarck Forever!
By McGilicuddy
The first modern book length study of Jean Baptiste Lamarck, published in 1977, this book addresses Lamarck's revolutionary idea of organic mutability, and thus his place as the true founder of the theory of evolution. Scholarly yet highly readable, this book is a great resource for those who want to know more about the impressive work of this great, shamefully treated genius.

An important book for anyone who wants to understand modern biology
By A. Ciapata
This book should be read by anyone interested in life sciences. It outlines major styles of modern biological thinking about evolution. It makes a convincing case of an extraordinary influence of Lamarck writings on our today's understanding of evolution. The book is strictly scholarly. It does not follow emotional and political battles of the time. It stands neither for Lamarck nor against his work. It just gives a competent account of historical facts along with detailed interpretation suitable for understanding modern biology. Of course the facts described in this book were well known to evolutionary scholars but were not accessible to general readers. Evolutionary theorists have long determined that all major variants of Darvin's evolutionary theory were in fact influenced by and compatible with Lamarck's work. Reportedly Darwin himself has been a devoted Lamarkian (for more details see for instance Gould's The Structure of Evolutionary Theory.) Yet the popular opinion supports an idea that work of Darwinian evolutionists is in a profound disagreement with the ideas advocated and sometimes invented by Lamarck.
The author, Richard Burkhardt, masterfully navigates between gossips, reliable historical facts, and meritorious biological data. One outcome is a powerful and convincing outline of a modern understanding of evolution of biological systems. The other outcome is a convincing demonstration of survival of Lamarck's views of evolution in today's biology.
Again, if you wish to understand biology, you should read this book.

Valuable insight into the development of evolutionary theory
By R. Sinclair
Lamarck tends to be painted as "the one who got it all wrong". This book is extremely useful in presenting not only his theory but also its context, social and historical. The text is detailed without becoming boring. No attempt is made to glorify Lamarck. Instead, the focus is firmly on giving the reader an accurate picture of how Lamarck's theoretical views on evolution came to be, and how they should be understood in relation to other views current at the time. I found the book a very refreshing read.

Phibes Resurrectus!
By William Patrick Maynard
Despite several attempts over the years to get a third Dr. Phibes film as well as a TV series off the ground, the two Vincent Price camp classics retained their cult status for being unique. A few years ago, the character’s co-creator, William Goldstein, acquired the literary rights to his property from MGM, the studio who currently controls the AIP catalog. At the time, Goldstein had to contend with unlicensed comic book appearances and an attempt by his former writing partner to revive the series with a new film. Having settled legal matters, Goldstein set about reviving the book series.

Forty odd years ago, Goldstein not only novelized the screenplay he co-authored for the original film, but he also novelized the sequel he helped develop. The movie tie-in novels are a very different beast from the films. Devoid of the eye-popping art deco sets and costumes, the campy scores and the scene-stealing performances by the likes of Vincent Price, Joseph Cotton, Robert Quarry, and Terry-Thomas; the books read like old-fashioned pulp thrillers with an exceptionally keen eye for historical detail.

So it was that I greeted the news of Goldstein’s return to the property with mixed feelings. Could he recapture the magic after so long? The unauthorized Phibes comics had tried but failed to capture the tone. The thoughts of anyone making a new Phibes movie seemed doomed to failure. What possible purpose could there be in a new book series so many decades on?

I needn’t have worried. Goldstein’s "Dr. Phibes: In the Beginning" picked up exactly where the character’s creator had left off forty years before. The book opened with a surprising modern day prologue showcasing Phibes’s mastery of dispatching his enemies with panache before delving back in time (as the second movie tie-in novel had also done) to give us the character’s backstory and fill in the missing pieces.

Goldstein has returned with a fourth title in the series, "Dr. Phibes: Vulnavia’s Secret." This title slots in perfectly between the first two titles in the series. It should be noted these are best enjoyed by those who have read the books and are not just familiar with the movies for subtle differences from script to screen or discarded ideas retained in the tie-in novelizations are kept intact in these new titles to offer a consistent alternate take for the literary Phibes. That said, Goldstein explains the re-casting of the role of Vulnavia from the first film to the second in a manner that many fanatical devotees had doubtless already determined was the logical conclusion to draw.

The book opens with Phibes’s dramatic rescue of Vulnavia from St. Daffodil’s asylum for the mentally ill before explaining how Phibes grew new skin cells for Vulnavia’s neck and face to replace her original features that were ruined by the acid shower at the conclusion of the original. As in the second novel (but not the second film), Scotland Yard detective Trout has fallen into alcoholism following his failure to bring Phibes to justice.

The third book introduced us to another female automaton to rival Vulnavia in Sophie, the vocalist with the Clockwork Wizards. We get much more of the character here including the tantalizing revelation that she and the rest of the Wizards had once been living, breathing people before becoming players in Phibes’s nightmarish world of his own creation. Phibes’s bloodthirsty pet eagle makes a welcome return and the book concludes by setting the stage for the second entry in the series, "Dr. Phibes Rises Again," with a stronger sense of a cohesive narrative for the entire series this time out than with the third book.

As always with this series, more questions are raised than are answered. Best of all, this definitely isn’t the end of the series. A fifth title, "Dr. Phibes: The Real Androbots" (co-written by Goldstein’s son, Damon) is in the offing and an independently-produced movie, "Forever Phibes," starring Malcolm McDowell as Dr. Phibes is gearing up for production. Vincent Price may be gone, but the Phibes Legacy lives on and with father preparing to hand over to son, the series may have life in it for quite some time to come. All four titles are available in trade paperback and ebook editions. The not so good Doctor is back and here to stay and that is reason enough for new fans and old to rejoice. Highly recommended!

History and lessons from US diplomatic relations, 1925-50
By Leonard J. Wilson
George F. Kennan's Memoirs: 1925-1950 provide a fascinating personal and diplomatic history of these years based on his experience at the center of many of the most important events during his quarter century of diplomatic service. This history is interspersed with numerous insights from his philosophy of how US foreign policy should be formulated that are quite applicable today. Finally, Kennan's Memoirs provide a rich background that is useful in digesting his numerous books on diplomatic history. As John LeCarre put it, if a writer claims to have written the definitive work on the hill tribes of northern Burma, it would be useful to know that he has at least been south of Minsk. Kennan has definitely been south of Minsk.

Kennan entered the Foreign Service in 1925 fresh out of Princeton and was posted to Berlin. Upon learning that the government paid a premium to officers with skills in exotic languages (pretty much any non-western European language), he enrolled in the Russian graduate program at the University of Berlin. After completing his Russian training, he was posted to Riga, Latvia, which served as the US listening post on Soviet affairs since we did not have diplomatic relations with Moscow until 1933. In 1933, Kennan was selected by the newly appointed ambassador to accompany him (as translator, aide, and country expert) on his first trip to Moscow, to open an embassy, find a suitable building, recruit local staff and so on. After a brief stay in Moscow, the ambassador returned to the US to recruit a diplomatic staff, leaving Kennan, about age 30, to fly solo as the only US diplomat in Russia.

Reassigned to Prague in 1938, Kennan arrived on the same day as the Munich conference that effectively ended Czechoslovakia's existence. He stayed in place as the lone American diplomat in Prague for a year after the fall of Czechoslovakia, reporting on the German occupation. After a year, the Germans insisted that he move to Berlin to maintain his diplomatic status. He remained assigned to the Berlin embassy until Germany declared war on the US in 1941 and was then interned along with the rest of the US diplomatic mission. Throughout the six months that it took the US and Germany to arrange an exchange of diplomatic internees, Kennan was the senior US internee, with responsibilities for the entire staff. Upon arriving in Portugal after the exchange of personnel, he was notified that he and the other internees would not be paid their salaries for the last six months since they had not been working! Not discouraged by this resounding "Welcome Home", Kennan proceeded to negotiate the use of the Portuguese Azores as a refueling stop for US aircraft enroute to Britain, not a small feat since Portugal was under direct pressure from Franco's Spain (at Hitler's direction) to consider the serious impact that providing military bases to the allies would have on Spanish (and German) perceptions of Portugal's neutrality. Somehow, Portugal managed to provide the bases without being dragged into the war.

Late in the war, Kennan returned to Moscow where as early as 1944 he observed that US and Soviet post-war goals were becoming increasingly incompatible. After Stalin's refusal to either assist the Polish uprising against their German occupiers in 1944 or to allow the US to provide assistance from bases in Soviet held territories had resulted in the slaughter of the Poles, Kennan increasingly advocated a distancing of US policy from support to the Soviet Union. In essence, his position was that we should recognize that we could do little of a practical nature to prevent the Red Army from occupying eastern and central Europe; on the other hand, we needed to make clear to the world that we neither supported nor condoned the occupation. Throughout this period, US policy seemed inflexibly wedded to the idea that the Soviet Union was one of our closest allies, despite the fact that Stalin had chosen to ally himself with Hitler rather than Britain and France when he concluded the 1939 Nazi-Soviet non-aggression pact which enabled Hitler to invade Poland without fear of fighting a two front war.

Kennan's trepidation about US-Soviet relations culminated in his "long telegram" from Moscow to the State Department which laid the foundations for the policy of containment. In Kennan's mind, containment was primarily a political and economic, rather than military, policy. His views led to the Marshall Plan to rebuild Western Europe, thereby reducing the appeal communism to Europeans. As Secretary of State, General Marshall invited Kennan to form and lead a Policy Planning Staff with a charter to provide analytic papers and policy proposals directly to the Secretary. When Dean Acheson replaced Marshall as Secretary, he revised Kennan's charter to one of coordinating policy papers among the multitude of Assistant Secretaries (who could seldom agree on where to have lunch). Realizing that his job would become that of a bureaucratic coordinator rather than an independent advisor to the Secretary, Kennan retired from government service to pursue an academic career where he believed he might have more influence on US foreign policy.

There is much in Kennan's Memoirs: 1925-1950 of continuing significance for American foreign policy. Some of his key observations include:

* Regrettably, both the American people and their governments tend to seek universals in foreign policy, trying to apply the same policies to all countries despite their differences. We seem to have a similar naivet in viewing all nations as either close friends of implacable foes, with no middle ground.

* US foreign policy is too often based on domestic political concerns, particularly in thee next election. Our national leaders seem to have had a universal urge to claim that their diplomatic policies have been great successes. In reality, diplomacy is a two party relationship where success depends on both parties actions and on the existence of common goals. Pretending otherwise results in short sighted and inconsistent policies. Throughout WWII and the early post war years, our national leaders sought to collect domestic political capital by emphasizing how well they were getting along with Stalin.

* The Anglo-American alliance won WWII but was not strong enough to win it without allying with one of our enemies (the USSR) and in the process we failed to make clear to ourselves and our people that this alliance was one of convenience and not one of shared values, principles, or goals. In reality, the only goal we shared was the defeat of Hitler.

* Following the end of WWII, Soviet aggressive action against European countries not already overrun by the advance of the Red Army proceeded largely by means of Soviet recruitment, supply and encouragement of indigenous communist stooges, rather than by direct Soviet military action. The antidote for this threat, in Kennan's mind, was the economic redevelopment of Europe via the Marshall Plan, of which Kennan was a major conceptual contributor, not by direct US military involvement. Since the communist threat came from indigenous elements, rather that Soviet forces, direct US military involvement would have placed us in the position of the outside force opposing local political and military forces. Direct military involvement would have acted to our detriment and to the benefit of the local and Russian communists.

* Kennan harkens back to George Washington's caution against entangling alliances. In his view, forming alliances is fraught with difficulties of inclusion and exclusion. There is a natural tendency toward inclusive alliances, which stems from the desire to make the alliance appear both broadly supported and formidable. However, not every country that might seek to join an alliance is a desirable candidate. Some may be geographically remote from the core of he alliance and, therefore, hard to protect. Some may not share the alliance's core values. Alliances are almost always directed against some actual, potential, or perceived threat, such as the many US led alliances against the Soviet Union. Expanding an alliance in a manner that encircles the adversary may provoke a more aggressive response than would have been forthcoming had the alliance been less encircling. On the other hand, one would not want to create the impression that a country was outside the alliance's area of interest by excluding it from alliance membership, unless, of course, it really was and we were prepared to see it overrun or its government overthrown.

Sadly, Kennan's Memoirs: 1925-1950 are out of print. They deserve wider attention in both academia and government.

A Fascinating Life, a Penetrating Look
By James R. Mccall
"Experience had convinced us that far more could be learned by careful, scholarly analysis of information legitimately available concerning any great nation than by the fanciest arrangements of clandestine intelligence."(p48)
"In the face of this knowledge, [of the inevitable Russion domination of Poland] I could only feel that there was something frivolous about our whole action in this Polish question. I reflected on the lightheartedness with which great powers offer advice to smaller ones in matters affecting the vital interests of the latter. I was sorry to find myself, for the moment, a part of this. And I wished that instead of mumbling words of official optimism we had had the judgment and the good taste to bow our heads in silence before the tragedy of a people who have been our allies, whom we have helped to save from our enemies, and whom we cannot save from our friends."(pp209/10)
"The strength of the Kremlin lies largely in the fact that it knows how to wait. But the strength of the Russian people lies in the fact that they know how to wait longer."(p511)
[On the German war crime trials] "I have already mentioned my aversion to our proceeding jointly with the Russians in matters of this nature. I should not like to be misunderstood on this subject. The crimes of the Nazi leaders were immeasurable. These men had placed themselves in a position where a further personal existence on this earth could have had no positive meaning for them or for anyone else. I personally considered that it would have been best if the Allied commanders had had standing instructions that if any of these men fell into the hands of Allied forces they should, once their identity had been established beyond doubt, be executed forthwith.
"But to hold these Nazi leader for public trial was another matter. This procedure could not expiate or undo the crimes they had committed. It could have been justified only as a means for conveying to the world public the repudiation, by the conscience of those peoples and governments conducting the trial, of mass crimes of every sort. To admit to such a procedure a Soviet judge as the representative of a regime which had on its conscience not only the vast cruelties of the Russian Revolution,of collectivization, and of the Russian purges of the 1930s, as well as the manifold brutalities and atrocities perpetrated against the Poles and the peoples of the Baltic countries during the wartime period, was to make a mockery of the only purpose the trials could conceivably serve, and to assume, by association, a share of the responsibility for these Stalinist crimes themselves."(pp260/1)
This is a great book. It shows the progress of a fine mind possessed of a practical scholarship and a moral voice in what were often excrutiatingly ambiguous circumstances.
Kennan was in Moscow in 1935 when Stalin began the purges; he was in Prague in 1938 when Germany invaded the Sudetenland; he was in Berlin when Germany declared war on the U.S.; he was the chief architect of the Marshall plan. Of course, he is associated with our Cold War policy of "containment" of the Soviet Union, an association that he regrets, since very little of it reflects his thinking. The book is a fascinating look at modern power politics from a bemused, but acute, inside observer.

Kennan has definitely been east of Minsk.

Intellectual Property and Private International Law (Oxford Private International Law Series), by James J. Fawcett, Paul Torremans

Intellectual property has traditionally been regulated on a territorial basis. However, the protection and commercial exploitation of intellectual property rights such as patents, trade marks, designs and copyright occurring across borders are now seldom confined to one jurisdiction. This book considers how the introduction of a foreign element inevitably raises potential problems of private international law, ranging from establishing which court has jurisdiction and which is the applicable law to securing the recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments.

The Internet has brought a significant increase in the scale of this phenomenon and valuable new chapters have been added to this edition to reflect this. Nationally protected trade marks are now used globally on websites and copyright material is distributed, communicated and copied in a world without borders. Patents have already been licensed on a transnational basis for several decades. All this raises questions of jurisdiction and applicable law. The well-respected and expert author team address such questions as; which court will have jurisdiction to deal with the issues arising from intellectual property rights and their exploitation in an international context? And which national law will the court with jurisdiction apply? Private international law questions increasingly arise and the two disciplines that previously operated in different spheres are increasingly obliged to co-operate.

Although such issues are becoming increasingly important, a dearth of literature exists on the subject. Fawcett and Torremans remedy that neglect and provide a systematic and comprehensive analysis of the topic that will be welcomed by practitioners and scholars alike.

This book is part of the Oxford Monographs in Private International Law series, the aim of which is to publish work of high quality and originality in a number of important areas of private international law. The series is intended for both scholarly and practitioner readers.

great wrap-up
By Amazon Customer
This book was great! It wrapped up all the happenings in Hard Luck, Alaska. It also rapped up all the characters live's. This series left no loose ends. I liked this book because all the characters from the previous two books were brought back in and had a part in the story. This book showed the bond between all the people of Hard Luck. This was an easy read. You will want to keep reading to find out how everyone's stroy ends. This book continued the bond between the three brother's Christian, Swayer, and Charles. The idea of bringing women to Hard Luck worked out for all involved. This book finally finds Duke Porter, Midnight Son's best pilot falling in love. Debbie Macomber's books are always well written, if you have enjoyed any of her other books, this series is a must read. Unlike some other series, this one left no loose ends. This series was one of the best I have read. By the end of this book I wanted to live in Hard Luck and find a handsome man. While reading this book you feel like you know everyone personally. Abbie and Sawyer's son, Scott, ends the book for us all by telling how everybody's lives have settled into place. You will enjoy the great advice of this young boy as he helps, and watches the people of Hard Luck fall in love. It was a great way to end the book. This is a must read!

A feel good novel
By Avid reader
The storyline in this series of books revolves around the efforts of one family trying to inject some new life into their small community in Hardluck, Alaska. The brothers run a small airline service (mail, people, deliveries), and employ a team of pilots. The community is heavily male oriented and in an attempt to get more females into the town, they run an ad for female staff offering them each a small area of land upon completion of a year long contract. This book comprises two novels (one pilot per story).
I had not read anything from this author prior to this work, but I found these two very enjoyable. The plot was lightweight, but the characters were sweet and innocent (compared to some of the darker, tortured heroes around these days). I went to bed with a nice glow after the requisite happy ending and look forward to receiving the others in the series soon.

Fun Read
By A Customer
I really liked both of the stories in this book. I liked that MacComber developed the father/daughter relationship between Bethany and Ben as much as the romance between her and Mitch. I really got to know and like all of these characters. The only criticisms I had was that I wish that there was dialogue written for Susan and Chrissie as they did their matchmaking and between Bethany, her mother, and Peter Ross.
I enjoyed the Matt/Karen dialogue as well. You can feel both of their pain because they divorced even though they still loved each other. You root for them throughout the whole book. I especially laughed at Scott's "advice." It was great comic relief for a serious subject.
